Heath Slater - a guilty pleasure?

rge2010

Mid-Card Championship Winner
In Nexus this guy sucked. To many out there, he probably still does suck. But the last 2 weeks on Raw I have really enjoyed his promos. They wern't memorable, they wern't cutting edge they were just goofy and fun!

Slater makes me laugh. Calling Lauper and Richter 'broads' was brilliant. He is just so laid back and looks like he doesnt care how he comes across. He knows he could be on the chopping board so he is just having fun.

Keep up the good work 'One Man Rock Band'!!!

I enjoy watching Slater almost solely because he can sell and bump with the best of them. He makes guys look good. He worked a botch free match with Sin Cara....SIN FUCKING CARA!!!

He does have decent enough mic skills and he is probably the #1 enhancement talent in the E right now, which leads me to believe he will have a job for a while and so long as I can see him getting squashed by Vader and putting on quick paced matches with the other smaller guys then I will be happy

He sold for Vader like a champ. A really valuable asset. And his gimmick is obnoxious enough that you can enjoy watching him get squashed.

Heath Slater is one of those guys who you can't help but watch and enjoy. Sure, he's not the most talented guy but he is entertaining. I loved his work in the match with Vader, he did everything possible to make Vader's win look legit and that takes alot of professionalism. He could have come out and make him look like a joke but he sold well, had great facial expressions and came off looking better even after getting beaten by a veteran.

Considering how we saw Slater lose to Vader, I was sure we were going to see him laid out by Wendy Richter (and wasn't it kind of depressing seeing what she looked like after all these years?).

Well, at least the levels the company is sinking to in it's efforts to embarrass Heath haven't hit that depth yet. But watching him is starting to remind me of Chavo Guerrero's series of matches against Hornswoggle. Ugh.

If Heath is paying dues with the company's promise he'll be given some kind of push in the future, I guess it's all okay. But I'm beginning to get the feeling his tenure with the company is turning out more like Drew McIntyre's: they'll humiliate Heath because they have need for a young, nice-looking guy who takes pratfalls. Double ugh.

Not only did he look great against Vader, he was trusted enough to wrestle Bret Hart at MSG, and has wins against Chris Jericho and Edge as well. I'd say he has a future.

I am a BIG advocate of Heath Slater "The One Man Rock Band" sticking around in WWE.

Now that he is separate from Nexus, The Corre, etc. and has his own gimmick he has room to move.

I think he could be a very good mid-card heel but for that to happen a few things have to happen first:

1.) He needs a 'cheap stick' weapon... namely a guitar! Makes sense with his gimmick and he can use it to get cheap victories that will draw heat ... which leads me to ...

2.) He needs to get some more wins. He has to be built up to be somewhat legit to be legit enough to contend for a mid-card title. Wins on Superstars and NXT don't really help that much (not that he has really been getting much of those either) because most fans don't really know about it or really 'count it'. He needs to get wins on SmackDown or Raw... maybe against guys like Zack Ryder, Tyson Kidd, Justin Gabriel (esp. Gabriel would be a good start feud for him because of their history).

With his new gimmick and if he gets a guitar, we already know he is a terrible singer but let him do a few promos where he plucks away at the guitar very poorly and maybe tries to sing as well, that will draw heat, will leave to door open for a face to interrupt him and start a feud.

Personally, I hated this guy on NXT and even as a member of the Corre/Nexus I always thought he was the weakest link.

But as a singles star, I feel he has potential. He's like a modern day Honkey Tonk Man. He's not horrible in the ring and I think he really can be a decent midcard heel.

He seems to be in the "Chavo" role right now...in terms of interacting with the special guest stars each week that is when he's not losing squash matches to B. Clay or Sin Cara. I'm sure he'll be one of Ryback's first main roster opponents as well.

And yes, I think a guitar is a great addition to his gimmick. Though singing every week could make him the new Jillian Hall and we all know how awful that was.

I like how he's been portraying his character as of late. The last episode of RAW while people were on the fence about how to take the Cindi Lauper segment and started chanting, "WE WANT RYDER!", Slater just brushes them all off by saying "Yeah?? Well, nobody cares what you want..." and then continued gracing us with his incredibly rockin' vocals.

He even had this type of personality when he confronted FLO-Rida at Wrestlemania (I believe it was WM at least) and even though it was a stupid segment, he seems to have a decent feel for his character. He's playing a self-obsessed heel who is pretty much entirely unimpressed with ANYONE else other than himself. He kind of reminds me of the guys (back in the day) in rap battles. (Trust me, I'm going somewhere with this lol) While one person is rapping, the opponent has to stand in front of him and act as if he's not impressed through body language and snide comments. That's sort of like the swag Heath Slater has when he's facing someone. He's done it to Brodus Clay and Sin Cara so that at least shows that he has a sense of continuity when it comes to his own character. And I'll admit, guilty pleasure of not, I am impressed with that aspect of him.

I'm loving Heath Slater right now. He's hilarious...I'd like to see him in a feud with Santino I think it would be epic.

