Gas Prices

Welcome to My (And Not Sly's) House
This is the latest thing that makes me chuckle.

People will FREAK when gas goes up and down. My family makes a regular habit out of calling each other to say what the cheapest price they've seen is. The amusing thing about it: for the most part it makes almost no difference at all. Think about it: let's say you have a fifteen gallon tank. If gas goes up by say 20 cents a gallon and you're at absolute bone dry, you're only paying about $3 more. When you're already paying $30-40 to fill up your tank, an extra buck or two really isn't that big a deal.

So why do people lose their minds when gas goes up or down a few cents here or there? At the end of the day, you're probably paying about $2 more or less with any given weekly shift, and that's not a ton of money.

Yeah I don't get it either. If the gas was $3.25 one day and then $3.20 the next day, my wife acts like it's the greatest thing she's ever seen. It's FIVE CENTS! We hardly save anything on such a small decrease. Now if it went down to $2, I'd be a whole lot more excited.

My mom has literally driven 15 minutes away to get 3 cents off. I've tried to explain it to her time after time and she won't listen.

The funniest thing about that kind of petrol price watching is that people will travel further to get fuel that is only negligibly cheaper; a saving that is wiped out by the fact that they have travelled so far.

My grandad used to be like that. He would travel to the Republic of Ireland to fill up the car when there was a vast difference in price when the Euro originally came in. Then when the price difference began to skrink, he would take several petrol tanks to make sure he got his money's worth. The last trip he did, he took me with him and with travel costs and the lunch we had, he basically had spent the same amount crossing the island as he would have filling up a mile from his house.

I like it on the rare occasions that petrol prices drop because usually they are going the other way, and everytime they rise they seem to stay there, then a few years down the line you realise that you're refilling your tank almost twice as much as you used to but paying the same amount on each refill, thereby spending twice as much. Its a small victory but we'll snatch it with both hands thankyouverymuch.

Multiply it. Sometimes the small price gap can a bit bigger. If you say there's a difference of 3 cents from one station to another and the average you pay is 30 bucks that's a 90 cent difference. It's not much, but yeah.

Over here it's measured by liters instead for whatever reason. Premium is at 89 cents and Regular at 80 per liter. If you put Regular like I do (In complete disregard that the car is supposed to run exclusively on Premium fuel) I get... *drum roll* ONE MORE LITER.

Yeah, it's pathetic at times. But when the prices go up by 30 to 40 cents and then back down, people learn to do that.

The funniest one is when people hear the price of gas is going up tomorrow, so they actually line up to get gas before the price hike. Sometimes the lineups are really long, just to save 2-3 dollars? I just don't understand it.

2 or 3 dollars? Dude, that's like a half a combo at a fast food!

I looked through a bunch of old pictures of my family and I when I was 8 years old. I began crying not from the memories but because in one of the pictures gas was $2 a gallon.

I fucking hate those people, I get to the station to fill my tank to full before the price hike and theres a massive fucking queue. Pisses me off no end.

They're they same people that wait for ten minutes in a drive-thru when it's completely empty inside. (example: Tim Horton's in the AM)

I love the people who freak out about how expensive a gallon of gas is, then turn around & spend a $1.25 on a 20 oz. bottle of water & don't think anything of it.

you guys are lucky to be in america, because your government actually works for the people. over here in india, petrol price increases about 12 INR each year, and that has been the trend lately. and that too, per fucking litre. So basically speaking, only those of us that have a side business or take heavy bribes, will be able to buy and maintain a car lol

It depends on how far you drive for the price difference. If the distance is roughly the same, that $2 turns into $104 by the end of the year.

Are you telling me you wouldn't like an extra $104 in your pocket?

It was $.99 about 8 months before I was able to get my license. By the time I got my license, it was $1.50. I'm still mad about that. Stupid 9/11.

It's the difference between necessity and luxury. Gas is a necessity, we don't want to pay anything for necessity. Bottled water is a luxury, we don't mind paying for luxury.

I understand what you mean though.

If it's a reasonable difference, as in like down the same street, of course I'd go. This was inspired by my mom would will drive 15 minutes away to save that much money.
