Country Music

I Am The One Who Knocks
I can't believe nobody has made a thread about country music yet. Maybe I'm just the minority. Its quite simple really any fans of country music? I mean real country like Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson and stuff like that.

To me this new age country bullshit doesnt cut it. There are a few that try and keep it country like Toby Keith(who is my personal favorite artist of all time), Trent Tomlinson, Chris Young, George Strait, and a few others. I can't stand turning on the radio anymore and hearing the crap come out of it. By crap I mean Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, and alot more. Does anyone feel the same way I do?

Like a line in one of my favorite country songs says....

"Give me some Hank, Give me The Possum and a screaming guitar on top. Country is my Rock"

I'm not a massive fan but i do like some old school song's. Singer's like Slim Dusty, Lee Kernagon(s/p?) some of the new one's lack the spirit that used to be there. I suppose the only reason i like country music is becouse i like songs that have a story to it instead of just repeating your name over and over again. My all time favourite would be
Kenny roger's and slim dusty. Kenny roger's song's are known all over and the gambler is still a massive hit today. i must confess i even like Jeannie C Riley's song harper vally P.T.A it's quite catchy and the storie is funny I.M.O.

Rascall Flat's lol this is a guy that wishes he was Country. he would have to be by far one of the worst so called country singer's.

Monkey_Mania,
I'm also surprised that no one has mentioned Country. I'd always hated it, and I know a lot of other people do. Last summer, my older brother and my mom went ona some Country wave, and it really pissed me off. But if you just give it a chance, I found that it's actually pretty good. I'm more of a Classic Rock listener, but Country, in some cases, is great.
You mentioned Johnny Cash & Toby Keith - both are great. Rascall Flatts absolutely suck, and Carrie Underwood is sexy. :)

As a child, I spent a lot of time at my grandmother’s house; she’d play country and bluegrass while she cleaned and we watched the Grand Ole Opry and Hee-Haw every weekend. She impressed upon me that real country should make you want to tap your foot, it isn’t a sound produced in some studio, and all you need is a guitar (not electric), harmonica, bango, and vocals. Some of my favorite country artists remain Roy Acuff, Hank Williams Sr., Patsy Cline, Charley Pride, Roy Clark, The Statler Brothers, Kenny Rogers, and Alabama.

Today’s country music isn’t the county music I grew up on. I understand times changes, but since the early 90s I feel that country music has been losing its identity (e.g., what makes it country). Especially when I can turn on a pop or mainstream radio station and hear supposed “country” songs/artists (Taylor Swift, Faith Hill, and Rascal Flats are just a couple examples). George Strait, Randy Travis, and Josh Turner are a few artists I enjoy for their more traditional sound.

i used only listen to country music but after i started listening to Rock i found out that most country sucks ass. The only good country singers are the one's that dont try to sound like rock or pop a few of which are Dierks Bentley , Josh Turner , Little Bigtown ETC. if you listen to those country artists the music is good but if you start listening to the ******s like Big and Rich , Tim Mcgraw etc the music sucks.

BTW Everyone is hating on Kenny Chesney and Rascal Flatts. theres nothing wrong with either one of them they just aint that old country bullshit that everyone seems to love

Well I'm glad this thread isn't about "modern country" which shares about as much resemblence to a Hank Williams or Merle Haggard song as an ABBA's Greatest Hits album.

I'm a fan of old school country music. I'm a fan of real country music. This Sugarland and Rascal Flatts bullshit makes me sick to my stomach. Hank and Cash would be pissed if they heard the shit that the CMT channel funnels out to the masses and calls "country", though it's really nothing more then your regular every-day radio-friendly pop music with a little country twang.

Give me some Willie, Give me some Merle, give me some Cash and some Williams and some Jennings. That's real country music. Country music should never be happy-go-lucky like all the new crap is. Country music, just like the blues, is about pain and expressing that pain through music. That's why the best country is sung by those with gravel for voices.

