How would you rate the Godfather in the attitude era?

CM Steel

A REAL American
The Godfather Charles Wright was just at fan access last weekend in New Orleans, LA for Wrestlemania weekend. He has had many gimmicks while wrestling in the WWF/E. From his time in the tag team known as Power & Glory to his solo career as PaPa Shango. Following as Kama the extreme fighting machine right before joing the Nation of Domination. But when the infamous attitude era came around in the WWF Kama changed his gimmick once again to the Godfather: big pimp'in.

The WWF had their very own wrestling pimp! A wrestler coming to the ring with straight-up hoe's from local stripper clubs nationwide! The Godfather was gold on the mic while doing promo's in the ring on RAW saying things like "Roll up light up a fatty for this pimp daddy!". And the people at the USA network didn't get what he was saying to the live crowd so he got away with it alot.

When the top storyline feuds were going on like Stone Cold vs Mr. McMahon and DX vs the Corporation. The Godfather brought in some comic relief. He was dead smack in the middle of the program every monday night on RAW. With Val Venis as his wingman, the Godfather managed to win the WWF IC title from Goldust on RAW for his success in the long run. But he lost the IC to Jeff Jarrett two months later. The Godfather was one of those character you'll never forget. But, how would you rate the Godfather in the attitude era?

I liked Godfather's run during the Attitude Era..He did his job well, entertained the crowd, brought lots of fineass hoes(local strippers) to the ring and when he tagged up with Val Venis, they made a damn good team..Even though Godfather only held the IC Title for a couple months, that's more than I expected out of him for a singles title run even though I've always liked him no matter what gimmick he had(Shango, Goodfather, etc). I liked his finisher being the Death Valley Driver because it fit him well and I've always liked the Death Valley Driver. Also, as shitty as the Brawl For All was overall as a tournament, I liked Godfather's fight against Bart Gunn even though he lost.

I'm surprised that Godfather didn't win the tag titles with Val Venis. Goodfather and Bull Buchanan(who also was put with Cena and Bossman at different points during his WWE run) ended up winning the tag titles instead of Venis and the Godfather, which I thought was the better team.

One thing about Godfather that you got wrong is that he was never in the tag team Power
And Glory. Hercuies Hernandez and Paul Roma were in the tag team Power And Glory with Slick The Doctor Of Style as their manager during the summer of 1990 til the summer of 1991

He was entertaining as da godfather but i always liked kama da supreme fighting machine better. I still remember his mini feud w/taker when he melted his urn down 2 a gold chain and never seemed 2 fear taker

I agree, as the Godfather he was entertaining but not a great wrestler, as Kama and to a lesser extend Papa Shango he was a good "wrestler"

but as the Godfather he was an intrical part to the entertainment factor of the Attitude era.

The Godfather was a great novelty character, maybe the best that WWE has ever seen and he was perfect in the mid-card. However when he was Kama Mustafa, I saw a lot of potential for him as a real bad ass heel and he may have gotten his push earlier had he not gotten hurt and than knocked out by Bart Gunn (which killed Kama imo). However Godfather has been able to stay relevant through all these years and he still gets a nice pop whenever he shows his face around the WWE. He was perfect at his job.

It was a fun gimmick that had a longer shelf life than I would have thought. The point is, the fans liked it. Yes, on this forum, there were probably some folks who were outraged by an act that didn't feature "traditional" wrestling, but there has always been a place for comedy acts in sports entertainment, as long as segments were kept short.

After all, how else would Santino have a job in WWE?.....and when they wanted to give someone like Emma a chance to nerd out on the main roster, they paired her with the resident clown instead of giving her an act on her own. Fine idea. Too much comedy isn't a good thing.

What I wondered about most during Godfathers' era was how they recruited the hos'.....who were probably local girls from a modeling agency in the city WWE was playing. I would have liked to see the work order presented to the agency:

"Young women needed to portray prostitutes at wrestling show....must parade their bony butts down a slanted ramp and dance with other hos' while a stereotypical pimp struts his stuff at ring center."

That they got the girls locally and didn't fly a troupe of hos' from city to city upheld Godfathers' premise that he'd been pimpin' hos'......nationwide.

power and glory was hercules hernandez and paul roma
godfather was a standout in the attitude ear because of his charisma, the godfather was able to break away from the nation due to his charisma, and for the record the girls were dancers at the local clubs

IM not quite sure if it was WM16 or not,but i remember ICE T coming out with the Godfather rapping.. Godfather while not the greatest in the ring, had a very entertaining gimmick.. Perfect for the attitude era. I often wondered as well, where the recruited the HO's.. Doesn't matter Godfather was absolutely genius for its time..

Perfect for the attitude era. He had charisma written all over him with his personality and colored ring gear. He'd have women come to the ring with him. He was a decent wrestler. I always thought he was very entertaining. The HO Train?!?!? Man, these days you couldn't get away with that. Fun fact - Victoria and Lita were both ho's at one point. Kind of like how the NXT girls were part of HHH's entrance at WM

Godfather was awesome. He was the perfect character for that era, and Charles Wright played it to perfection. He also made the most of a rather poor Papa Shango gimmick, and of course was awesome as Kama. And don't forget his run as heel Godfather in the RTC, an underrated midcard stable.

Given the low standards for the Hall Of Fame, with guys like Koko B. Ware getting inducted, I think Godfather could be inducted one day.

From his time in the tag team known as Power & Glory

Wait, what? Godfather wasn't a part of that team.

Anyway, I liked the Godfather for a little while but I thought he got old quickly. Well maybe not quickly but I got tired of the Godfather gimmick well before it ended. I find it funny that so many people used to criticize Alberto Del Rio for being repetitive in his promos yet guys from the attitude era are beloved for it. "It's time once again for everybody to come aboard the Hooooo Train." "Pimpin aint easy." Same thing every single week. Again, I didn't mind it for a while and the fans enjoyed it but The Godfather wore out his welcome with me. I was glad when he dropped the character and joined RTC. I'll take PG over pimps and porn stars.
