Domestic football - spam version

Can I just stress that sports direct aren't paying anything for the naming rights.

Changing the name has the potential to attract additional revenue streams.
Not changing the name does not have the potential to attract additional revenue streams. It's not like there isn't a healthy precedent for stadium sponsorship in football, and a mediocre club looking to lift itself out of mediocrity would be well advised to pursue and promote every potential source of revenue that it can find.

Nobody is going to stop supporting the club or attending the games on account of the name change, so I judge it to be essentially consequence free.

Lets look at the renamed stadiums. They're all new ones so places like Emirates has always been Emirates.

Then there's sponsorship. Newcastle City council have already stated they aren't changing any road signs nor the metro station name. Local press have stated they won't call it by their new name and even Jeff Stelling has said that.

What's 8million a year going to bring? Considering a mediocre like Andy Carroll cost Liverpool £35million and Torres cost Chelsea £50million.

It's an absurd thing to do, and it's a terrible name.

I'm with Lee here. It'd be different if it were a big multi-national company, giving you 50,000,000 a year, but's it's fucking Sports Direct.

It's sports direct paying nothing a year.

Plus there's the timing. They just did the season ticket offer with 4,000 sold. It's an internation break followed by two away games. Aside from end of the season you couldn't get further away from it.

So? That's only relevant if you think sentimentality is more important than fiscal solvency.

The media and local government will get in line once they finish there little 'protest'. More importantly television companies will have a legal obligation to name the stadium correctly on account of football sponsorship rules. People are projecting that Newcastle will struggle to find a sponsor due to all this backlash, which is probably the reason why it's been done with Sports Direct now, so that people get a change to get it all out of their system before negations start on a real sponsorship deal.

Well considering that you owe something like £150,000,000, and that your wage bill alone consumes 90% of your club's total revenue, and that champions league football seems unlikely, I'd say you need to earn money wherever you can, because you're not earning anything under your current model.

It's an absurd thing to do, and it's a terrible name.

The Walkers Stadium was a pretty shit name as well, but it worked out pretty well in the long run. It's a logical progression for a club living beyond its means.

We are not 150mil in debt and are due to break even next season.

The walkers stadium doesn't exist anymore, it's called the King Power Stadium and from the day it was built it was called the Walkers stadium but it's a local brand so it obviously has an impact on local commerce.

Our wage thing was 90% before last season started, this season it's much lower.

All in all it isn't that big of a deal but I'd like to know what goes on in his head.

I'm sorry to say that he's probably ahead of the game. Eventually most clubs who own stadiums are going to be looking at this kind of move. The game is becoming more and more focused around money and the rich-poor divide is growing steadily larger. The poorer clubs are inevitably going to be looking to pick up extra revenue wherever possible.

It's all a part of football's dystopian future where kits more closely resemble motor racing jumpsuits.

Fuck, England have beaten the Spain so for the next 8 or so months all we are going to be hearing is "We beat Spain that means we are the world's best team and we're gonna win the Euro's" then after the group stages are over "I can't belive we lost to Fucking Poland"
