How I Met Your Mother

I searched for an official thread on this show, and unless I just missed it, then one simply doesn't exist. So here it is finally, a couple of weeks into the 6th Season of this wonderful, wonderful sitcom, the official How I Met Your Mother thread.

I actually just got into the show myself about a month or so ago. I was a huge fan of Jason Segal and Neil Patrick Harris before watching it, so I always planned to check it out someday. Finally I decided to just go buy Season 1 on DVD, and I instantly fell in love with the show and all the characters. I now own all five seasons on DVD, and am very much looking forward to this 6th Season.

But I guess we should start this thread off by discussing the first two episodes of this season? Personally, I thought they were fantastic, how about you guys?

In the first episode of season 6, we're finally getting back to Ted finding YM (which the show sort of steered away from in Season 5) by giving us the whole future wedding ordeal. Who's wedding is it Ted is attending? It seems like throughout the series there will be 'flashforwards' to that wedding and piece by piece will be revealed as the season goes by. Do any of you have any theories on whose wedding Ted is apparently the best man for?

Episode 2 of this season I thoroughly enjoyed, as it mostly revolved around Barney, and any episode revolving around that character is going to be gold. I absolutely cracked up at him telling his 'black father' to watch him run, and "You're not looking, daddy!" So adorably hilarious, just as Barney always is. You have to love the guy. I also dug the side plot with Robin overselling Ted.

Anyways, share all thoughts on HIMYM here, whether it contains to this season or past episodes... doesn't matter. Just rejoice in the awesomeness that is How I Met Your Mother.

How I Met Your Mother has to be one of my favorite television shows of all time. It pretty much has some for everybody, as well as many different things that could make everybody want to watch it. We've got entertainment, we've got hot women, and hell we even got some good life-lessons through Josh Radnor (Ted Mosby if you wonder).

Pretty much, if you're watching this show, you're guaranteed some kind of good time. It has pretty much always delivered if you ask me. I've been watching somewhat periodically through a few years. Denmark's television setup pretty much sucks at running this series from episode 1 to the whole end. Especially considering we have to sit around and wait for the Americans to finish their latest season, before we get it a few months later.

But, this show has basically become the replacement for friends. Not in the way that it's all great and mighty as many might think. But a little bit in the way that it's a bunch of friends, with their various stuff going on and their adventures, as well as Ted / Robin's Rachel / Ross kind of relationship. As well as the fact that How I Met Your Mother to me can re-air an episode like 3-4 times in a row, and I'll still watch it and enjoy it, laugh at the same old shit I laughed at before.

That's pretty much how great this show is.

I actually just got into How I Met Your Mother as well. Mainly just random reruns so I have yet to see any of season 6 though. This show is hilarious and I'm setting my DVR to record every episode that comes on. I just have one question though... They're all adults already so who exactly grows up to be Bob Saget?

A bunch of my friends are into this show. Seen all the episodes so far.
Jason Segel is just stand out for me. Comic timing of a genius, NPH is well, talented as heck. Every character is unique and at the same time co-dependant on the other.

Ferbian got it right, it is the new friends.

HIMYM is by FAR my favorite show on television. Started watching mid season 1-early season 2. Not quite sure. Reason I turned in was because it was before Raw and would pass that time and I ended up falling for the show. I watched every episode from the past seasons just because I couldn't wait for the season 6 premiere.

Regarding the wedding at the beginning of the season, I'm not really sure. My brother tried to convince me on the fact that it could be Barney's wedding, as we didn't see him with Ted and Marshall during the premiere in the flashback. I for one can't see Barney getting married and who would Barney marry that knows the future mother? I for one believe the wedding is gonna be that of the mother's roomate (Cindy). We saw her and Ted reconnect in the opener and dating Ted made her move on with her life and find her partner. Maybe her and Ted become better friends throughout the season to the point where Ted is the best man at her wedding. No clue really, but the season has been awesome and I can't wait for tonight's episode.

Well, most theories floating around is that it is Barney's wedding and he's marrying Jennifer Morrison's character, who will premiere later this season and will be basically a girl version of Ted. Also, of course you can't count out it being Barney and Robin getting married, who can always get back together. Or it could be Ted's dad who's getting married.

Moreover, you can't count out the possibility of it being Ted's wedding. After all, when Lily hollered out, "The Best Man is needed!" she could have been talking about Marshall, not Ted.

So, there are a bunch of different ways this can go. It's going to be fun to see it get sorted as the season continues.

This is one I haven't heard, but it's an interesting thought. The only thing that hurts the theory is that Rachel Blison (the girl who plays Cindy) is only listed as being on one episode this season. But you still never know.

