Charity Shop Challenges

Dowdsy McDowds

This is a bit of an 'on-again-off-again' deal, but when I was at college my class mates and I would pass the time in between classes by rummaging around charity shops rather aimlessly.

To provide some structure to this procrastinating activity, we began to set each other challenges; find a DVD with Cher or Madonna then give it to someone, who would then need to come up with a new challenge etc.

Another friend and I had a Simpsons challenge, where within 3 months we had to find as many 'special' DVDs as opposed to the seasoned DVDs. I technically think I won that as he had enlisted his brother in Glasgow to 'assist' him with the challenge without me knowing, the bastard.

After revisiting the show Hornblower (guilty pleasure) I decided I needed to see Sean Bean being a dick to Frenchmen, so my new challenge is to find the entire Sharpe collection using only charity shops and re-sale shops.

Is this bizarre activity mine alone or has anyone else done something like this?

Any good stories of amazing finds are welcome too.

I'm currently working in British Heart Foundation and before that, worked in Oxfam. Back in Oxfam, we came across a book that was about 170 years old, not sure on how much it was worth.

The only other interesting thing that we found was one of the first printed copies of "Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone", that was nice.

I've got a few bargains myself, but I mostly buy CD's/DVD's, rarely clothes.

Just picked up "One Night Stand: Extreme Rules 2007" from the BHF I'm working at for 99p. Sitting down to watch it, not a great match line-up though.

Good job! I picked up 7 Sharpe DVDs between 2 shops on Thursday. The only 3 episodes I'm missing are the most recent ones, which is a lot less frustrating than not having the first 3.

Unfortunately, I found Deadliest Warrior on Netflix so that has my attention at the moment.

You must have seen some recurring titles in the shops you worked at I'm guessing? I saw about 5 copies of Cloverfield on Thursday which really surprised me. The best one-off bargain I found was finding LA Takedown, Michael Mann's TV movie fore-runner to Heat, in a charity shop in a village with a population of only a couple of hundred.
