What do you think happened then between Shawn dropping the title and Mania 13 where Bret went from scheduled to win the WWE title to competing in a non title match?

What is the biggest underdog story in wrestling, excluding Austin/McMahon?

I've heard a bunch of answers to that before and the real reason isn't clear.

From what I understand, once Shawn wasn't going to drop the title, the plan was what we saw with one difference: Austin might have been getting the title at Final Four, only to lose it the next night to Sid, setting up Bret vs. Austin and Sid vs. Taker as happened. Once Shawn was out, it was changed to Bret vs. Austin with the plan being Austin beats Bret for the title the next year at Wrestlemania. One way or another, Austin was leaving Wrestlemania 14 as WWF Champion.

I actually don't think Bret would go much past 14 to be honest, his pro-Canada turn while good wasn't good enough for him to use for more than a year I think, and I just don't see the "Hitman" character lasting too long during the Austin/Attitude Era.

Is that a fair assessment, that he'd probably be gone prior to or around Wrestlemania 15? Or could he have plowed through for an additional three years?