Very good points. It is a long season and they very well could develop Barney into a guy that would fall for marriage for the right person. Hopefully it doesn't ruin his awesomeness. Though I don't think that is possible for NPH to be unawesome. Ted's dad is a great theory. We've seen his mom get married now, so it wouldn't surprise me if it was his father.

Didn't Marshall state that Ted was giving a best man's speech to begin the episode? I could have sworn that was the case. And at the end of the episode didn't Older Ted state that he saw the mother at the wedding? I may be mistaken as my memory is a bit hazy right now.

Hmm. All I knew was she signed on for season 6. Didn't hear how many episodes. Shame. But thinking about it Marshall was in a tux at the wedding, so I doubt he'd wear a tux to here wedding and I'm not sure he'd be in the wedding party for Cindy. So that theory may very well be out the window. Many options, looking forward to all the unfolding.

Onto tonight's episode. I enjoyed it, as I just finished watching it. A episode about chasing a dream and reaching closure. Ted and Barney again had that great connection and Marshall and Lily kept teasing Ted and Barney about being a good couple (which makes the Morrison theory a tease possibly). Barney putting the moves on Ted was awesome and solid stuff from Marshall trying to wingman it up. It may very well be my favorite episode of the season thus far, but it is tough to tell seeing we are a few episodes in.

He didn't say "Best Man Speech," he simply said speech. So, yeah... while it's unlikely, it's hard not to notice that the writers are toying with us a bit with their choice of words in that scene, lol.

And at the end of the episode didn't Older Ted state that he saw the mother at the wedding? I may be mistaken as my memory is a bit hazy right now.

Yeah, but see... that's the thing. Maybe it's his wedding, and then he meets YM at it, who's there with a friend of a friend? Maybe Ted has been married before, and that's what Season 7 will revolve around? You never know...

I completely agree. I'm very interested in seeing where this now leads to with Ted working with Barney and Marshall again. That should bring a lot of good stuff.

Also, bringing back Marshall's hat in this episode was fucking classic as well. Loved it.

Fun little episode this past week. Nothing special, but it is one of those things that makes HIMYM enjoyable. It breaks aways from Ted's search for the mother and focuses on the characters development and why they do the things they do. The thing that I picked up most from this episode is that Barney still cares for Robin. Whether it is a love care or just the care of a good friend, I guess the future will determine that for us. I don't think a Barney and Robin hook up is gonna happen, as in terms of a relationship, but I could see a one night stand type of thing. Continues to be a strong season however and hopefully it doesn't hit a stall and stays strong throughout the year.

Yeah, it was a nice stand-alone episode. It didn't progress the main storyline in the least bit, but still a good little episode for all the supporting characters (mainly Robin). We saw Robin once again at a low point, only to find a tad bit of happiness at the end of the episode. Marshall and Lily struggling to have a baby, but who didn't see that one coming? I think it's obvious they'll wait until the finale to announce that Lily is pregnant and then next season we'll witness the whole pregnancy. And Barney, once again, showing deep down how good of a guy he truly is to let Robin win. It's always nice when they show Barney's true, noble colors.

So, yeah.. good episode overall, but I'm hoping they get back to the main storyline arc next week. I'm really curious about that wedding, lol. I'm also ready to meet Jennifer Morrison's character.

We get to meet Jennifer Morrison's character this week, so I'm pretty amped up about that. So I imagine we are gonna get back to the hunt or some sort of hints and such this week. Either way really looking forward to it. Judging by the preview it looks to be solid and definitely will develop into something that is gonna take a good chunk of this season.

I remember watching the pilot of this show when it first aired. I always want to find time to kill before Raw and this show had Doogie Howser in it. That was my thoughts as I watched the first 'sode. And I was hooked. The whole leading to how he met his future wife is brilliant writing. And Barney Stinson may be the best character on television since Cosmo Kramer from Seinfeld.

The writing on the show is flat out brilliant. Their catchphrases and names for certain situations are priceless. I use about two or three of them a day. True story. See what I did there?

Anyway, there isn't an unlikeable character on the show. Robin was close a few times, but I still dig her. Ted's character is a great mix of Drew Carey, Jerry Seinfeld, and Al Bundy. The bad luck like Drew and Al had, and the wit like Seinfeld had. And Lilly just became flat out smoking ass hot the past two seasons. Seriously, where did those boobs come from?!

I'll hate when this show ends... because it's one of the few sitcoms the past 10 years that got it right.

HIMYM is an awesome show. One of my favorites going on thsese days however I'm not that much into it as I was when I started with it.Its not a HaHa funny show to me. It has too much of a Rom-com influence and it can get a bit monotonous and dull at times. Good thing Barney is there to save the day.