Thank god for XFear. You share my sentiments exactly. Today's country is not country at all. With the exception of Toby Keith, and few others. Thats just my opinion though. These new country artists can't even string Merle, Willie, Waylon, Johnny or anybody else in that era for that matter guitars. Kenny Chesney has got to be the absolute worst country artist ever. I don't care if he sells out arena's all over the world. He flat out sucks. Same with te ultra poppy Rascal Flatts. Why are these guys popular. Oh because they sing crappy music for the girls. Thank God I have all of the old guys on CD so I don't have to listen to the fucking radio.

Are you like 70 years old or something? because the only people that like that old shit is old people. I bet you're the same kinda person who bashes every kind of music but country. Country is ok but its stupid because all they try to do is get their music played in the mainstream. If they just catered to the people who actualy wanted to listen to it they would be ok.

And Toby Kieth is just as bad as any country singer.

Are you like 70 years old or something?

69, I'll be turning 70 next may. Im actually 21.

because the only people that like that old shit is old people.

Not true, I know plenty of people my age who prefer older country to this uber poppy new age country bullshit we are given to listen to. It's simply not country anymore.

I bet you're the same kinda person who bashes every kind of music but country.

On the contrary, I love all types of music. As a matter of fact I am a huge fan of 80's metal. I like some rap, and even some pop music too. I also really enjoy classical and jazz music too. So to say that I only like country is ridiculous.

Country is ok but its stupid because all they try to do is get their music played in the mainstream.

I don't care who you are in the music business. That is you're number one goal. To get mainstream coverage. If you're not doing that then you need to rethink you're career choice.

If they just catered to the people who actualy wanted to listen to it they would be ok.

Maybe they are trying to get some new fans to listen to their music. Its a novel concept really. To try and get more fans so you make more money. Nah.....that'll never work, it didn't work for Elvis. and it didn't work for Garth Brooks.

And Toby Kieth is just as bad as any country singer.

Oh no you Ditn't :lmao:

I enjoy country music. As a kid, growing up, it's all I listened to. I grew up listening to Hank William's Jr. He's one of my favorites mainly because I know a few things about his personal life. Granted it's only because they made a movie out of it. I enjoy his music too. My favorite song by him is I think it's called "There's a Tear in my Beer." I would also enjoy seeing him live. Granted I'm not too much thrilled about his newer music.

I like country music alot. However, not the mainstream country like Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood or Rascal Flatts. A bunch of Nashville sell out shit. In my opinion, the best country is Texas country. Now, chances are that if you didn't or don't live in Texas, you've never heard true Texas country. Texas country is for musicians who are just starting out or musicians who just wanna "Fuck off, Nashville." Just like Willie, Merle, Hank etc. The good old stuff. Texas country is way better, in my opinion, than Nashville country, or known better as Mainstream Country. Some of my favorite Texas artists are Bleu Edmondson, Reckless Kelly, Eli Young Band (pre late 2008) and Deryl Dodd. Their music isn't real popular because it's only mostly played in Texas. But their music can be easily found anywhere on the internet. If you give it a try, I'm sure you'll like it.

Taylor Swift: I don't exactly have a great reason for liking her, other than her voice is so pure it could put you to sleep.

Roughly all of her songs are in relation to her relationship life, and that's ultimatly and likely going to kill her career.. but for the time that is, I love almost everything by her. Her duet w/ Def Leppard was amazing as well, and the song "When Love & Hate Collide" is definately a new top favorite of mine, thanks to her singing part of it.

I ain't a fan or country music by any means but my grandparents always tell me that today's country is just shit. It may be recorded in studios now days but sometimes recording it in studios is either just settling for something that sucks ass or is a cop out for not giving an effort. On the flip side though some of them are hot as hell. I would definitely spend the night with Taylor Swift if you know what I mean.

Thats because today's country is NOTHING about country at all. It's all this "look at me and what my voice can do" bullshit. Sure I like good singers. But give me someone with some fucking hurt in his voice. Or maybe a cup of jack in his hand while he is playing. Thats REAL country. Give me a song about losing your woman and then maybe just finding jesus and overcoming the odds to become a better person. If that ain't country I'll kiss your ass.

