I Don't Understand Mark Madden

"It was better when I was younger." That's the general idea behind everything he says. Just like everyone who bitches about kid's cartoons these days or music, etc. Of course you don't like it, you're not the target audience anymore. The only reason you like the old stuff is because it's a staple of your childhood. Try to show a 10 year old the Steamboat/Savage match or any of Flair and Sting's matches. They'll fall asleep on you.

One can still enjoy wrestling and realize it's monstrously stupid, have complete awareness of Vince McMahon's exploitation, etc. and so forth.

Madden's the man. Sexy beast too.

To be fair, those are still absolutely brilliant matches. If youngsters had any emotional investment in the characters involved and the personal issues, they'd eat them up like candy. And that sort of investment is missing in a lot of wrestling today.

Thank goodness for TNA, Cena, Punk, and Bryan.

What you have to understand about Mark Madden *breath* is that he's paid to say those things. *breath* All play, AND NO WORK. *breath* He secretly loves the business *breath* but you know what they say, MISERY LOVES COMPANY. *breath* He's a fat fuck, *breath* who has a pretty easy job. *breath* I can't imagine him, BEING GOOD, *breath* in any other occupation.

His breathing bothers me more than his opinions do. I don't understand why they don't edit his heavy breathing out. It would make listening to his rants much more bearable, and it's not like it takes much time to do.

You know that kid that was smart, athletic and wasn’t picked on everyday through his entire life even as an adult. You know with the inspirational parents "you can be whatever and you will succeed". Well he is not that kid/guy.

Does reading hard truths from guys like Madden always activate the defence mechanism that turns you into a judgemental little shit?

It's because Mark Madden actually loves wrestling. But unlike the fanboys and jocksniffers he realizes it can and by all means should be better than it is right now. There's a difference between being a fan and being a honk for a wrestling fed.

Also to answer the question, money.

That was awesome. I do enjoy Madden's columns on here. Never actually heard one of his shows. My only gripe with him though is that he continually calls IWC and fans marks, yet not himself. As much as he was a fan of the Horsemen and the facts that he covers wrestling in the media makes him one of the biggest marks out there. Just saying.

We are marks, we just like to think we're smart. He's actually worked in the business, which is why he isn't. He knows more about how shit works than we do.

My point is that being that he was and still is a fan, coupled with the fact that he continues to watch even if he doesn't like the products, makes him a mark. He's been in the business before and continues to write columns and have shows dedicated to wrestling. Makes him a bigger mark than any of us.

I actually, for the most part, enjoy Mark Madden. We share the same opinion as it relates to Ric Flair and his place in wrestling (that is, to say, the greatest of all time). I thought his color commentary on the dying days of Nitro was not only passable, but above average. He's obviously intelligent and knows how to convey his point in a clear, succinct manner. I wouldn't expect less knowing his history behind a microphone and his passion for journalism.

Still, I can where Harthan is coming from. Madden has taken to making disparaging comments concerning most talent (with the exception of CM Punk and Paul Heyman) and the product. And while I agree that many facets of the business aren't what they were back in the 80's and early 90's, this is a business that necessitates augmentation; it's required to evolve. Vince McMahon, while certainly exploitative of talent at times, it's a forward-thinking businessman. His job is to see around the curve and he does it remarkably well. Don't like the constant social media references? Well, for someone who has 13,948 tweets under his belt (I know, I follow him), sounds to me like ol' Mark can be touch hypocritical. From a business perspective, WWE is one of the most adept I've seen at maximizing exposure and aggregating revenue streams. Madden, much like the book "ChokeHold" by Jim Wilson, continues to focus on only the negative aspects of wrestling. I would think that Madden, having been a fan for as long as he has, would appreciate the cyclical nature of this business. It's during this time that WWE is trying to secure it's fanbase for the next 20 years, just as we did in the 80's, thus assuring itself an audience in the future.

While everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, Madden's vitriolic commentary gets old after a while. Still, I guess he's done what he set out to do, and that's get us talking and keep us reading.

Mark Madden is a sad bitter man. I do not believe he loves this business(Anymore), it seems the only time he loved this business is when he was marking for Flair or when WCW was paying him. We all know its 'fake', but I don't want to read an editorial where you bash the fucking product to death, slob Lesnar's knob dry, and call it 'FAKE WRESTLING' fifty times. Seriously dude go cover your fucking Steelers, because all your doing is trying to sell to the fans that they shouldn't be fans.

Why does he keep writing about something he hates?

It just seems like an awfully miserable way to live life, employed to constantly complain. I mean, read his piece on Wrestler of the Year (http://www.wrestlezone.com/editorials/260861-wrestler-of-the-year-2012) - this isn't criticism, this is just pure spite.

I don't get it, man.

You just complained about not only Mark Madden, but a large quantity of people who comprise the IWC. How many people come on here to do nothing but bitch? Ask them.

Dude has commented the Super Bowl for god knows how long. If you got some issues with that. Relax. It's one afternoon every year. You can get over that.

You can love wrestling and still bash the product unless you want to be a sheep.
