Dixie Carter's Huge Interview: Talks Boot Camp, PPV's, Expansion & More

Shadow of Darkness

Occasional Pre-Show
Hell Yeah...

TNA President Dixie Carter was interviewed by Josh Modaberi of The American on a number of topics. Below are some quick highlights.

On British Boot Camp:
"British Boot Camp was a tremendous success, I’m so proud of what’s happened there. I think the UK has been so great in supporting us and the British fans. I want to help build back British wrestling; there are so many great, talented people over here and we’ve got some exciting ideas."

The possibility of a UK PPV:
"People always ask me about having a PPV in the UK and here is the only reason why I haven’t done a PPV: not as many people watch the PPVs as the television show, and I want millions and millions of people to see it worldwide. I think it would be great because you would see longer matches and there won’t be any commercial interruptions and things such as that. I wanted to showcase the British fans, I wanted them to be seen worldwide by everybody so people know how fantastic they are. Yes, eventually we will hold a UK PPV."

TNA's new Pay Per View changes:
"To cut down the PPVs was a difficult decision because you’re giving away millions of dollars to both your top line as well as the profit line on the balance sheet. We do have success in that. It’s always been the traditional way of doing wrestling but I feel we’re in a place right now where we have to shake things up and we need to look at things differently. It is a big financial risk on our part to do without it but I feel like it will make the PPVs we do much more special and I really feel it will make television mean more. We’ll have an opportunity to let programmes breathe, give away more PPV-quality matches on television, and then when we do have a PPV I know everyone of my guys are going to be fighting to be on that card and it will just be interesting to see how that plays out."

On how the One Night Only Pay Per Views will differ:
"It is so hard to build up a paid PPV-quality card in just four weeks, so here is a chance with this One Night Only series to come up with a dream concept and to put dream players in there. There doesn’t have to be back stories: you can create dream match-ups or see a certain gimmick. We are going to be having a lot of fun with these and I think we’ll come up with some really great programming."

Taking Impact Wrestling on the road:
"That is the goal starting this year. We’re close to making a big announcement, another one besides the PPVs, which I think will have a great impact on the show, pun intended. Taking the show on the road is the natural next step for us. It’s expensive touring and it’s not that I haven’t wanted to be on the road but it’s a business decision just like losing the PPVs. I’m not going to put this company in any financial trouble, so everything we have done has been very conscious, people were saying we weren’t going to stay in business for ten weeks and here we are going into our 11th year and having more success than ever and that’s because we make good business decisions."

On the future for TNA:
"Expanding outside of wrestling I think is important in order to grow the core product globally. Coming up with more licensing and sponsors, more programming - in the United States we just have one show and our competitor has ten hours of television a week so it is hard to compete. We have more television in the UK and that shows you how competitive we can be when we have more exposure, so that would be our goal in the United States. Again it’s not because I haven’t wanted to, it’s just contractually I haven’t been able to due to our contract agreement with Spike TV. But that is changing as well. I think all of these things combined will make for a very interesting 2013."

So what do you Guys say... Brotha... 2013 is for TNA...

Hell Yeah...

-In light of the current state of the industry, and the overall entertainment landscape, fans had been calling for less PPVs and for TNA to develop a more modern approach to the PPV format.

They listened and delivered a new format that should produce something alot more fun to follow this year.

-Fans had been saying for a long time that it would be in TNA's best interest to start airing Impact as a live program, feeling that the lack of spoilers and the increased atmosphere that naturally goes along with being live would aid the quality of the TV product.

Now with the exceptions of holiday tapings and overseas tours they have obliged on that as well.

Now Dixie is teasing that TNA is on the verge of listening to the fans again and giving them the other two major things that they have been calling for- another television outlet to help to feature the entirety of their roster and allow all the divisions a chance to be featured and, perhaps the biggest move of all, taking Impact back onto the road.

No way can accuse TNA of not trying to give their audience what it wants to see. They have surveyed the wrestling landscape, listened to wrestling fans, and are routinely working to make TNA wrestling a brand that is evolving as it attempts to grow its viability and increase its fanbase. They are not just sitting on their hands, doing the same things, and hoping for that the occasional chance to make a splash signing will be enough to grow their popularity the way they have in the past.

You really have to commend TNA in its efforts to evolve its product for the fans. Kudos Dixie.

Totally agree but the one thing you forgot is OVW! Tna fans had been asking Tna to develop their own stars and that's what they are doing. Tna is becoming a true alternative and Dixie is proving all her naysayers wrong. She is a great business woman.

I'm glad to hear British Boot Camp was a success. Although maybe she's just saying that for the sake of it. Did it do well in ratings? As for the UK PPV, if they're going to market it to the US it would have to be taped due to timezones. If it was live for UK audiences to buy, I sure as hell would buy it. In fact I would definitely attend it! A UK PPV would be something really special to see live.

Dixie did an interview in her house with Borash on Xplosion. It was very similar to what's been written here actually. She said that going on the road was her new year's resolution.

I am really happy whenever I see TNA take bold steps that reaffirm their goal to grow. The past couple years have been full of hope but slow on growth, and that shit happens in business, if you're good at what you do or if you aren't.

That being said... after Dixie's Twitter abuse in 2011, I take whatever she says with a grain of salt. A larger grain than I do for most things in professional wrestling. Not because I think she's trying to pull the wool over people's eyes; I think that she often gets ahead of herself, to the detriment of TNA's public relations. (Kudos to whoever got her off the social media.)
