CM Punk: The King of the Promo

I think CM Punk has got to be one of the greatest if not, the best at cutting a promo I have ever seen. This guy is so amazing and so full of new ideas not to mention his charisma.

In the past there has been some great wrestlers that have been able to cut great promos like the rock, edge, stone cold, ric flair, roddy piper etc....

But, I think CM Punk is a good shout at having the number 1 spot, even above all these past greats.

what does everyone else think???

deffinatly not the greatest of all time id rate piper, foley, roberts, flair, harley race and many others above him. Im a huge punk fan but to say he is the greatest promo guy of all time, not so sure about that one. Heck id go as far to say he probably isnt even the best today, what sets him apart though is that he has been given free reign over what he says on shows...many wrestlers in the WWE have not got that so we cant really say who is the best. On a ESPN podcast that punk did he did say that Miz and Cena are better than him on the microphone and i guess in a way they are. Punk is great, dont get me wrong but he is deffinatly not the best ever on the mic and until all WWE wrestlers can say what they want instead of just reading scripts we wont be able to say who is the best.

Hes not the best every but he is one of the greatest. Its funny when people talk about the best promo giver ever they hardly mention Triple H. I think his promos were great when he used to wrestle and he's still amazing on the mic after all those years.

Punk is great, no doubt. He's definitely one of the best at cutting a promo on the current WWE roster. But better than Flair, Rhodes, Hogan? No, don't think so. When these guys cut a promo, emotion was displayed. CM Punk is usually only good because he has the balls to say the things others won't, can't, and aren't given the time to say. I love to hear CM Punk, but he isn't exactly on par with other guys like Hogan or Flair, or even Triple H. He just has a different impact or delivery then these other guys did. Doesn't mean I don't love Punk's promo cutting ability, I just think others have been better.

CM Punk's definitely there.. the King.. whether it's Promos or wrestling.. undoubtedly..

However.. after reading Mark Madden's articles.. and as an avid fan of WWE for so long.. I can't help but agreeing what Mark had said and also worried that the company will really once again ruined another star if what Mark said were to happen..

It's not the first time such things happen and I had always doubted WWE's way of developing starts which is seriously over-bias towards John Cena..

CM Punk IS the star WWE needs.. and if WWE continues to do their ways of "ruining talents".. it will only do bad for the company and the industry..

I personally hope CM Punks will get what he deserves.. He is undoubtedly one of the best we are waiting for IN YEARS!!!

I will agree that CM Punk is awesome at cutting promos. The best Ever? Possibly. The best now? I think so. Even if people can argue that he is not the best ever, I'm sure that it would be hard to argue that he is not the best at this time. I can't really think of anyone that comes close to cutting promos like Punk in the current roster.

Cm punk is def not the greatest of all time. But very very good given his limited mic time until recent.he is great though in the sense that he has always brought real topics in his promos, like jeff hardys feud.and even tonight on raw, there was a few times he had HHH a little lost for words for real.and thats what i love about promos and what makes great ones, when the other person is genuinely lost.

Not even close. While I enjoy Punk's lucid and supremely intelligible promos, to say he is even in the league of a Ric Flair or Dusty Rhodes is blasphemous. The men of that era are cut of a different cloth. Their promos had a spontaneity and a flavour that has yet to be duplicated by any generation.

I'd agree that Punk is, without question, one of the best in the business right now, he has yet to reach the level of John Cena or Triple H.
If I had to rate the all time greatest on the stick, it'd be as follows:

1.) Ric Flair
2.) Dusty Rhodes
3.) Roddy Piper
4.) The Rock
5.) Randy Savage
6.) "Superstar" Billy Grahmn
7.) "Stone Cold" Steve Austin
8.) Triple H
9.) Hulk Hogan
10.) Chris Jericho

the problem i have is that sure punk is great on the mic but he is getting alot more free reign over what he says than the majority of the roster...who knows what could happen if they gave free reign to everybody...santino might end up cutting promos like harley race. But its the fact that punk is being allowed to say what he wants whilst other are not so its difficult to say that he is the best at this time.

he is pretty good but jericho and rock were better,i think hes better than stone cold though, the funny thing about him is that he doesnt need catchphrases like other guys hes that good.
Punk v jericho would be the best since michaels/jericho if it were to happen when jericho comes back.face punk v heel jericho.
i think the miz, ziggler,r truth are the best of the rest. cena and orton are good too but there too stale, repeat themselves every week.on a side note orton needs to turn heel but theres not 1 other face on smackdown so i guess that wont happen

Yeah I think you are right. Punk had to break kayfabe. I think he is getting elevated by people because of the shock value of what he is saying.

He was given a great opportunity. I'm sure their were a lot of wrestlers wishing they had a chance to do that. To his credit he ran with it and did a great job. He is very good at cutting promos. But I dont think he is anywhere near being the best promo guy of all time.

I believe that Punk is definitely one of the best around TODAY... not necessarily of all time...

BUT, the one thing he has going for him that most don't and didn't: he is one of the best of all time as an ALL-AROUND wrestler AND mic performer. Most the time you see someone that is great at one or the other... but he is very good at both, really setting him apart from the pack.

Punk is very good but overrated by his fans. The part where he dropped the mic and said "pipe bomb" was really goofy. He really is a nerd. He comes across, like I've said a million times, like those little goth/emo/indy rock kids who sit outside music stores and hot topic and talk about how artistic they are.

The thing is, Punk says things that makes IWC people grow a big rubbery one.

cm punk IS 1 of the best at cutting promos. hes up there with flair, rock and jericho. Anyways Cm punk is the future and its pretty obvious...

