Effective Secondary Finishers: Utilize them or Forget them?

It seems to me that more so in the past then the present, WWE superstars and divas have used a very wide variety of offensive maneuvers and finishers in their matches. While some of those superstars are gone and some are still here, it seems to me that the idea of a secondary finisher is slowly dissipating.

Personally, I am getting tired of seeing certain people set up for the same finale week after week. It gets repetitive and boring. I think that secondary finishers should be utilized more often in order to keep superstars on notice and fans on edge, so that there is no routine or predictability to the finale of a match.

Some finishers that I personally think would be great to be seen again are:

Edge's Edgecution
Rey Mysterio's West Coast Pop [following the 619, instead of the splash]
CM Punk - Anaconda Vice
John Morrison - Moonlight Drive
Maryse's French TKO
Melina's California Dream Submission
Beth Phoenix Glam Slam Submission

Just a few off the top of my head?

Do you guys feel the same way? Why or why not?
What finishers would you like to see happen more often?

I like how JoMo is mixing up starship pain and the running knee strike as finishers, he also has the C4 and Moonlight drive in his arsenal which I think he should use more. I agree that the more varied ways you can put an opponent away adds to the unpredictability of the match.

What was the California Dream Submission again?

I know this is in the WWE section. but the only one that i can think of is a TNA wrestler---AJ Styles. he uses the 450 splash more often now and the Styles Clash occationally, but would love to see him use the Spiral Tap more often, not just once or twice a year like he does.

You make a good point in that finishers should probably be scouted by now, hence the use of secondary finishers. Sheamus' Brogue Kick for one seems like it could come out of anywhere while the Celtic Cross requires a LITTLE setup.

It DOES add a little something, doesn't it? Morrison's Starship Pain could end the match, but if that fails, he can just bust out that knee-to-the-friggin-head thing.

I think Swagger has a good combo in the gutwrench powerbomb and the ankle lock. Gutwrench could end it, ankle lock could it, or it could be (god save your soul) a gutwrench and then the ankle lock.

I do like it when wrestler's mix up the finishes of their matches every now and then. Everybody loves a little bit of unpredictibility every now and then. It adds more dimensions to them and increases their arsenal of moves. I would like to see Alberto Del Rio and Daniel Bryan have non-submission finishers.

Secondary finishers are something that desperately need to be utilised far more often. They add a nice little element of surprise to the finish, unusually you see a secondary manoeuvre hit and you think "ok this will be a near fall" then suddenly the refs counts to three, it is a nice little surprise and a great way to end a match.

It also changes peoples finishing sequences up, usually you can see most matches ending well in advance, with Cena it starts with the shoulder blocks, with Orton the power slam, with Taker the throat slit, all of these things usually indicate that a match is about to be over. If you gave all of these guys secondary finishers it would change things up a bit and then people couldn't complain about those guys wrestling the same match over and over.

It's always a pleasure to see Kane do the tombstone

Cena has the STF and the AA

Orton does the angle slam now, he should start using it as a second finisher because he doesn't do the punt anymore.

I think Evan Bourne can benefit most from this secondary finisher concept, it would really enhance his SSP the same way the twist of fate enhances the Swanton Bomb

i like to see former finishers used in big matches. For example how stone cold used the million dollar dream on the rock at wm17. Or rhoads using the alabama slam at wm 26. It just shows their trying to through everything and the kitchen sink at their opponent to win.

Secondary finishers? Yes please! There are some finishers that just can't be used on everyone because the opponent's too big or the user's just too small to use it effectively. However, this secondary finisher should be something quick-strike, possibly out of a reversal. Example: WM 25's tag title unification match. Primo flipped out of a reverse suplex into a backstabber. I wouldn't be averse to seeing someone like Bryan or Bourne use a quick-strike move like a superkick (though it would be best on JoMo).

Taker has more than 1 as he has 3 tombstone, hells gate, or last ride
Big Show has at least 3 Showstopper Chokeslam, Final Cut, and KO Punch
Almost 80% of all wrestlers has a 2ndary finisher even Khali has 3: Brain Chop, Choke Bomb, or The Vise Grip. So they do have them but rarely use them.

You hit the nail on the head here I think. Using a wide range of moves, including ones that havent been utilised in years, in big matches, shows how the wresrler is trying everything in their arsenal and racking their brains to find a way to put their opponent away.