This thread needs some serious bumpage. The first episode of the new year was great. Easily the best episode of the season in my mind and one of the best episodes in a long long time. The emotion throughout the episode was great and the little number countdown was fantastic.

The whole time I expected the countdown to be for the days until Lily announces that she is pregnant. I did not see that the countdown would signify how much time Marshall's father had left to live. It is going to be great to see how the writers continue this story of Marshall coping with his father's death.

^^^Seeing Jason Segel acting that scene was heartbreaking and he only said one line. That's how good of an actor he is.

I do agree with Saff that the show can get a bit dull at times. There are definitely episodes where I'm like, "Did I laugh out loud once?". More often than not I spend the entire episode laughing my ass off but there are dry moments. I do feel that the show has picked back up since the 6th season started. I just wish they'd give clues more often regarding "the mother". It seems like it's only a clue or two a season.

I got to bump this up, how the hell does this thread keep falling? Anyway, I've been into this show for a few months now. I didn't have cable and one of the local channels here picked it up so I gave it a shot. Hooked instantly. I finally caught up on every single episode over the weekend and watched the new one on Monday. Now I'm up to speed and the suspense is killing me. Anywho here's some of my thoughts.

The Funeral episode with Marshall's dad dying was a tear jerker. A very well written episode.

I keep seeing jmt and Theo talking about this wedding. Just a thought, but last season didn't Punchy ask Ted to be his Best Man at his wedding? I don't remember them ever addressing him going back home for it. Then again, Ted said he spent time with his dad not too long ago during the aforementioned funeral episode.

That's all I got right now, but stay on this shit guys!

There is only 4 or 5 shows that I will never miss every week. The greatest thing that can happen to a show is becoming part of my habit and How I Met Your Mother has accomplished that.

I have been watching it from the first episode and I have never looked back. Barney is simply the funniest character in television history and it most of the reason that I continue to watch the show. From the very first episode, I have been hooked on his character and the show in general. I think Ted is a bit of an unappealing character but he is balanced out by the other characters that really make this show worth watching.

Recently. The show has been fantastic. As Nate noted, the funeral episode was fantastic. It was definitely one of the most touching episodes of How I Met Your Mother and it was a welcomed change from what they usually do. It was fresh but very emotional. I couldn't help but have a frog in my throat as I watched it and heard Marshal's dad's last words to him. That really made me smile.

That being said, I think the latest episode was one of my favourites ever. I have a feeling that Zoe is going to be a huge character in the development of Ted. As I watched the show and Ted was shouting at her for her flaws, I was actually so annoyed that he was going to ruin it. Luckily, Marshal saved the day and now Zoe and Ted are together. Whether it lasts or not, I am hopeful for. I love Zoe and the relationship with Ted ought to be quite humorous at times. You get the feeling though, that the story arc is now moving towards something again. For too long, the show has just been content to plough along doing nothing to give is a resolution for the main story arc and that is how he met his wife. I like that is not happening again.

I was a little weary of Zoe at first, but I have begun to really enjoy her character. After she found out that Ted loved her and Ted continued to ramble off the insults, you could see her smile and know that Ted was full of shit. I can't wait to see how they develop the relationship between Zoe and Ted. I know the show isn't gonna last forever and they can't keep it going forever, so I believe the show will only be around for a season or two following this one. I wait in anticipation for how this season ends, as the writers always do a fantastic job leading us up into a new season.

As for Nate, excellent point in Punchy's wedding. I think that could be a definite possibility though I'm not sure as to why Marshall, Lily, Robin, and Barney are there as they aren't really fond of Punchy and I'm not sure they are really friends with him at all. Who knows though, but it is definitely something to consider.

I love Jennifer Morrison and the Zoe character is just perfect for Ted at this point in the series.

Don't forget that in the Season 6 premiere, Ted tells his kids that the first time he met their mother was at "the wedding." Well, as we would later find out "the wedding" is Punchy's wedding.

So, my guess is that Ted goes to the wedding with Zoe as his date but ends up meeting "the mother" there.

It is funny that you should say that, Theo.

I was reading through a couple of articles on the Net a couple of weeks ago and I recall seeing something from the writers of the show that stated that Zoe was going to be a huge character in the progression of both the story arc and the life of Ted. To me, that is the clearest indication that we are getting closer to the end of the show and I really don't know how to feel about that.

On the one hand, I have been infuriated with the story progressing no further with every passing season. I honestly thought that the character Sarah Chalke played would have been his wife but to no avail. I get frustrated that we are literally no closer to finding out who his wife is and what happens with that. However, with the show being called what it is, you can't really see it continuing past the point that he meets his future wife. That being said, I could see it going a little further when he does meet her. It would still be called How I Met Your Mother but it could perhaps focus on life after they meet each other and the troubles that they have to work through in their relationship.

