Fix This!: Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels, WrestleMania 12

Hulk Hogan's Brother

Stop asking me what I'm gonna do!!!
I have always wanted to do a few threads like these in the Book This! section but I always wondered whether they would be allowed. Well, I guess there is really no way to know unless you go through with it.

The purpose of this thread is a simple one. Many a time we wrestling fans love to look back at past events and say that it would have been better had it been booked in a particular way. This is your chance to do that. It's like a Book This! brain teaser. I'll give you an event that went awry in the past and what you have to do is fix it. Give me your version of how you would have changed it so that it would have been better.

Now, without further ado let me present you the first problem in Fix This!

The Problem: People expected to see a 5 star classic when it was announced that Shawn Michaels would challenge Bret Hart for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 12. But the match they got to see was somewhat of a letdown. Some people call it a downright boring match while others call it a combination of a boring 40 minute match and a great 20 minute match after that.

Either way it is considered to be somewhat of a letdown and the booking is supposed to be it's main problem. People say that WWE got the story all wrong by giving each guy a body part to work over and that made for a boring match. Others say that each guy should have at least got a fall each heading into extra time. That would have made the match more exciting.

So what do I want you to do? Book Bret vs Shawn, WM 12. You can either book the entire match or even go with a basic outline of what you wanted to see with a few details on how many falls you would have booked, a few important nearfalls, the basic story of the match and so on. I look forward to your participation.

Here's my solution. I haven't really booked the entire match but I have gone with a basic outline of what I would have liked to see.

My Solution: This match needed to tell two stories within it, a story of speed vs skill and the story of experience vs naivete. I would have divided the match into three distinct parts.

Part 1: The match needed to start off with Shawn rabid on offense. If you see this match, you will hear Jerry Lawler say that he expected Shawn to be like a jumping Mexican bean but he was surprised on seeing him use a more technical style. That is exactly what Shawn needed to do. He would have started out fast and tried to take Bret down with numerous high flying pinning combinations. Shawn, in 1996, was as fast as any cruiserweight wrestler and would have been able to manage most of the moves.

Bret in comparison would have worked on Shawn's left arm. His finisher was the sharpshooter which worked on the legs and the back of an opponent and the announcers would express surprise as to why he wasn't working on those body parts.

I would have the first fall at around the 18 minute mark with Shawn missing his flying elbow drop and Bret locking in an armbar on his left arm. As we all know Shawn always uses the left arm when performing his elbow drop. Bret, as the experienced ringmaster, would know that and then the announcers would realize that that was the reason why Bret had been working on Shawn's left arm. He had planned the spot in his head all along.

Part 2: This portion of the match would involve Shawn realising that he cannot just blast his way to victory. He would try to apply a few submission holds, only for Bret to counter them. I would also book a nearfall with Shawn hitting a superkick and Bret falling to the ground around the 35 minute mark. Shawn would roll him back into the ring for a two count.

Bret would stall a bit after getting his fall. Might be a slightly heelish move but Bret was super over as a babyface and I think he would have gotten away with it. Bret would wrestle a bit defensively in this half knowing that he has already gotten one fall and it would take Shawn two falls to take the title away from him.

The second fall would come around the 40 minute mark. The commentators would remark how Shawn has been outclassed in this match and on top of that it does not seem that it is his day( after that nearfall with the Superkick). Shawn would get a pinfall at this point with a top rope sunset flip, a move Shawn used often in those days:

Part 3: No editing required here. It would be the same as what happened in the original match. Those last twently minutes leading upto the extra time and Shawn's eventual victory were great and it does not need to change.
