If I may jump in the discussion, I would say likely not, not the way they used to, because wrestling doesnt work the way it used too. All of your "new" talent has been wrestling for about 4 years, in Florida. Guys like Van Dam and Benoit had well over a decade of experience all over the world as top guys.

Yep. There are a bunch of ways you could go with his character but instead he's a rich guy with a lackey. There's nothing interesting about that because we've seen it before. Having a gimmick is a way to get your foot in the door. After that you need something more and your character has to evolve until you're something secure. Cena is a fine example of this. he had a gimmick in the rapper and then just became John Cena the man. Based on that, he'll always be over.

Just wanted to chime into the discussion about character development.
I feel like nowadays pushes aren't used to establish characters, but just to fill program time and showcase the flavor of the month storyline. Without an established character, a guy will fall definitely fall into a void after the storyline is over, no matter how dominant they may have been (Swagger? Sheffield? Jackson? Bryan? McIntyre? ...). For guys who wrestle on a show like Superstars where character development is almost nonexistent this is especially true. You can win match after match, but it won't get you anywhere before people know what you stand for.
Pushes feel like an on / off thing and not like a position showing how strong the wrestler is. Either you're pushed and look dominant almost every time (Sheamus, Punk, Henry, ...) or you're not and lose almost every time (Sheamus at the beginning of the year, Punk last year, Henry before the push, ...). A lot of feuds are totally one sided, but the guys dominating may be the ones being on the losing streak some weeks later.
How often do you hear promos by lesser established guys? Almost never, WWE doesn't do a lot to get them over unless they decide on a few who'll talk very often (Rhodes or Miz for example). While guys like Roberts or Regal rarely won feuds or major matches, most of the time they got good reactions - because people knew who they were and what they stood for. I guess part of this problem is that a lot of guys could establish themselves and were showcased in other leagues back then, while today there aren't a lot of other places besides the WWE.
I think a show mainly used to establish guys could help. Not to sell stories or matches, but to put lesser known talent into the spotlight. On the new Network, there is a lot of screen time to fill. Why not a show where one of the lesser known midcard guys is showcased? Like, a vignette introducing their background and character (6 mins), an interview where they talk about their goals and motives (5 mins), a promo (2 mins), a match showing the strengths and defining attributes of the wrester (15 mins) and a short summary and forecast (2 mins). Such a show could be great for guys like McIntyre, Cara, Kidd, DiBiase, Riley, Bryan, Ryan, Gabriel or Barreta - guys who are on screen but less known from a character perspective. Of course the ratings wouldn't be great, but character development is a department really lacking these days, at least in my eyes.

KB, how vital do you believe John Cena is to the WWE? Like where do you see the company right now had he never become big? Barring in mind the past is the same in which Lesnar left, Eddie and Benoit's deaths, etc just without Cena. Hope that makes sense

He's very vital. If nothing else for his merchandise sales alone. If you look at the TV ratings, when cena isn't on, the ratings go down. Love him or hate him, people want to see him and he's been as solid as they come.
