I hate to be that guy, but... (NXT Women Discussion)

Nate DaMac

Fuck erbody but me
Is it at all possible that the NXT women are only having these bust ass matches because Sara Del Rey is their agent? I mean, from what I hear (and only from what I hear as I have literally never seen a second of her work) she is/was one of the best female wrestlers on the planet.

There are wrestlers on the main roster that could put on good matches.

Yes, I called them wrestlers. The number one priority, if they truly want to save and revive the division, would be to rid all things diva. Don't call it that, don't call the women that, erase the term. It's a death sentence.

Vince and his passion for "entertainment" will not allow that to happen.

I can tell you this, having Sara Del Rey working with the young women of NXT is not a bad thing. She's a valuable member of the "development" team.

It's not only on her for these matches tho. The women of NXT are doing what the women (and the men for that matter) on the main roster should be doing. They are feuding and they are WRESTLING. Of course it appears so much better than the main roster garbage. They are two entirely different things.

I love the idea of this thread though because I have a strong opinion on women's wrestling and how it could fit (and play a large role) in the WWE.

Yeah a lot of it has to do with Del Ray. I've seen various reviewers (myself including) giving her almost all of the credit for it. Granted there's more to it than that, with a big one being that the women are treated far more seriously down there. Yeah they wear revealing outfits and look good, but other than Enzo saying Carmella is hot or the old days of Regal calling Paige a raven haired beauty, their looks are almost never mentioned. That's a huge change and helps so much.

Nice to see the trainers get a bit of credit.
Obviously the wrestlers themselves have to have the skill somewhat inside them but it's the trainer who has to mold them and get that skill out of them.

I'm sure it helps a ton that she made her name off having good wrestling matches with other women so she probably has a better understanding of women's wrestling than a male wrestler.

It's not like they'll forget how to work a proper match when they move up.

Then again, there's all the shitty writers.

They won't forget but it's nice to have the foundation to start with.
If the women's trainer was like Lacey Von Erich for example that would make quite a difference in quality for when they do move up.

Does Kevin Dunn having little power over NXT have something to do with it as well? As I hear he's a huge advocate for the Divas. How NXT portrays the women probably wouldn't be his thing.

Agreed!!! They call it the "divas" title, and give every single woman the same terrible generic "diva" character, and then theres "Total bastard Divas", there should be about 2 (preferably just the 1) of that sort of character on the roster, the rest of them should find a new act, somehow find a degree of character/individuality or get lost and make way for some actual performers who can actually act, and probably wrestle a hell of a lot better too. Putting wrestling completely aside, The Bellas, Summer Rae, Alicia and yes even Paige are totally embarrassing in backstage segments. The only two who get any TV time on the main roster who I can stand to watch are Naomi and Natalya

It's certainly a factor, though not the biggest one.

To me, it's the stories that accompany the matches. It's simple (they want to be the best, the best wears the gold), and effective. There isn't a storyline of fighting over men, or over Total Divas story lines. Even the Bellas/Paige storyline is more about "power" and the "Bella Empire" whatever that means.

Give a simple storyline that isn't contrived, and people will buy it. It's that simple.

More reasons this theory doesn't hold up;

A. Wasn't Sara Del Ray also working as a road agent, for like a little while.

B. Isn't Finlay still backstage? Remember when he was going to be the savior of the diva's division? Remember when he got all that credit for making LayCool great workers?

Man, doesn't that feel so long ago? Anyway, if the agent is so important, why is Finlay being jack squat as a trainer now?

The agent's main focus is putting matches together and giving advice. They're generally working with talent that have already learned enough and applied enough of that knowledge to make the main roster. The agent is there to help sharpen those skills.

Finlay did a better job of helping wrestlers understand how to work matches than he has seem to have done with taking fresh talent and teaching them from scratch.

There's a big difference there.

That's not to say all the NXT women's wrestlers are coming in with no experience because that would be absurd. Sara Del Rey just seems to be doing a good job of crafting the ones who need it.

Also as I said in an earlier post.
A female wrestler who made a career off putting on good matches with other female wrestlers is going to have a better understanding of female wrestling than a male wrestler would.

She's the biggest part but there's more to it. Like:

No Bellas
No Total Divas
The worst worker is.....I guess Dana Brooke, who is better than a lot of the main roster Divas could ever hope to be.
They get more than five minutes a week

These are all things that could have been changed a long time ago. Like, before the Bellas were ever put in a match.

It's not like they'll forget how to work a proper match when they move up.

It's not that they forget. It's that they can't do the things they know how to do, with people that don't know how to work that way, or sell the offense properly. It's not worth the risk of hurting someone, to work a match where you need to carry everything. So, they conform, and do whatever it is that the main roster women can already do, which hasn't been much in ages.

And, to whoever said that they need to drop the term "Diva" is SPOT ON. Calling the women anything but wrestlers automatically diminishes the product.

My guess it comes down to 3 things:

1) Good training
2) Given time to get their shit over.
3) Treated like athletes instead of eye candy.

Sara Del Ray being their trainer helps huge but I think the way they're presented is just as important. If you treat them like wrestlers and not models, the perception is they're wrestlers, not models.

Dean Malenko was an agent on the main roster when the Great Khali was there. It doesn't matter how good the agents are, you need the talent in the ring to pull it off. Don't sell them short.