Heath has grown alot since his Nexus days and even though he's pretty much a jobber he's doing better than before. I was really suprised to see him on RAW this week, I mean new guys don't really show up much on RAW. It was cool seeing him do that because it showed me that Heath could actually go up and cut a promo with legends and have it happen on RAW. Hopefully, he gets put on tv more often because he's fun to watch and is the only remotely interesting comedy wrestler on WWE's tv shows. He is miles ahead of Santino's stale gimmick. Don't even get me started on Santino.

After his singing attempt this past Monday, it's a shame that Jillian Hall is no longer with the company. Their song stylings would have been epic (as in epically rancid). The two of them would have had more heat than a gas station explosion. On point, he is just what the WWE needs now, a name jobber.

only think about the gutiar i have a problem with is they end up making him into another jeff jarrett

Was Jeff Jarrett just another Honky Tonk Man though?

No, not really. I mean, I get what you're saying that if Slater added a guitar his gimmick and cheap tactics to win matches it would seem like a Jarrett copy but only if WWE was dumb enough to bring it up or try and make it the same.

Slater has enough of his own gimmick and in fact makes a lot more sense for him to have a guitar than it ever did for Jarrett.

A foreign object is a great thing to give to a heel to start a good run and get heat. I'm still waiting for Curt Hawkins push because he has that cane which he has used to get wins but not really on Raw or Smackdown yet.

WWE seems to be so low on good heels right now but all they have to do is start pushing some of their ready and willing Superstars. Heath Slater and Curt Hawkins both have the build and ability to be good mid-card heels and possibly more if they get a lot of opportunity and progress.

Slater should fued with Santino righta way... win that US title off of him and get on a run!

Ye Heaths comedic timing is pretty good, and he looks like the average guy which makes us think we could be wwe superstars too!

I couldve sworn that the heat he was getting was leading up to a Zack Ryder moment, being in his home town and all. Wasted opportunity for Zack you reckon?

I'm actually a fan of Heath Slater, have been since he was on NXT, then with Nexus. The guy cracks me up, I loved what he did during that Cyndi Lauper segment. I hope he sticks around for a long time. He's so much more entertaining than that boring Cody Rhodes. Would be nice for Heath to get a US or IC title run. :)

Heath Slater is easily one of my favorite low-level superstars in the WWE. He shouldn't be good, it doesn't make sense, but he is. The guy is entertaining and always brings his best, whether it be in a segment or a match, whatever. There's a reason he's put out there with guys like Vader and that's because he's VERY good at what he does -- he makes other people look like solid gold. People often herald Dolph Ziggler for his selling ability, but they need to take a look at Heath Slater -- he sells brilliantly, as has been seen throughout his career. He's the type of guy that the WWE will always need, even if it's a jobber capacity.

Heath Slater's got a fountain of potential, the way I see it. He's great as an enhancement talent, but he's good on the mic, and he's good in the ring. He can't just make other people look good, he knows how to work a solid match. Sure, Slater may not be the prototypical WWE superstar and you may not expect much of him, but the guy is an absolute professional. Some day, I wouldn't be surprised if Slater won a midcard title, as he can certainly rise up into a sort of jobber to the stars role, helping put over younger talents too. He has the potential to have a nice little niche career and there's nothing wrong with that.

Even during his nXt days I though Slater was good in the ring. Lately he has been really good in the comedy segments and I hope that it will lead to something.

I cant really put my finger on why....but I really like him.

I wont remember him if he was gonne....but I enjoy his promo's, even though his Mic skills are actually something not to be desired....and I think he sells up with the best of them... a heath slater squash match is believable.

The singing was funny....its actually everyone else in the ring on monday night that made that segment Boring....certainly not Slater. The new Gillian Hall? Please no, it was funny this time...dont sing again please.
Heath Slater is not destined for Titles, but Heath Slater has a job in WWE and I hope for now he keeps it.

Something tells me he will be doing this through out the rest of his time in WWE. I have to admit he made me laugh this past Raw, and isn't to bad in the ring either. It is actually quite entertaining to see him get squashed. I think he could keep his job for a while in this role.

Ok, for the past few weeks we've seen the One Man Band Heath Slater come out, cut decent promos and get beat down. I do believe WWE is trying to push Slater, even if it is as a jobber. My only question is, is anyone starting to warm up to Slater? I for one, have been a fan of his since the first season of NXT. He's decent in the ring, he can cut a decent promo, and he's not that bad at selling. So what are your thoughts about Slater?

He's forgettable. Doesn't have a great body or memorable move set. Has a largely generic look other than his red hair. Not someone that I would buy a ticket to see, and hasn't shown me anything that makes me want to watch him on television either.

Getting squashed by 50 year old wrestlers is not entertaining to me. Seeing the old guys come out is pretty fun, but once the bell rings it turns into a shit show.

I probably would feel different about him if he had a decent push, as opposed to this legend squashing gimmick that we'll have to put up with for at least another 4 weeks.
