NE traded their 7th overall and a fifth round pick to NO for the 10th overall and a 3rd round pick.

That's the thing, did you honestly expect Belichick to go with what everyone thought he would do? He's got Belichick player written all over him. He obviously had plenty of chances to take Keith Rivers, and felt Mayo would be the better pick. He's made plenty of questionable picks in the history of the draft, and they've always pretty much worked out.
