Hardcore Holly

I just got done reading his book.

I used to be a pretty big fan of the guy. I remember picking him a lot in an old Smackdown game on the original Playstation. I also remember ordering the Royal Rumble in 2004 and looking forward to his match with Lesnar the most on the card outside of the Rumble itself, only to end up being very disappointed with it. The build-up to that fight was that Lesnar broke Holly's neck 2 years prior and Holly was now back for revenge. Holly remains the only guy I can remember that the Lesnar character has ever showed any kind of fear towards. Holly also destroyed Big Show during this time like it was nothing. For the match to end up basically being a squash still makes me scratch my head to this very day. It shows how truly shit WWE's booking can be at times.

Anyways, about a year after that Rumble I finally got the internet at my house and really started "smartening" up to the backstage stuff that went on in pro wrestling and came to not like Holly anymore due to the things I read about him (the Tough Enough stuff when it aired I thought was a work). Fast forward a little past that and I really started to hate him when he beat Punk on ECW, lol.

But yeah, point is, the last few years I really couldn't stand the guy, despite being a former fan of his.

I decided to read his book after hearing good things about it because, well, I love wrestling autobiographies. And I must say, his book is excellent. It didn't contain the wit and humor we've come to expect from pro wrestling autobiographies, but his stories are very intriguing and he's such a straight shooter, tell-it-like-it-is type of guy that you can't help but take him at his word. I still don't like the old school, "beat the young kid up to make sure he's tough enough to be in this business" mind-set, but that alone doesn't make him a bad guy. In fact, I'd say he's a very good guy... just a bit misunderstood and a little too old school for his own good.

Checking out his Twitter after reading his book and he seems to be in a really good place right now. He answers a lot of the fans and always seems positive and in good spirits.

So yeah... this thread is basically just a book recommendation. I guess you can share your thoughts on his work if you'd like, whether you think he's underrated or a piece of shit. But if you think he's a piece of shit, give his book a shot and see if he can convince you otherwise. And if you've read the book then I'd like to hear your thoughts on it as well.

Big fan of Hardcore Holly, and a big fan of the occasional wrestling biography, so I'll definitely be sure to check it out. I remember watching a hardcore holly wrestling class on youtube and his approach to wrestling is brilliant; very rough, but he always thought that was the point - trying to make it look like a fight.

I've heard nothing but good about the book.

Cheers for the recomendation anyway! I'ma try hunt that down now.

I agree. Having Brock be scared of Holly? Puh-lease.

I think he was the first person you feuded with in Smackdown vs. Raw 2007 or something like that.

Smackdown vs. Raw was such a great series up until they took away GM Mode. Every game after that it got worse. The concept of Road To Wrestlemania is so stupid . . . why the fuck do I want to play out something that I have already watched happen? And I like how on the older games, if you lost, it just went on to the next story, it's like your win's and losses mattered and affected the direction of your Story Mode. Since SvR 2009 it fucking won't let you continue unless you win. Predetermined story mode man. That shit not cool bruh lol.

Always was a fan. Tough guy & his dropkick was always one of my favorites. Read his book also & although it was not as good as Foley or Jericho's, it was decent.

I was always a fan of the Hardcore Holly character. Not to the degree of being a Steve Austin fan, but always a fan. I liked him best when he and Crash were going at it (early 2000 I think).

I always liked him (never really knew why since he never really did anything that stands out). Is his book really just stuff you expect or is it actually an eye opener, been debating on whether or not I should get his book (I don't have a lot of free time so it takes me forever to read a book)?

This thread reminded me I need to catch up on my reading. I have Goldust's book and Rey Mysterio's book sitting on my nightstand and I just keep forgetting to start reading them.

Looks like I might have to check out Bob Holly's book as well.

Excellent book, but Holly sucked.

So long on the roster and the highest praise most can give him is that he has a nice dropkick. That Crash though, how awesome was he!

There's nothing "shocking" in it I'd say, but he surely doesn't hold back on anyone. And it all feels honest rather than him simply bitching to feed his own ego.

You didn't get internet until 2005?

Yeah not in a home setting. Buying a computer and getting the internet was very expensive in the 90's and early 00's and I was into videos games and saving up for a car. Before then I could only get on at friends houses, the library, at LSU where my mom worked, etc.

I watched a lengthy Holly shoot interview a while back. I remember coming away liking him more than I did going in.

Still, he was a pretty bland utility guy. Nothing special at all.

Did he use "you know" way too many times in his book too? I remember some interviews with him where I would have headaches after it because he kept repeating "you know" so many times. Also quick question - his stuff about Benoit was alright or meh?
