I posted a thread about character classes in the video games section, but limited it to just three basic classes. The reason behind that was to leave more complex character class discussion (among other topics) for this thread. Every single RPG that has come out after it can thank D&D for the fact that it even exists. Heck, even Final Fantasy started off as an electronic D&D counterpart on the NES.

Here are the things that I would like to discuss in this thread. (If you do not play D&D or other tabletop RPG’s then you can skip to question 4 and still be a part of the discussion.)

1. What character classes do you like to play as, why? No restrictions. It could be one of the 11 basic 3rd edition classes, or a prestige class, or even dual classed characters. Be as creative as you need to be.

2. What species do you like to play as, why? No restrictions. It could be something as simple as a human, or something as complicated as a hybrid of multiple species or even monster classes.

3. Do you prefer to DM or be a regular playable character? Why or why not? Are there any stories of fun campaigns you’d like to share? (It can be the storyline of the campaign itself, or antics that your character(s) had along the way)

4. Whether you have played or not, what are your thoughts on tabletop RPG’s such as Dungeons & Dragons as a whole? Do you like them, why or why not? For those who have never played one, is there any particular reason why you have chosen not to give it a chance?

5. Are you playing any campaigns currently? Feel free to share about them.

So to start off the discussion…. I have played as every single one of the 11 basic 3rd edition character classes before, but Barbarian and Fighter are my favorite. I like playing the role of the attacker in my parties and tend to fall back on these two classes most frequently. As for species, I like to play as elves, half-elves, and humans, but have played others on occasion. I prefer elves above the others, but they don’t always make good fighters so I’ve been human for most of my barbarian/fighter characters.

I have actually never DM’ed. I’d like to give it a try sometime, but over the many years I’ve played I have always been a regular playable character. My favorite campaign I ever played was back in 07 when myself and three others were playing as D&D counterparts of ourselves in a world much like our own where we suddenly got sucked in to become a warrior, rogue, and spellcaster while the guy DM’ing (in game) was stuck having to explain to our families and friends why we vanished. We would end up in various quests along the way where we had to compete against NPC’s and we would incorporate board games with the DM playing for the NPC, which got fun. Then Sephiroth from FF7, the Joker from Batman, and Sauron from Lord of the Rings all ended up in that world for an epic battle meant for each character, it got pretty crazy at that point. That campaign really stood out for me due to how different it was.

My thoughts on tabletop RPG’s as a whole are that I enjoy playing them, but not as much as electronic RPG’s. I have a tremendous amount of respect for them though, as they were a huge inspiration for countless classic video games that would come later with similar gameplay and creatures. Granted there are some people who take it too far, such as LARPer’s (Live Action Role Playing) but the genre does not deserve the negative stigma that it gets. It’s far more than a game for weird kids, it is a fantasy world that allows you to do whatever you wish, provided the DM lets you and you pass your spot check. I really enjoy them because they are a fun escape from reality after a long week/month/etc.

I am currently playing two different campaigns. One is more traditional. Technically it’s Pathfinder and not D&D, but the two are similar. I’m an elven fighter who has two Longswords enchanted with lightning and enough feats to ensure I do twice as much damage as anyone else in the party. The others are a rogue, a paladin, a bard, and a summoner with an eidolon. We are in the middle of trying to warn many nearby towns about a horde of monsters who have a dragon that are destroying everything.

The other campaign I’m currently playing is very different, there are 12 people playing it. No, I’m not kidding. We never really get anything done either because people won’t stop goofing off when the DM is trying to explain what’s going on. It’s loads of fun though, and the events get very controversial due to the innuendo that a couple of the guys constantly throw in. In that campaign I am an insane Paladin who has multiple personalities. One is the typical judgmental “holier than thou” Paladin, another is a bloodthirsty killer, a third is an idiot, and the fourth is a goof off. I roll an insanity check for him every few rounds on a D4 to see which of the four I should emulate next. He’s gone from slaughtering a horse for the fun of it to randomly busting out crying about the loss of the horse before, due to the insanity check.

So, let’s hear from you all now. I can’t wait to see your responses. Discuss!
