Clash of the Champions

Pre-Show Stalwart
Does anyone miss this show? I always liked the concept. Wasn't it considered a ppv that they aired on tbs or just a super show? Would this work today and why doesn't WWE do something like this today with all the watered down ppv's. Offer a ppv that they hype for a month and half and have it for free.

WWE has that, kind of, in Saturday Night's Main Event. Clash was basically held every couple of months on TBS. I remember as a kid watching those events. I remember one in particular, Sting vs. Flair was the ME. It was great. I wish WWE would do the SNME more often.

Yeah but clash always had a special feel about which is lacking in the saturday night main event. It just reminds me of another show and can't even name a match that has taken place at recent snme.

I have been thinking about this myself recently. I think it would be a good idea and have the perfect way to do it: THE NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS PPV. I would make TNOC over the air for one year, really hype t and see what the ratings are.

COTC was indeed a pay per view quality supershow. There were no jobbers or teeny matches. The reason it went away is because Eric Bischoff expanded to monthly pay per views.

Having those monthly PPV's, plus Nitro, plus Thunder, and whatever other show WCW was running at the time, meant that COTC would have just been more to write.

WCW was mismanaged and disorganized enough without throwing more into the mix.

yes that was wcw we are talking about wwe. They could have a Clash of the Champions night, featuring a war games main event and have it live on usa or whatever they wanted. It will never happen but would be a great mark out moment. Vince loves to get nostalgic with ecw just never wcw.

Clash of the Champions would never work now, because the theme of it was to see the biggest stars wrestling together for free. We see that 4 days, 5 shows, every week. Every week we're treated to Legacy vs. Batista and Cena. We see Edge vs. Undertaker. We see Rey vs. Kane. Or whatever it is.

Clash of the Champions would be pointless because wrestling tv shows no longer follow the format of star vs. jobber.

slyfox is completely right. with the shows the way they are now, the concept isnt as hot. it works for ufc for their fight nights, but thats a legit sport. wwe could promote it as a ppv on free tv, but since vince is all about the buyrates, why would he sacrifice one ppv for free tv, even if he thought he could make up most of the difference with advertising revenue? the answer is it doesn't matter, because he's not gonna think about doing it, period. furthermore the last thing wwe needs is another show added every couple months as it is completely overexposed. all it needs are raw and sd! as respective brands. superstars and ecw are really just too extraneous. we've seen the raw recap if we watch all four shows so many times by the next raw we've already burnt out on the storyling (just an example, can be said for any show.)

I had been thinking about this recently too, and the only reason Clash worked back in the day was because they didnt have a PPV coming up every month or a prime-time tv show every week, and so it gave them an event with a big-time feel to have some feuds build-up in-between PPVs. The only way it could work now is if they were to cut back on the number of PPVs a year and I just dont see it happening. I think part of the reason that SNME did so poorly in its return was because there really wasn't anything special about it compared to Raw or Smackdown. It was just another show tossed in the line-up, and I have a feeling that is how COTC would be used if it were to return. So as long as some people are willing to pay for 14 PPVs a year they aren't going to cut some out anytime soon, or give people a show for free that they can get people to spend $30 bucks on.

What Slyfox said. Seriously...the reason Clash worked was because there were only a few major PPV's a year from the WCW/NWA. The Clash of Champions was a way to showcase superstar talent to a national audience. As far as I'm concerned, they're the forefathers of Prime Time wrestling. And no, no...Saturday Night's Main Event was on in SNL's timeslot, so it wasn't a prime time event. Clash was on at 8:05...on the dot. With the Horsemen, Sting, Luger, Road Warriors, Midnight Express, Rock 'n Roll Express, and so on. It was great and I miss those days.
