Is Ortons 'Viper' gimmick terrible or is it just me?

Austin 2.0
that's all Ive got to say about that.

I wouldn't say Austin 2.0 but I have noticed Randy has adopted a couple of moves that were used by some wrestlers back in the Attitude Era (Lou Thesz press, Angle Slam, Austin's pose w/o the two birds). Oh and Orton has no where near the mic skills of Steve Austin.

I will start off by saying some of the shit I've read here is absolutely ridiculous. Too nice of a haircut? Bad trunks? John Cena has nearly the same haircut, and wears freakin' jean shorts..give me a break.

And what is charisma?
1: a personal magic of leadership arousing special popular loyalty or enthusiasm for a public figure (as a political leader)
2: a special magnetic charm or appeal <the charisma of a popular actor>

I would say Orton is pretty damn charismatic. Granted, he doesn't jump around, scream and yell like Cena or Hogan, because he has a more silent kind of charisma. I think his in-ring psychology has a lot to do with that. He can make a crowd go absolutely insane (as a heel or face) by giving someone a particular look, or using a facial expression. It's called subtlety people, look it up.

If you like guys who are either going 200 MPH, or lying there getting their head kicked in, Orton is not for you. He is much more methodical than a guy like Cena, or Kofi Kingston (just examples). His style is much slower, but with purpose. If you think his style is slow because he either doesn't care about what he's doing, or because he can't do anything else, you have no clue what you're talking about.

It's all subjective. Every time I log into this forum, I see someone else complaining about how 'boring' Orton is, or how 'stale' he is. Funny I didn't see this much crying when he was a heel, doing exactly the same thing.

Why should he switch gimmicks? The fans began to cheer for him while he was doing the same things he does now. WWE didn't lead the charge in turning Orton face, the fans did.

Do I think he's overly entertaining right now? No, actually I do not. But I think that has everything to do with how he is being booked, and almost nothing to do with his talent. WWE has constantly thrown him into the backseat since his face turn, and have been either lazy or stupid in how they write for him/book him.

As I said earlier, it's all subjective. If you, in your own opinion, find him boring, good for you. But I really hate when people say he's boring, or he sucks, as though it's a fact. A man who does what Orton has done does not suck, plain and simple. That being said, I really hope he's given something interesting to do moving forward, or the Viper character is doomed.

No i just think either since everyone likes orton you do the whole cheer for the heel gay thing, which you should be crucified for if thats your issue with orton or faces for that matter or that you are are very critical to a popular superstar ( which being critical to something and making comments about it seems to be the trend today :banghead:) which is your own fault and loss.

When hasn't it been the trend to take a popular superstar and critique him? You accuse me of this as if I'm the one who created this thread haha. If you notice at the end of my post I said I'm past it anyway. I don't dislike Orton and I marked for him in the Triple Threat Cage Match for #1 contendership. My issue with him is simply that I'm not the fan of him I used to be, and I used this thread to express my reasons as to why, which is its purpose in the first place.
My issue is not with "faces" in general, but I choose to go for the underdog which is usually the heel when they're up against "SUPER-faces" like Cena and Orton. And that's what they've turned Orton into nowadays, a super-face with a rigid persona and a line-up of a final move set that never fails. Its true. Its true.

I really don't see why everyone wants the Legend Killer. In an industry, with Alberto Del Rio, The Miz, and Dashing Cody Rhodes do we really need The Legend Killer who's character is the same. Already Cody Rhodes is getting less attention due to his character being identical to other heels who do it better.

I agree, Orton should get some of his cockiness back. His promos are painfully boring ATM. but he can stay as a face for all i care. I'm totally content with CM Punk and The King that is Sheamus as the top heels on Raw. Just change the gimmick

:P Poo on you. Nothingness is MY gimmick.

Anyways, while you see stupid, the rest of us see badass. It really is a heel gimmick, but the crowd just wouldn't boo him anymore so they turned him face. It doesn't really work, but he's over, and that's all that matters. And it's hardly one of the worst gimmicks ever. I mean it's strange, but there are alot of guys at the back of THAT line.

I actually like the silent killer gimmick for Orton but I definitely hate certain things about it. First of all "hearing voices". Every time they say that, I want to hit someone in the throat. It sounds so stupid. I know it's in his theme song (which is atrocious btw) but whatever. Second, the weird head stuff he does when he's all excited, and the pounding for the RKO. I don't like it at all. I think the snake-like movements he's started doing are fine and I can live with the Viper/Apex Predator stuff, but I think he needs to be a little more cocky, almost with a swagger to his movements, little grin before the RKO, not slamming the mat so everyone knows, "Hey, Randy is doing the RKO....well, he will miss b/c he always does when he taunts so....more match left."

Honest To God, i think that his gimmick is okay right now. His gimmick isn't being a snake, tbh i think that sayings like "Slithering out of the ring" "stalking his prey" "coiling up like a viper" are just metaphors. What else could they do? replace it with this "Orton being sliding out of the ring" "Orton calculating his opponent" "Orton getting ready to hit the RKO". No, that would make commentary bland and generic. They use those metaphors to simply make commentary better. His true gimmick right now is being psycho. Remember January 26, 2009. On Raw they announced Orton has IED(i think it may have been Kayfabe) as an excuse for him punting VKM in the head. It was also used to build his feud with HHH at that years WM. It built him up as a heel more. But now look at Orton. He's just Mad at whoever he is feuding with. Like Miz,a few weeks ago in a tag match he was glaring at Miz daring him to get in the ring. His gimmick is being psycho. Nuff said. MO

Orton's Viper gimmick at this point sucks Ass! The only time Orton actually acts likes a "Viper" is when he's a heel. He gets more heat from fans as a heel when he does sadistic things. Take his vs. HHH & McMahon in '09 rivalry for an example. He had the Balls to Punt Vinny Mac in the skull. Then there was the same thing w/Shane O' Mac. Then he even RKO'ed Stephanie. A "Viper" would attack at all costs. However seeing him as a "fan-friendly" face doesn't back up his gimmick & what it's supposed to mean. Then there's the Voices thing could have worked as well in '09. He isn't as evil as he once was. He isn't as clever as he once was. He's more so viewed as a normal human being.

As much as I enjoy Orton's "Viper" gimmick I can't see why it continues without the slightest alteration to it. Being moved from heel to face was a good move for his career, but not while maintaining the same character or gimmick. It just doesn't make any sense. I preferred the "A-Pex Predator" gimmick he had going on for awhile as I believe the whole loose cannon character fits him quite well and much more naturally.
