(First of all I know there's a general Reaction review/comment thread, but my point here is about the bigger picture, TNA as a whole, etc, so I hope this thread is allowed to stand on its own.)
Let me clarify the thread title. I find Reaction to be "unbelievable" in the sense that I actually find it to be a damn good show, and it's hard to believe that it's produced by the same company who has that mess called Impact on the air directly before Reaction.
I have to say I think Reaction is one thing TNA is doing right. It's a fairly original idea in their world of ripoffs and re-hashes, and it's a fairly good idea at that. TNA capitalized on the fact that the majority of fans have an interest in what goes on behind the curtain (hence websites like this). We are fans of the business overall, not just fans of what takes place in the ring, and not just marks for a product. WWE used to air shows like Confidential that had features like visiting superstars at home and learning more about their lives, and I always found it very interesting. We like to feel like insiders. We like seeing what happens backstage after a match instead of thinking these guys disappear behind the curtain and forget about their feuds until the cameras are on them next week.
While Reaction doesn't really break character or storylines, it still comes across a bit more "real". The performers, especially in terms of talking/promos, seem a lot looser and more relaxed, and frankly BETTER in the segments on Reaction. Take tonight for example. During Impact, we had the EV2/Fortune confrontation, and I was embarrassed listening to stupid stuff like AJ saying "you have something to say? SAY IT! SAY IT! SHUT UP!". Um...ok. Followed by Tommy Dreamer's "this whole crowd thinks you suck! And we think YOU SUCK TOO!". Oooh, ouch.
I like that Reaction almost feels like a shoot. The visual style is great, mostly handheld cameras running around backstage, chasing down confrontations and fights. Raw's 900th episode just reminded me of what WWE considers a shoot fight, with the old footage of Triple H breaking into Randy Orton's house, and having cameras positioned perfectly around every corner, and out on the front lawn, waiting for someone to come tumbling through the bay window like a movie set. Not believable. Not fun. No sense of urgency or chaos.
Some of the best moments and eras of professional wrestling share something in common, it was always best when it was gritty and real. People loved ECW. It took place in a bingo hall and wasn't flashy. People remember Raw is War and the Attitude era, when the promos were great and the arena was a Titantron with red curtains on the side and not 27 HD screens. I think Reaction is tapping back into that forgotten aspect. Just because we know wrestling is fake (or predetermined, whatever term you prefer), doesn't mean it should come off completely staged like a professional movie shoot.
So that's my opinion. I would call Reaction the best hour of wrestling currently on TV, except that it doesn't really involve any wrestling. It's hard to believe that it is produced by the same company who makes me cringe with the cheesiness on Impact. I would like to see many of the stylistic aspects of Reaction to start bleeding over into Impact. Rather than a subpar wrestling show and a "novelty" show that airs afterwards and actually keeps my attention, I would like to have one good solid TNA program.
So what do you think?
Do you stay tuned for Reaction after Impact?
Do you like or hate anything about it?
