Domestic football - spam version

At what point do I have to scream either get rid of Arsene or let him spend?

What do you suggest, kidnapping? He can't buy if clubs refuse to sell or players don't want to join. Frankly, anyone calling for him to be sacked needs a slap.

I read earlier this week that Madrid might wait until transfer deadline day to really push for Bale, then I just noticed this.

Transfer Deadline Day - August 31st
Arsenal Vs Spurs - September 1st

You can imagine how badly Spurs would take losing that game if Bale goes the night before. I can't see it happening.

The deadline day is the 2nd of September, because the 31st is a weekend.

At what point do I have to scream either get rid of Arsene or let him spend? Whatever backroom fracas or personal choices it is that Arsene makes, something needs to change in that club. And there is nothing more delusional than football fans. They just refuse to reason.

When Arsene Wenger got to Arsenal, they had players like Merson and Adams who were legitimately alcoholics, and he came up with revolutionary ideas like 'hey, Tony, how about you don't get ********d and then have a fry up'. Wenger was ahead of the curve then, and it suited him immensely.

The reaction to his transfer policy is a little overblown- people make out he gets the players from thin air, which is kind of true for guys like Fabregas, but mostly he bought established international players he could get cheaply like Vieira, Henry and Overmars or players who were successful in the French league like Pires. He's done that again recently, the trouble is, everyone else is spending much more.

Ultimately, though, the problem is that Arsenal appear utterly unambitious. That is why Nasri, Clichy, Van Persie etc. left and is why Higuain etc. wasn't moving heaven and earth to get there. You absolutely cannot have your club ethos being '4th place is like a trophy' and expect anyone to want to go there. It's looking increasingly less likely that Suarez will move, they've missed out on a lot of players, and now they've lost the first game of the season at home against Aston Villa. Who is going to want to move to Arsenal? If they don't beat Fulham next week (and this is reasonably likely, they've only won 2 of the last 5 there) they're season is looking very bad already.

I've long been of the suspicion that Arsenal is being run for profit in a way that none of their competitors are, and that Wenger is on board with this. They're right up there near to top of the wealth rankings despite spending a tiny fraction of the output of the clubs around them and winning nothing for the best part of a decade. They tend to fixedly buy low priced, ideally young, targets who there is a reasonable chance of moving on at a profit despite having the resources available to them to recklessly hurl wads of cash around.

I have literally nothing legitimate to back this theory up - but it sounds pretty good to me on paper.

Well, the old explanation was that they haven't spent because they've been paying for the Emirates. That's possible - they certainly would have been caught out by having to sell the Highbury flats in the property crash.

One thing that is consistently overlooked though is the fact the Wenger's biggest buys are often really shit - Reyes, Hleb, Arshavin etc. The other thing is that Walcott only got convinced to stay when they said they'd play him up front. Buying Suarez or Higuain wasn't exactly going to cheer him up.

Waaaah how dare we consistently qualify for the champions league. Waaaah we've not won anything in 8 years. Waaaah!

Try 1969 since your last trophy and then we may have a chat.

Not the cricket score I had expected it to be, a combination of Chelsea dropping off and Hull improving made for a more competitive second half. One thing is for sure I think Mourinho will definitely want more defensively from the likes of Mata, Hazard and Oscar.

Arsenal first losing in the first round of the Premier League

Arsenal Aston Villa 3:1 how do you think about?

I'm off tomorrow but I hope Sky don't use their Top Gear studio tonight.

It's like Moyes doesn't really want to buy Fellaini, but is just flirting with an old flame.

The move for Baines is a funny one, he is a great player but Evra toned down his buffoonery last season and there is some hope that Fabio could manage to mirror his brother on the opposite flank in the future. A slim hope, granted.

Hull could have done with starting Huddlestone and Livermore yesterday, wasn't impressed with the first half performance but I saw enough in the second to make me think we can stay up.

United will sign someone. It's becoming puzzling for us United fans who that will be. If Fellaini was a top target they should have just hit the clause when it was in his contract. Also wouldn't be surprised to see Rooney go after the Chelsea game next Monday.

Got 2 goals out of Buttner, which is a nice enough return. I think Evra got a couple as well after a few seasons of 1 or 0, so Buttner served a purpose after all!

Yeh, it's not been a great transfer window but part of me is pleased that Moyes is wanting to get to know his squad and bring on some of the younger lads before rushing into a marquee signing. Not saying I wouldn't mind seeing Ronaldo back in red though
