cross platform

I have heard rumors of cross platform gaming for some time. I imagine playing on my computer against people on consoles. I understand that xbox live has a marketing purpose, but isn't Microsoft smart enough to sell and xbox live package for windows?

I can see a million people going out and buying warcraft for 360.

I guess what I want to know is what are your thoughts, and if you have heard about any progress, or if I got lied to (that is a run on, and I'm not sure what punctuation mark to use)?.!"

Hm I believe that actually works already, with games such as Final Fantasy XI... I'm not sure right now, so correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's actually possible to play that game both with consoles and PCs on the same servers...

Could be I'm mistaken though, and each platform has their separate servers...

You already can with certain games.

I've done it with shadow run.
Eventuality you will be able to do it with halo 3.
It's a newer feature so they are still working the kinks out of the system.
It can be real lagy when you're playing with people on a different system, that's why they don't do it with all the games yet.
