Cop Out

I just saw this film tonight for the first time on cable and I have to say it was a pretty good film. Surely was entertaining comedy and action wise, and the combination of Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan is fairly good. I dono why this film failed at the box office and received negative reviews, but it certainly was a entertaining movie. Morgan was funny and Willis was a badass as usual in the film. Now this film is no Lethal Weapon, Bad Boys or Rush Hour, not even 48 Hours or Another 48 Hours, but this film is pretty good and dono why alot of people dislike it. Any other thoughts?

That's like saying just because there are movies like Halloween and Friday the 13th there should be no more slasher movies because they may not be quiet as good. Give me a break, Cop Out may have been a let down but it was still funny. Not every movie will be a hit, but zany buddy cop movies that pit guys like Mel Gibson and Danny Glover or Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan will always draw a decent crowd because it is funny to see two guys who don't belong together actually put together.

The plot of Grown Ups was basically any movie involving a bunch of buddies fucking around, i.e. the Broken Lizard Comedy Troop. There are very few films coming out in American cinema that are truly original anymore and all movies listed in this thread fall under that category, Red being the most original but only because it used elder action stars instead of the typical young ones. I guess The Expendables would suffice as a film along the same lines as Red with the aging action stars but it wasn't nearly as funny.

I thought every scene with Sean William Scott was absolutely golden. If the entire movie revolved around his character then this would have ended up being a comedy classic, no doubt.

But, the movie was basically nothing more than a homage to 80's cop buddy movies, and as that I guess it succeeded somewhat. I mean, what kind of expectations can you really have for a movie like that? Not much.

Tracy Morgan had some good moments, but a lot of his jokes fell flat. Bruce Willis was a more boring version of Bruce Willis. And the main villain was lame as hell. Regardless, some of the dialogue was pretty witty, and like I said... SWS was just tremendous. If it weren't for him, I probably would have hated the movie, but the movie's that much more enjoyable because of his character.

Also, let me say I am a HUGE Kevin Smith fan, but this didn't feel like a Kevin Smith film at all. I hope he doesn't direct something he didn't write ever again. I would actually prefer him letting other people direct some of his scripts, rather than him directing other people's scripts. The guy is a brilliant writer, and that's what he should dedicate his professional life to more than anything.

If you think Cop Out was Kevin Smiths worst film then you have clearly never seen either Jersey Girl or Zach and Miri Make a Porno. Both of those films were complete clusterfucks from beginning to end that were just sad to watch. Cop Out is not Smiths worst film, SWS alone makes it better then Zach and Miri and Jersey Girl.

Kevin Smith's worst film, and gee-whizz he's done some horrible ones. I'm struggling to remember anything from it and I saw it about a month ago. Tracy Morgan is wasted in it, Bruce Willis is coasting along being fucking awful, umm, what else? Sean William Scott is the best thing in it, but surely something had to be. He's the best thing in it because its a load of shit. Still, Red State looks like it'll be worse.

I enjoyed the Cop Out movie. Grant it I saw it back when it first came out in theatres and haven't seen it since, but I thought it was a solid movie. It had a good chunk of laughs and it seemed like Bruce and Tracy worked well together. Now I won't claim to be a movie expert as it is pretty easy to please me and I usually enjoy whatever movie I sit through. I do agree with jmt though, Seann William Scott's character was pure gold. He was hilarious and the real gem of the movie. Any time he was on the screen you knew you were gonna see some good comedy. He probably saved the movie now that I think back, but like I said I haven't seen it since it came out so a rewatch would be necessary.

In Smiths defense, this was the first film he's ever directed that he didn't write, and he had to take a huge hit in the budget to get in made, also was forced to change the title, it was originally suppose to be called "A Couple Of Dicks", but the studio was afraid nobody would go see a movie with such a "risque title"

Also Wahlberg and Ferrel were originally suppose to play the leads, but didn't want to take a huge paycut so they left the project and went elsewhere to make their own buddy cop comedy, The Other Guys, which was a far better movie

Lol a Couple of Dicks was the better title. Also lol audience be afraid of a risque title? Man back in the 1960s they had titles like this all the time.

I was very impartial to it. I didn't like it, but I didn't hate it either. I mean, it was funny at times. But there were a lot of times where the jokes just seemed forced and unoriginal. I also didn't like that the plot resolved around something like a baseball card. Yeah, I know Willis needed it so he could pay for his daughter's wedding, but it just seems silly to have it be the focal point of the movie. However, I do think both Willis and Morgan were very good in this movie. Morgan was comedy gold, and Willis even helped out Morgan at points by giving Morgan a "What the fuck?" type of glare. The acting was good, the comedy was alright, but the overall plot was pretty bad. If I had to rate it, I'd give it a 6/10.
