"Dream" Pop

I ain't talkin' bout not Justin Timberlake or Hannah Montana songs, I'm talkin' bout something different. Here are 2 of my (newly made) favorite songs of the Genre, and somethin' I keep puttin' on when I need a little pick me up.

Now, I really really doubt many people on the board will like the sort of music, I'd even feel pretty secure in thinking I'm the only one, but I had to share. Even though I only posted one band, there are plenty of people out there who have the same "style", tis just Owl City does it the best in my opinion. It's got simple lyrics, yet at the same time very complex; and listening to it almost makes it seem...ethereal. I'm not sure how else to explain it, but I cannot be upset or bothered listening to this type of music, and maybe that's the point.

I can't really make a big ole topic right now cause...its like 6 in the morning and I need to sleep, but I just wanted to see if I was alone in this guilty pleasure.

I too am a fan of ethereal music, songs that you can float away with, as they carry you far away into the depths of somewhere new. I wasn't too much of a fan of those two songs though- his voice is slightly synthesised or something and that puts me off. I know this shouldn't matter but his voice is also reminesant of the pop punk style- makes me think Metro Station or Blink 182.

Instead I am a huge fan of Sigur Ros, as well as a number of their Icelandic contemporaries like Olarfur Anderson and Johann Johannason, who both do really interesting classical music with a bit of a post rock twist. For a more nice poppy sound I also like Hello Saferide and El Perro del Mar who craft innocent summery songs. Patrick Wolf can also be really good- everytime I hear Magic position I can't help but smile :)

I guess if we're talking dream-pop we could also segue into shoegazing bands which sort of play on the fence, like My Bloody Valentine, Coctau Twins, Kitchens of Distinction, The Cranes, all those could be called dream-pop as well. Funny how big Owl City is getting, too. I'm from Minnesota so I guess it's always cool to see a guy from my neck of the woods getting success.
