Great Double Acts

Murfish

is losing his edge
I am referring to angles of wrestling that involve the use of a straight man and a comic. This is where wrestler A and B are involved some how and wrestler A(the straight man) will be rather serious, while wrestler B(the comic) will be goofy or a bit off. The humor of these angles can be great as it isn't just two people pulling a prank, but more a relationship(platonic or romantic) that spawns humor from their differences and interactions.

There have been many of these angles throughout wrestling. Angle & Benoit, Christian & Tomko, Angle & Styles, and recently Glamorella. I'd have to say that my favorite is probably the pairing of Christian and Tomko. Tomko was always a levelheaded guy that would have to deal with Christian's craziness. When Christian wanted Tomko to 'drop a beat', you could almost hear Tomko ask himself why he was still hanging around Christian.

Discuss the double acts of new and old, and tell about your favorites.

The first one that comes to mind is Bam Bam Bigelow and Doink.

Doink played the annoying clown great, and Bam Bam just continued what he always did. He got pissed and reacted to everything Doink baited him into. Their matches may not have been the greatest, but the promos worked, and could either make me laugh, or cheer for Bam Bam to rip his head off.

Another one I always liked was Jerry Lawler and Bret Hart.

Yes, Lawler was playing a good heel, and not all of the shtick was comedy, but there was some great comedy that came out of it. He said some very funny things about the Hart family, and the promo he made before the "Kiss My Foot" match was hysterical. Bret played the hero face that we loved, and there was never a time that we were cheering for Lawler. Lawler also had the added advantage of doing commentary, so he had more than enough chances to further the angle.

My favorite tandem was Booker T. and Goldust. My god these two just meshed so well together. I was watching a clip of them the other night and thought to myself..."Man, they were really good together" Not just in promos but they seemed to have decent chemistry in the ring. Booker T. always tried to play off that he was always angry, and Goldust would get that silly side out of him. Pure awesomeness.

RVD & Kane were a great tag team, had great chemistry in the ring together and RVD managed to bring out a more human side to Kane's character... before he turned into a mental monster. Their promos were decent for the majority of the time and they were good tag team champions.

I also forgot to mention Steve Blackman and Al Snow. Blackman was as straight as a 2x4. Then he was paired with Al Snow who is just a comedic genius. It was short lived but Head Cheese was an awesome duo. Shitty name, but they made it work. THey were never contenders for shit. But they did the best they could. I'll never forget Chester McCheesington.

Also cant forget Kane and The Hurricane either. It was just hilarious. But I will let someone else dive into this one. As I'm sure somebody has got to remember them.

I'm surprised nobody has thought of the greatest double act ever, The Rock and Sock Connection!

The Rock was the cool, take no shit, smackdown laying hero to the people who was a master of the microphone and he was teamed with the crazy, awkward, sloppy wrestling, sometimes just silly Mankind. And it was gold.

Want proof that these guys were the best double act ever? Check out the legendary 'This is your life' segment they had on Raw. It was genius on so many levels.

Yes, but The Rock wasnt stiff like other people were. He was cool, cocky, and funny. He wasnt out to make himself look serious as he was always cracking Jokes and had some funny one liners. Although they were a great team. I don't think they would fit under the criteria of Straight laced/Not humorous and then the comedy guy. They were both good characters who had a wealth of goos stuff to offer.

CM Punk & Colt Cabana in the Second City Saints trump them all, for me personally. Punk and Colt both debuted in ROH against one another, and there little streak as opponents all revolved around Punk being serious and Colt being the jokester. Fast forward a few months, same deal.... only as tag partners. And it was all gold. But what made it gold was not only was the act hilarious, but both could deliver in the ring and put on tremendous matches, whether it was against each other, or as partners.

Whilst HeadCheese was my first initial thought, I won't go further into it because Monkey already has. There are three other teams that spring to mind, two involving one very serious guy. Step forward William Regal, before the dating game and all that jazz, Regal was a very serious wrestler (much like he is now) yet was teamed up with two comedy acts. First it was that of Tajiri, first being Rega;s assistant, eventually teaming with him and becoming tag team champions. The other was that of Eugene one of the biggest comedy acts of recent times, him and Regal teaming was just gold.

The third team is that of the very serious 'Hardcore' Bob Holly, who would rarely crack a smile, let alone joke on with someone, yet he teams up with his 'Cousin' a cruiserweight who weighs at allegedly well over 400lbs! Another genius pairing!

Yessss!!!! Goldust could do it with anybody, remember Lance Storm? Booker and Goldust were classic. Heres one of my favorites that involves the rock, from King Of The Ring 2002. It always cracks me up. These guys were hilarious.

There are indeed a ton of these, but I'm going to go with one that's relatively forgotten: Charlie Haas and Rico. A pair of midcarders having a fairly decent tag title reign with absolutely nothing in common. Both actually had decent offense too, with Rico using that jump kick to the face and Haas rocking the Haas of Pain. Throw in Jackie Gayda nearly falling out of her top every week and how do you go wrong? Just a goofy as hell tag team that I for one always got a kick out of.

One that came to mind while perusing YouTube earlier, was Kane and The Hurricane.

Kane was at the height of his time in the tag division, and The Hurricane was insanely over with the crowd. While the Hurricane gimmick itself may not have been so funny, the fact that Helms took it so seriously is what made it easy to laugh at. The team worked well in the ring, and put on a few good matches before their split, which worked very well for both characters.

Ah it has to be Al Snow and Steve Blackman. I loved how Al was trying to get various gimmicks over with his tight-up partner. I mean for Christ Sakes look at Blackman's haircut, as staight-laced as can be.

The promo for their match at WM2000 was just crazy funny. Head Cheese 4 Life!
