England 16 Ireland 20

Nitafrong

Póg mo thóin! :)
Did anyone else see the game? I have been in such a beaming mood since the match ended :D Beating England in the fortress of Twickenham is always pretty momentus and the match was extremely tight. I could barely watch the final couple of minutes.

Commisserations to England though who really did have us under the cosh for long peroids in that match. You are still in front of us on points difference though. Now if only you could beat France....:)

It's funny, only Irish care about this. they send 20 texts/FB status' about a sport that most of England don't care about. I was watching Newcastle v Watford, they won 2-1.

The fact that Ireland are usually so poor at sports that their one victory against England will give bragging rights for years (I still have NornIron friends talking about them beating England 1-0 about 5 years ago!)

I watched the last 20 minutes, all I have to say is, rugby commentators are angry people

You'd be surprised how many people in England love rugby since we won the World Cup in 2001, approximately the same amount opf people who started loving cricket since we won the ashes, or who started loving football when we won the World Cup in 1966 I am guessing.

Try getting any of those to shut up about those long dead acheivements. It aint easy.

Ireland have beaten England so often in rugby recently that it is starting to get repetitive and boring...

Actually, no it doesn't. Beating England never gets old mainly because when they beat anybody or win anything (in any sport) the rest of Britain has to hear about it forever and ever. Northern Ireland reminding the English of Healy's goal at Windsor is payback for 40+ years of having to hear about 1966.

England, or should I say the English media, only don't care about rugby right now because their team is not very good...

Case in point today. England had 70% possession and never really looked like crossing the gain line. Ireland on the other hand defended well for the whole game, had three chances and scored three tries.

On the whole, not that impressive a game

Winning the world cup (ie best in world) is our biggest achievement. Irelands is erm beating England.

The fact that you even need TWO countries to make one team is a fucking joke.

The English rugby team has a New Zealander playing in the centre and the best player in the England cricket team at the moment is an Irishman...

Well I guess it all comes down to context. England is what, almost 10 times the size of Ireland in terms of population and even more so when it comes to Northern Ireland. While Rugby isn't the number one sport in England, it isn't in Ireland either- probably comes third or fourth depending on where you are. So yes considering how much of a giant killing it really is to beat either France or England- can you not understand how some fans get a bit overexcited?

But yeah I always imagined rugby was fairly big in England- never seems any problems with crowds at games, and they run both League and Union.

In any case Imperator Barbosa I would agree with you that while the game wasn't technically anything it was still an absorbing contest- (at least for me) and very tense up to the final minute- as England/Ireland games have been invariably for the last number of years. Interesting to see France lift off the pedal against Wales- they did the same against Scotland.

But we all know who we should be applauding for their victory,

Italy.

That's the strange thing Nita. I didn't find the last 5 mins tense at all. Once Ireland went 20-16 up there was no doubt in my mind that the game was over. Normally, I would have been bricking it as Ireland are past masters of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory but today the England attack was so toothless that I felt that there was nothing to fear.

However, that we only won by 4 points against such a leaderless England side suggests that maybe Ireland aren't quite the force we were last year. Seeing Sexton get a start was good and I hope he doesn't let his lack of kicking success today get to him and some of the young subs looked promising too but having Geordan Murphy back at full back, as great a servant as he has been, is hardly forward thinking. Hope BOD is okay too...

I tend to get easily nervous I suppose :p As toothless as you may have thought Ireland- we have let last minute tries go past us so easily before that I tend to stay worried till the final whistle is blown

But yes as far as I remember the game last year was also pretty tight and it was at home too. I think I was more worried by inability to keep any possession and our worrying habbit of constantly giving away penalties with our forwards in the rucks. In fairness though they did do a lot of disruption there so I don't know how vital it was to the overall came. As you say though- another young replacement for Kearney would have been nice- but Kidney probably wanted experience on the field. I think BOD is ok- saw him at the end walking about- I wonder how long before the rumours start of Munster trying to scuttle Leinster :D
