He couldn't have gone much further given how bad his ankle was at the time.
I know his ankle was bad, but it's not unlike wrestlers to suck it up and self-medicate if it means they get to keep climbing the ladder. Do you think Pillman was beyond that point?

More or less yeah. Pillman's greatest asset was his high flying stuff and that was gone. His ankle was fused together and he could barely walk. He once got out of a hospital bed, went to wrestle and came back that night. It wasn't pretty. The pain wasn't the problem for him. Physically it was nearly impossible to wrestle anymore with his ankle that messed up.

Amazingly talented, could do almost anything you asked of him, and he had a TON of potential. The guy just would not quit which made him fun to watch. Also he had a shockingly great match with Norman the Lunatic (Bastion Booger) at I think COTC 8.

I'm starting to feel more...entertained, hyped up, and excited this year than last year. Would you say the royal rumble main event is a big reason why?

Edge & Lita or Edge & Vicki?

Would you believe in any chances of seeing Hollywood heel Rock in the future? Something reminiscent of the character he portrayed years ago ( i.e. the Hollywood snob, who's too good for wrestling). Or has Rock reached the "fans will cheer him no matter what" stage?

Is Smackdown in desperate need of someone, who can fit the mold of "the guy" or has the end of the brand split killed any chances of this happening? I ask because Edge and Undertaker embodied that presence, but I don't see anyone (given time, maybe Del Rio) who qualifies right now.

Lita for the cleavage alone.

I can't imagine it given how popular he is at the moment. He's at that stage, yes.

The brand split has done that. Smackdown is a supplemental show to Raw and that's it.

I have just watched over the list of Bret Hart's PPV matches, and while he has a stellar record (especially regarding match quality), I have to ask:

Why was he fucked over that bad? While being (kind of) the top guy and in his prime his opponents in one on one matches include Skinner, Doink, Backlund (okay, but at Mania again?), Hakushi, Lafitte, Yankem and Patriot, sometimes multiple times and in dark matches even. Yeah, he had good matches with most of them, but couldn't he have matches which are good AND meaningful? That's like Cena feuding with Slater, Hawkins or Santino.

Well for one thing he was giving them rubs. Granted it didn't always work but it was an attempt. Also, Bret was the biggest star in the company, so instead of taking the main event spot they were letting someone else get main event experience.

Jean-Pierre Lafitte, Hakushi and the Patriot were supposed to be big deals? I don't think that was even intended.
Well, Diesel was champ, so feuding with and getting the title off him earlier (it was happening anyway after Diesel's classic against Mabel and various tag matches) wouldn't have hurt anybody I think. Or a feud with Ramon or Bigelow or even Sid or a team with Bulldog or anything basically.
But thinking about the options... you're on to something when you talk about a weak midcard actually.

-Would you like to see Lesnar vs Punk and I have a scenario of this match
-Punk retains at RR
-Punk retains at EC over Ryback and Rock via eliminating the Shield
-After the EC match all members of the Shield look at Punk and while Punk is celebrating Ambrose nods at Heyman
-On Raw Punk in a promo says hes the baddest man on the planet
-Lesnar comes out shoves Heyman and confronts Punk
-Following week VKM makes Vickie announce if Lesnar wants Punk bad enough Heyman can't be involved and makes a Lesnar vs Heyman match where if Lesnar wins he gets Punk at Mania
-Leading to WM Heyman and Shield are caught backstage making some sort of deal
-WM Heyman mentions he won't attend but tries to interfere to help Lesnar
-Shield attacks Punk and Lesnar wins the belt
-EXtreme Rules match Lesnar defeats Punk with heyman barred from ringside and Punk tries to comeback numerous times but can't reach the 10-count
-Punk for the next few months goes through Cesaro,Ziggler, and Ambrose as he states his crusade is to prove why he's the BITW with nobody's help
-Punk regains the belt at SSlam under a Last Man Standing Match against Lesnar and Heyman is cut open and he puts The Shield through seperate tables especially Reigns goes through a table while on a ladder

What moment in wrestling made you stop watching for a period of time?

I'll let you know when it happens.

From 94 - 96, who would you have preferred as a major face in the WWE: Crush or Diesel?

Diesel. Crush wasn't going to work as a top guy and I think Vince knew it.

Patriot might have been. That was more fodder for the Border War than anything else. As for the other two, Hakushi was supposed to be a big deal. Lafitte.....he might have been more of a way to prove that Bret could make anyone look decent.

And the lower card was somehow even worse.

I have almost no desire to see Punk vs. Lesnar.

Still working my way through Shawn Michaels' Heartbreak & Triumph book, but towards the end, he refers to the 2002 Elimination Chamber as a "disaster." Agree or disagree?

Thoughts on WWE's grand send-offs for retiring wrestlers?

Do you know of any database or thread that has a whole list of stories?

Not really. Just google it.

Agree, but likely not for the same reasons Shawn lists.

They're fine.

Shawn talks about the match "messing up" early on, and points out Kane coming in third (according to Shawn, he was supposed to come in as the 4th entrant) as an example of this, Triple H's injury, and they "didn't have a finish." But your main gripe with the match was Shawn coming back to win the WHC, right?

The thing is, with the talent you could have made up a good program, it just wasn't done.

With Bret, Shawn, Diesel, Bulldog, Ramon and Perfect being used as a wrestler you could've had a good main event scene.
Owen, Bam Bam, Tatanka, 1-2-3 Kid, Candido, Douglas, Goldust and HHH could make for a decent midcard.
For tag teams you could have the Gunns, Jarrett and Roadie, whatever DiBiase comes up with, the later KroniK and maybe a main event fallback like Michaels / Diesel or Hart / Bulldog if the division lacks credibility.
Throw in okay guys like Luger, Sid, Vega, Holly, Fatu, Hakushi, IRS, Zip or Kama if you're running thin.

The thing is, you don't need to feature immobile fatasses like Yoko or Mabel or old guys like Backlund or Lawler or "talents" like Doink II, the Godwinns or Blu Brothers or whoever. In the end, creative could've done much better, but didn't.

I don't want to think about 1995 anymore though, so I'm tuning in to Impact now.

Not so much that he won, but how he won. We're supposed to believe that Shawn is SO GREAT that he can come in basically as a rookie all over again and beat five top level guys after one match and a broken back? No. No way.

Watch NXT instead. It's better.

Eh, to be honest, WWE bores me to tears right now. When I think about it, there are currently about six characters in the WWE I care about, and that's already pretty generous.
Is it booked differently, do the wrestlers have more freedom? Then I might consider it, but I'm quite tired of the generic motions the main roster goes through.
