Tonight's episode preview:

Sayid is faced with a difficult decision, and Claire sends a warning to the temple inhabitants.

Previously on Lost...
In alternate 2004, Jack arrives late to pick up his son, David, from school. Jack's mother requests his help in finding his father's will, so Jack leaves David home alone. She believes that David is "terrified" of Jack, just as Jack was of Christian when he was David's age. The two find the will and Jack's mother is surprised to see that Claire is in it. Jack returns home to find David missing. He goes to David's mother's house and discovers David has plans to perform at a piano recital for an academy. Jack attends the recital and also meets Dogen, who is another parent at the event. Afterward, David admits to Jack that he was afraid of disappointing him. Jack reassures his son that he could never be a disappointment. In 2007, Jacob sends Hurley on an important mission to a lighthouse to help bring someone to the island, and gets Hurley to bring Jack along. The two run across Kate who refuses to accompany them or return to the Temple as she is trying to find Claire. They then come across the caves and Jack tells Hurley that he found the caves while he was chasing after his dead father. The two make it to the lighthouse and find notches on the dial with surnames and associated numbers. Hurley starts to turn the dial to 108 degrees as instructed, but Jack turns it to 23 - his surname. The reflection in the mirror shows his childhood home. He realizes Jacob has been watching them for years and becomes upset, shattering the mirrors. Outside, Jacob congratulates Hurley on getting Jack to the lighthouse. Hurley realizes that Jacob just wanted Jack to come to the lighthouse and see how important he is. Meanwhile, Claire rescues Jin and takes an Other prisoner. At her hideout, she treats Jin's wound and, believing the Others have her baby as her father and "her friend" told her, threatens to torture Aaron's location out of the Other. Jin tells her that Kate has been raising Aaron off the island, but Claire kills the Other. Jin then tells her he was lying. Claire tells him that she would have to kill Kate if he was telling the truth. Jin offers to take Claire to the Temple as he knows a way in. Claire's "friend", the man in black, shows up as they prepare to go.

Q: Sideways has given you a whole other avenue to explore these characters. How satisfying will that continue to be?

Damon Lindelof: For us, the Sideways were a hugely exciting thing for us to be doing but also it’s divisive as well. I think people are saying, “We’re beyond this. We don’t need these stories.” All we can say is they are absolutely, 100% necessary to tell the story of Lost and hopefully by the end of the season, it will be more obvious as to why.

Sayid episodes always own. Tonight should be no exception.