I think Taylor Swift is a great person for the Country Music Association to put their hopes towards expanding the industy. Taylor Swift is an excellent performer, she has a great voice, writes some good songs, and had an excellent image. I am not the biggest country fan, in fact the music I typically listen to is nothing like country music. But I can listen to Taylor Swift and really enjoy it.

Yea I agree with TMPunk
my little sister listens to Taylor Swift and it's kewl for girly stuff. Apparently shes really good, shes been #1 for like over 3 weeks or sumthing like that...
But other than hearing that from my sister I don't listen to any country sorry lol.

I miss having CMT.
I rarely find new good country songs to download (oops...I mean...um....buy). I always got my songs from the Chevy Top 20 but then the landlord decided to cut our cable to like 13 channels. CMT is not one of them.

I think TM likes Taylor Swift more than I do. It's adorable. I do agree, though, that she's very talented.

I will occasionally listen to country-pop. I am not afraid to admit that I like a song or two from the following: Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Lonestar, Carrie Underwood, and Toby Keith (for him, I'm thinking of the song "I Love This Bar").

In all honesty, the only artists that I am familiar with that would be considered old country are Waylon Jennings and Patsy Kline. I would add Diamond Rio and Johnny Rodriguez to this list, but they aren't really all that old. However, I definitely don't think that country is crap. I used to, but I now respectfully tolerate it if I don't outright enjoy it.

Country is OK, but it has a bad rep. It is considered uncool, but I don't mind it. I'm a fan of music with lots of good guitar riffs, and my favourite is Brad Paisley, who released a new album recently, and it was great. Actually, he's coming to my town and not too long. I should go to that. But anyway, country is not as bad as people seem to think. I don't like the croony, stupid songs by some artists, but the more fast paced and comedic songs are good. I agree that Rascall Flatts and Carrie Underwood are extremely annoying. Carrie was good on American Idol, then I just hated her. Rascall Flatts... how the hell did that guy get popular?

I'm not country's biggest fan, but I'm an overall music fan so I do listen to Country from time to time. Rascal Flatts is a nice country group, most of their songs are really good. Taylor Swift is also another good country singer her voice is just perfect. I'm not really sure why no one really likes country, but its not as bad as everyone thinks it is.

"Don't think I don't think about it" by that guy from Hooty and the blow fish is a good country song as well.

I like some of the old and some of the new country.

Sometimes I feel like playing some Alan Jackson or George Straight. Sometimes I'm in a mood for Taylor Swift or Brad Paisley. To me both are good. Might be because I'm young who knows but my dad is 41 and likes the stuff and the old stuff also.

How is George Strait "new age?" He's been around for ages, and although I'm from NYC and Country aint exactly our cup of tea... he's my favorite Country Singer. I think he's awesome, but I like his older stuff as opposed to most of his newer albums. Though, "Run" is my favorite of his newer songs.

no see when I said George Strait I was referring to me sometimes listing to the old country.

re-read it lol. I said I like both old and new country. Alan Jackson and George Strait(old school country) and sometimes Taylor Swift and Brad Paisley(new school country)

I have just started to listen to more and more country music. While I don't really like the old school country(probably because my grandfather always listened to Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty, George Jones, ect). But I really like some of the new stuff. Carrie Underwood, Brad Paisley, Taylor Swift, and Kellie Pickler all have songs that I like.

But the one country duo that I cannot get enough of is Sugarland :) While they are more of a country duo singing pop songs, they still are amazing. So many great songs and very uplifting stuff. I have Settlin' & Everyday American played on repeat right now. Jennifer Nettles is an amazing vocalists, and writes all her own songs which is amazing. I'm just saw in love with them and their songs right now! Plus they did a live duet with Beyonce once which is amazing :)

Sugerland is pretty cool. I love the song Stay. Its really really good IMO.

Also all the artist you named you like are awesome. Taylor and Kellie as I said in the Taylor thread are touring together. Along with them is a group called Gloriana. I love there debut single Wild At Heart.

its amazing.
