I've done illustrative versions of photos of musicians I've found online. While I was reading up on it said it was ok seeing as it's not the original work but I also read it's not because they're based on pre-existing stuff.

I was going to say they're unoffical but I'm still confused as to whether it would be ok to sell prints of them. I don't want to be done by the copyright police so any help would be appreciated.

Illegal? Meh. If you're printing them on t-shirts and selling them by the dozen, you'll have a problem. If you're just selling a few laminate prints, you probably won't. Regardless, you'll get a cease and desist letter saying "cut the shit" before anyone actually sues you.

Funny story, as part of my disc golf business I have a design in which I put Ron Jeremy's face on a disc called a "XXX". He was in town promoting his brand of rum a couple years ago (it's actually pretty good stuff too!), and so I took a couple of discs to have him sign them. He said "y'know, my agent might have a problem with this...." Then, after a dramatic pause, he said "I think it's really awesome though. You think you could mail me one? I'll send you some DVD's."

Which is how I found out Ron Jeremy now directs horror films.