I think it good when a wrestler does this. For example, in a big match that runs for a good 20-30 minutes I would like to see Chris Jericho hit the lionsault, the codebreaker and the Walls of Jericho/Lion Tamer if he cannot put hia opponent away early.

Same with Undertaker. In big matches, Undertaker will still occasionally use the Last Ride, as well as the Tombstone, Hells Gate and Choke Slam.

Kofi has been using a lot lately... the SOS sometimes works, his trouble in paradise is an awesome quick strike, and he just won the world title with a huge cross body. I remember Cody Rhoads used to use a cross body as well when he debuted.

Keep them I reckon. for one, Most of the finishers can't be used against everybody so it makes sense to have a few finishers. it's also good if the person you're wrestling with can't sell one of them properly you just do the other one. I think it's a good thing to have two. It also means that if needed somebody can kick out of one of the finishes without making you look too weak only for you to do the second finisher to end the match.

I definitely like the secondary finishers.
I usually call them signatures and the main moves finishers (like in the SD!vsRAW games).

However, I don't like the idea of, Let's say, Edge retaining or gaining a championship on PPV with the edgecution.
But if used on the weekly shows or in tag matches, I'd love to see it.

My fave 'Signatures' that should be used are:
Edgecution - Edge
Top rope Hurricanrana - Rey Mysterio
Side Effect - Matt Hardy
Last Ride - Taker
Lionsault - Y2J
running enziguiri - Alberto Del Rio

I'm probably a little late here but I think Orton's punt is an effective move which he rarely uses... However I think there are some wrestlers who don't need another one, i.e Santino's cobra

Definitely keep them. For example, John Morrison. He may use a kick now to win matches, but only a few weeks ago, he had the C4 for week, which followed up the Starship Pain. The fact he's got all these different moves he could use is great. He could hit the SP, but then go for the pin, which gets kicked out of. This is why I like it so much, you never know what's gonna happen.

I'd love to see a Wrestler who had the ability to win matches every week, but with different moves. You never knew what his finisher would be. Not saying he has to use ones that already exist, but all these different ones that no-one had seen before, but all were good enough to win a match.

The difference between signatures and secondary finishers though, in my opinion is usually that the signature is the move the sets up to a finisher, not the finisher itself. Usually you don't pin after a signature.

Signatures would be in my opinion,

Edge's Edge O Matic
Randy's Signature Backbreaker / Dropkick... now Power Slam/Scoop Slam
John Cena's 5 Knuckle Shuffle

Last Ride and Edgecution are not really signatures in my opinion. Also I like the idea of using old finishers in big matches... its a nice touch, but I still think that we shouldnt have to wait for WrestleMania, or a big ass match to see some old great moves over again.

I would love to see that more, now that she's heel I’m hoping we'll see more of her move set.

I agree, I love secondary finishers, but I think the Anaconda Vise should be the finisher and the GTS should be the secondary finisher. Some secondary finishers I like/ would like to see more of :

-I think this should, without a doubt be her main finisher, but a follow up DDT does look even better

I quite honestly could care less. There's some finishers that can function well while being the secondary one. But there's also some that either doesn't make sense, or the wrestler as a whole doesn't even have a secondary finisher (Triple H anyone?).

In the end of the day, I don't think it would change much. It would spice up a few endings of matches, but quickly enough that would be come just as usual a thing as the next one. So trying to utilize them wouldn't mean much. But on the other hand, forgetting about them completely wouldn't necessarily be something that needs to be done either. So I'd say, why not just rest it in the middle?

Secondary finishers have two purposes

1) You cannot use the same finisher on everyone. I don't think that Punk can use the GTS on Big Show. So using the Anaconda Vice to put him away would be a better strategy. Also let's say that Big Show is facing Rey Mysterio. Mysterio posesses the agility to duck out of the way of a KO punch so it would be better to grab him and give him a showstopper. It just adds a bit of legitimacy to wrestling.

2) Secondary finishers contibute to nearfalls in long matches which make the match more entertaining.

Multiple finishers is definitely a good thing. It allows us to see different endings on a weekly match basis, and it allows us to see more dramatic endings at PPVs when the competitor kicks out of the finisher forcing the wrestler to use their other finisher.

I wouldn't say MOST wrestlers have 3 finishers, but many do. There are some notable wrestlers in the WWE that only have one: Edge, Alberto Del Rio, Swagger, Miz, Sheamus, and many others. The good news is there are many other ways they utilize to win matches, but adding a second finisher would be nothing but a good thing for these superstars.
