Credible or Cartoony?

Lee

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it's Supermod!

So another Lee blast from the past and I'm watching some old WWF matches. We have a guy who is a Warlord, a clown, a man who has a job to repossess cars, typical hillbilly hicks and frankly just over the top characters.

Then the shift happened and we went from that to more credible characters, people like Stone Cold, Kurt Angle, Edge, Cena, Randy Orton...characters that are very believable.

The over the top character is a dying breed, yet in recent times have been ridiculously over...

Look at The Hurricane, a wrestler who believed he was a superhero and was pretty over. Now as Hurricane Helms, he's just not that over.

Santino Marella, as much as I dislike the guy, is pretty over with a lot of fans, he once again is a very over the top guy.

Then look at Undertaker/Kane, Undertaker was the phenom, the deadman whose power came from the urn. Now he's just the phenom who's pretty big and wins at wrestlemania, Kane was the Big Red Machine, a powerhouse, he lost the mask and now he's just an old slow guy.

Look at Eugene, the guy had a gimmick of a ****** yet was ridiculously over despite not being all that great in the ring. Obviously there are more in recent times such as Goldust and Boogey man, but I'll leave that for now.

So I ask you what you prefer...

Do you prefer the OTT almost cartoon like gimmicks of old, or do you prefer the more credible gimmicks of today...or do you prefer a mix...ones that are OTT but are still credible.

I prefer the realistic guys who are just themselves amped up, guys liek Rock, Jericho, Austin, Angle etc. Obviously having totally serious, totally realistic guys will just make it crap and take away the spectacle and story aspect of WWE, but at the same time I firmly believe if Hogan or Warrior debuted today people wouldn't buy into it.

If they are good enough to get over without a cartoony gimmick then I prefer them like that. Guys like The Rock, Austin, HHH, Orton, Angle etc. but for the guys that are realistic but aren't over I wouldn't mind seeing them with some sorta gimmick. Like Hurricane Helms for example, when he was Gregory Helms he was a nobody but that gimmick saved him. I think there are a number of guys on the roster that get no reaction now but if they had some sorta gimmick it may help them. So I guess my answer is a little bit of both. I don't really care for the entire roster to be normal characters but I wouldn't want them all being over the top either.

It all depends on the person.
For all intents and purposes Santino is a cartoony gimmick.
If they are exciting to watch and dont need a gimmick thats cool but if they can find a character that works for them thats cool too.
As long as its not too over the top like Glacier or The Yeti.
So i guess my answer is I enjoy both, when the gimmick is actually entertaining
