In the market for a new laptop.

Getting Noticed By Management
I need some feedback on a good brand to look at when it comes to laptops. I have two hp pavilions sitting in front of me, have had one for 3 years and the other for 2. They're just about ready to give out on me, so I need a new laptop to take the place of both of these. I'm not looking to spend any more than $600. I'm not really tech savvy, I just use it for internet, music and schoolwork so I don't need much.

Go to Rent-A-Center. Truthfully, they may be over $600 in the end, but you pay in weekly or monthly increments, so you aren't blowing a lot at one time. They have good stuff. It's where I got my Toshiba, and it is great. I'm not sure where the closest one is to you, but it's worth looking into.

I'm a big fan of ultra-portable laptops, as I love having lightweight laptops that are easy to carry around. Keep in mind, I'm not saying netbooks, as I wouldn't buy one of those for $75.

Before buying from a brick and mortar store, look online at places like newegg.com because you can usually find things a little cheaper there. I recommend a minimum of 3 GB of RAM (and I personally never settle for anything less than 4 GB) and, depending upon how much music you have, a 320 GB or 500 GB hard drive will suit you just fine.

As an example, all of these laptops weigh under 5 pounds, and have at least 3 GB of RAM and 320 GB of hard drive space.

Some are lighter, some have better processors, some have more memory, but all are under $600 before tax. You can rate processors and video cards here:

Also, just out of curiosity, when you say your current laptops are about to give out, how do you mean?

That's probably the worst idea ever. No, seriously, an absolutely awful idea. To the point where giving out advice is probably something you should look to avoid in the future.

Can get a decent one at Best Buy for around 400 before any warranty or junk like that, plus pretty sure you can pay over 18 months.

I have an Asus 17inch laptop. They are pretty nice to be honest. It has Intel Pentium 7, Windows 7 (which is ok) and they are energy star rated. I got it for Christmas last year and have had no issues with it. My mom’s bf is a computer guy and I know he wouldn't by me shit. I like it more then HP to be honest with you. I truly have never been a fan of HP and all my computer friends don't like them either. For fewer than 600 bucks you should be able to get a nice Asus model. They are very nice. I am a huge Sony Vaio fan myself but, I am also jobless, broke and apparently a bit delusional lol. So check them out at Best Buy. They are worth the money in my eyes.

On the newer one, the fan's not working. On the old one, the screen has several dead pixels. I found out my newer one is still under warranty, but only for another couple of months. I'm probably gonna buy a new one anyway though.

Speaking from an anecdotal standpoint, I wouldn't buy a Dell. In my experience they're solid computers but their customer service is just a festering cesspit of idiocy. They couldn't get a single thing done for me when I was making a claim on my warranty. I'm sure you can get a comparable computer from a better company.

These two are HP, and I really liked both of them, but I guess it's time to upgrade.

I've always liked HP machines. All my computers are HP.

And if your laptop is under warranty, get it fixed, and then you can have two laptops. You can do so many cool things if you have a second laptop.