Now I agree with everyone's choices in regards to some of the best ever, but one name I have yet to see mentioned that definitely is in this category is Jake "The Snake" Roberts. The way he spoke, articulated, and delivered is something that not only stood out, but is completely unique to what anyone else had, or in my opinion, has even been able to do since then. It is more than just the message, the delivery is just as important.

Well I do agree that punk is great on the mic. I would have to say that his use of honesty has helped him a lot. Saying things that only the IWC know about and mentioning things that are supposed to be "taboo" in the WWE has made his promos while great, appear even better. He has a lot of the Bret Hart effect in which Hart was never that great on the mic IMO but when him and HBK's feud started to spill out on tv his promos started to sound way better.....

Greatest mic worker of all time? No. No, no, no. Not even close. Unfortunately, Punk hasn't been given the opportunity to prove himself worthy of that title. Hell, even if he's given that chance to prove himself, I don't know if he's that talented.

Steve Austin, The Rock, Ric Flair, Bobby Heenan, Chris Jericho, Roddy Piper... I could probably come up with many more, but I'll spare you guys. He just doesn't register on that level.

Best mic worker today? Yes. He's better than Orton, Cena, Del Rio, Ziggler, Truth... you name 'em, he's better. However, to say he's the best of all time is a bit insane.

You sir, dont have a clue as to what you are saying.

I really wish that there was just 1 CM punk thread, and everything went into there so the love fest would be contained to one spot.. Seriously now. The guy does what.. 4 promo's where they let him say what he wants (supposedly) and he's now a god?
Punk is good, and very comfortable on the mic. Yes. The best ever? Not a flippin chance. Anyone who thinks so, must be new to WWE.

I'll say the same thing I just did in the thread about Punk being better than Chris Jericho... He needs more time. A few spots of greatness and one true fantastic month does not make him anywhere NEAR the greatest of all time. This isn't his first time cutting good promos, but it is the first time he's done them and everyone paid attention. Before he hit the Straight Edge Society, I don't even think he was at a great level when it comes to promo cutting either. He was certainly good, but not excellent. Now, he knows how to captivate on an audience, as well as the current trends in the industry. He knows half the fans are going to cheer for a ambigious reference to real-life drama, so he'll cut it. He knows what to say, when to say it. I'll give him that...

Just like I said in the other thread, let's have this conversation in 5-8 years. When Punk has been cutting the best promos in the WWE on a consistant basis for several years without missing a beat, then he can hold a candle to Chris Jericho. Then he can go toe-to-toe with Kurt Angle and Eddie Guerrero. And maybe...just maybe...he'll be able to go one-on-one with the Great One.

I agree. His promos had great delivery but no one can deny the fact that he basically gives the IWC a hand job by reinforcing all of their beliefs everytime. Maybe that's why people on here love him so much. I like Punk, I like him a lot. However, I'm able to seperate my fanhood from reality.

Was just about to post pretty much the exact same thing! Roberts was cold, calculated and to the point on the mic. Aside from the "trust me" thing he never relied on catchphrases, he just stood in front of the camera, spoke his mind and was 100% himself.

Also I see alot of people rating Flair on the stick. Am I the only one who used to find him a bore ? He never changed from the moment he started in the 1800's right up to today. "To be the man, you gotta beat the man", "Limousine ridin, jet flyin, wheeli........ AH SHUT THE HELL UP!!!!!!

As for Punk, yeah without doubt he's the best of the current Gen, but of all time? Not a chance!

Punk is without a doubt the best on the mic at the moment. But ever? Not even close at the moment. Flair and Piper etc are all in a different league than Punk. But Punk has been very limited until now on the mic and hasn't really had many chances to prove just how good he is. But the times he hasn't been limited on the mic he's made the most of it. In my opinion if he keeps cutting promos like he has been lately I can see him being up there with the best. He has another 10+ years to prove to us that he can hang with the big boys.

Even before he broke kayfabe, when he was still the leader of the straight edge society, he cut some of the best promo's in the WWE. Hell, even in ROH and the indies he always was one of the best promo's of the night. I'm not saying he's the best ever at the promo (IMO jake roberts is) but i am saying that he's been doing great promo's for years. The only reason he's getting recognition for it now is because what he's saying.

Not even in the top 10. Punk is good, but he's not even close to being the "King of the Promo", at least not yet.

He gave the one, fantastic Promo, and now everyone is saying he's the greatest of all time. To be the greatest of all time you need to do great things over a period of time, not just for a few months. Now, I've always been a Punk fan, and I'm so glad he's now the "Top Guy"; but to be honest, this rivalry he's having with Cena, has only made me more of a Cena fan.

When ever the two of them are in the Ring, cutting a Promo, hell it's gold. The one thing I always say to myself after they're done though is, "Nobody can work the crowd, like John Cena". Punk is good, but a guy like Cena is great.

Punk is also starting to get repetitive. I know it only been a month, and I do think he'll start to freshen it up, so I'm not righting him off just yet. Punk and HHH at the beginning of Raw was awesome; but then Punk when down the same road he did with Vince, and made fun of Stephanie. HHH pointed out later in the show, that people have been going after Steph for years, and Punk will have to do better than that, and I totally agree. This whole making fun of the McMahon's is fine for now, but if he want's to keep the analogy of the mic being a "Pipe Bomb" he's going to have to get more creative.

Like I said, Punk is good, but "King of Promo" not even in the Top 10. Maybe one day, but right now the top 10 are:

1.Austin
2.Jake "the Snake"
3.Piper
4.Rock
5.Jericho
6.Hogan
7.Cena
8.Flair
9.Bobby "The Brain"
10.HHH

I think Punk is really good, definitely. But maybe it's just me, but I'm starting to find him tiresome already. Maybe it's because his speeches last night, while eloquent, boiled down to not much more than a spoiled child whining. Perhaps that was the point, but I don't think I'm going to remain interested if this keeps on a regular basis.