All I am saying is that meeting the eventual mother of his kids might not be the end of the show and that could be quite interesting. Then again, I am just saying that because it is one of my favourite shows on the box.

I thought tonight's episode was by far the best of this season. I fucking LOVED it.

First, Ted and Zoey's relationship is off to a good start. I think out of all the girls we've seen Ted with up to this point, that he very well just might have the best chemistry with Zoey. Jennifer Morrison being so adorable might have a lot to do with that, but regardless... this relationship could end up being very entertaining.

Marshall turning into his teenage self caused for some HILARIOUS moments. The way he was just relying on his mom for everything gave me a couple of good lol moments. And of course, my favorite thing about this show is how they mix in the comedy with genuine sweetness and dramatic spots, and that's what we saw with Marshall tonight regarding his father. I thought when he opened up to Ted about missing his dad was one of the most heartfelt moments we've seen from the show in quite some time.

And it looks like Barney might finally have someone to settle down with since his relationship with Robin ended. I thought the little "You like Nora" spot he had with Robin was super cute; it had me giggling like a little fucking girl, lol. And of course her showing up to play laser tag with him at the end was perfect, too. It'll be nice to see Barney with a girlfriend if this progresses, especially since Nora at this point seems very charming and likable.

So, yeah... great episode tonight, like I said. Hopefully the rest of the season follows the route the show took tonight. If so, we'll be in for some great, great stuff for the rest of season 6.

I really don't see the chemistry between Zoey and Ted. It has been a great few episode of HIMYM recently but the Zoey character just doesn't appeal to me. I really hate her appearance on the show. The fact that she is another cute blonde with relationship issues and insecurities makes her an inferior version of Stella. She seem to be forced upon us by the writers because Ted needed a romantic interest for the current season. I feel it was inappropriate for Ted to have feelings for a married woman and acting on it. Sure she is going through a divorce but technically he was part of a breakdown of a marriage and it doesn't fit the Ted's character of wanting a perfect marriage.

Looking forward to seeing Barney and Nora being a couple and hope that Nora can be the catalyst for Barney and Robin ending up together again. Seems like Barney's Dad will appear soon so that could be a hoot. And Marshall and Lilly getting ready for parenthood in the near future should be a treat as well.

Well since this is my first post on this thread I will tell you how I got into the show. I didn't get into it until 2009. I thought this show was nothing but a rip off of friends. I didn't like my family watching and I definately didn't like them saying that it was as good as friends. However, once I bought the first season and started watching it I instantly fell in love with it. Now as far as previous season's go if this thread allows me to I will probably come in and talk about some of the stuff I liked about the previous season's.

The reason I came on this time was to give my two cents about the Zoey and Ted relationship going on right now. I don't think Zoey is going to be the mother at all. I think this is definately just another relationship to have Ted be in. So far I don't think with Zoey they addressed any of the hints Ted has addressed in the previous seasons to who the mother is. Their are two (technically three but two that I'm concentrating on right now). The two hints that pop into mind are the Yellow Umbrella and the fact Ted said he quit smoking two weeks after he met his wife and the kids mother. Considering the fact it's still February pretty much settles the fact that it's not the mother. The argument that Zoey could be the mother is that by March the first day it rains Zoey pulls out the yellow umbrella from a closet or storage somewhere giving that hint away. Then address the smoking issue during that episode on how he quite. This brings me to my next argument which is:

If you guys remember from a previous season on his very first day of teaching architecture EVER he was in the wrong classroom. However he mentioned that his wife was in their. So far that has not been addressed yet. Of course we have to wait and see how this story unfolds.

I just wanted to make those case and points.

I just saw an episode of this the other day with Nicole Scherejgkfgfdjghjdfk from Pussycat Dolls guest starring

OMG that program about Beavers that Nicole and the brunette girl were a part of was fucking amazing, I was actually crying.

Brilliant, I need to watch more of this. Barney Stinson is a role model for ALL men

Great points and you're right about all the clues however they have directly told us that Zoey is not the mother, some may have forgotten or just not realized it. In the first episode of season 6, Ted tells his kids "The first time I met your mother was at the wedding." The wedding he is referring to appears to be Punchy's wedding, as Ted was shown to be the best man. Also, if you recall, it starts raining right when Lilly calls Ted inside the church. The rain was foreshadowing of the yellow umbrella.

As I said above, my guess is that Ted goes to "the wedding" with Zoey as his date but meets the mother there.
