Call me a sexist if you want....

....but I don't want to hear a woman on commentary during an entire pro wrestling show. I'm sorry.

I like Renee Young. She is the best backstage interviewer they've had in a very long time. She is great on the pre-show panels. She is great on the WWE Rewinds and Countdowns. But having her on commentary is too much.

I feel the same way about women doing commentary during legit sports, there is a woman play-by-play announcer who does college football on ESPN and I turn the game off if I hear it.

Should it "matter" if a woman or a man is doing commentary? Intellectually, no. But realistically, it does. To me. The cutesy high pitched voice coming from a petite blonde woman while two guys are "fighting" is out of place.

I actually find Renee Young's commentary on NXT to be quite refreshing. Sometimes I prefer her commentary above the trio we hear every Monday night. Raw gets to be too much when I have to listen to JBL, King, and Cole argue some nonsense but at least Renee actually puts over the talent in the ring and then commentates about the match even if she has to tell a story about the wrestler in the ring. I do not watch Superstars so I can't speak for her commentary for that show but when it comes to NXT her commentary is fairly top notch.

Wow. So just because she has nothing dangling between her legs, she can't talk about sports? Does it also bother you that she isn't in a kitchen all day?

You need to really reevaluate your views on this. This is absolutely not acceptable. Don't look at Young as a "cutsy" blonde. Look at her as a human being.

If you were truly sorry, you wouldn't have this reprehensible view.

This is no different than the people who have racist or homophobic views. In the end, it's all discrimination and you are adding to it.

My only issue with her isn't even her fault.
It seems like when she tries to say something they tend to talk over her and at times they seem to have their own conversation as if she isn't even there.

If she had a deeper, manlier voice would it be less of an issue for you? What if she was fat, ugly and not blonde? Would you be more comfortable with Kharma doing commentary than Renee Young?

You know what's out of place? Idiotic views like the ones you expressed here. That's out of place anywhere in society.

Renee Young at least i happen to find her a great alternative! She adds value, and her commentary skills are very good.. Mark my words OP the day is coming when we have a Lead Female Commentator on either Raw or smackdown.. Wonder if you will turn the WWE off then

It's totally sexist... but I feel the same way. It's beyond my control, when I hear a woman talking during a sporting event it irks me. I'm not saying that they shouldn't have those jobs or anything, but I'm probably not going to watch if a woman is commentating.

If you had a daughter, would you tell her that she can do anything she wants when she grows up, except talk about sports because only men can do that?

How dare you say it's beyond your control. This is 100% under your control. In fact, you are trying to blame women by saying it's beyond your control. Is it not your DECISION to be annoyed by them?

You are contributing to discrimination. You are no better than a racist. You are no better than a homophobe. You are a sexist.

Uh, no? Pretty sure I've already covered that with:

I'm not saying that they shouldn't have those jobs or anything ,but I'm probably not going to watch if a woman is commentating.

I'm just saying that, aesthetically, I dislike hearing a woman do commentary during a sporting event. And I have daughters. Two of them.

How dare you say it's beyond your control. This is 100% under your control. In fact, you are trying to blame women by saying it's beyond your control. Is it not your DECISION to be annoyed by them?

Calm down there, warrior. Let me try to use some examples here.

I totally believe that homosexuals should be given every right that heterosexual people have. Their sexual preferences should have no effect on their civil rights. However, when I see two dudes kissing or whatever, it grosses me out. That's just not what I'm into.

African Americans deserve every right they've obtained and should suffer no discrimination based on the color of their skin. However, when I'm surfing porn and come upon a video with a giant black man's penis (poor choice of words, I know,) I turn the video off. It's not what I'm looking for.

Women should also have every right that their male counterparts have. No brainer. However, when I watch wrestling, football, or basketball, I don't want to hear a woman's voice. It just sounds out of place for what I'm watching.

Nowhere here am I claiming that any of these groups are inferior to any others in any way. I'm not saying that there should be any restrictions to their lives based on their ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, etc. I'm strictly speaking on my own personal preferences.

You are contributing to discrimination. You are no better than a racist. You are no better than a homophobe. You are a sexist.

Maybe I am. But unless you can say that you've never discriminated against anyone in any form or fashion, you're a hypocrite.

I would guess most people would agree. It's very hard for a girl on commentary to come off as one of the gang or just one of the guys but that's what they have to do for it to seem natural. Interviewers don't have to worry about that so that's never a problem in pro sports.

Not just wrestling, female commentary is quite bitter-sweet in other sports as well. While they can be a nice chance after every 10 years or so (especially if they're hot), I feel males are simply more suited for the job of commentary, just like women are better suited for the job of nurses. Male voices are more prominent, more balanced, less sharp, more reactionic, and simply create the mood better.

It's amazing how people jumped down your throat for this... Do you guys know why Hurricanes with female names kill more people? It's because Hurricane Katrina doesn't sound as threatening as Hurricane Charles. That is fact. & this applies to women as well. They tend to stay put when told to leave if it's a female name. Women are seen as the weaker species for a reason, it's because they are. But hey I'll eat my words if you could find me a female announcer as good as Jim Ross or Al Michaels.

I don't know if it's sexist of not, I quite sure some women do feel the same way. I have nothing against Renee Young. I like looking at her, I like hearing her speak. I mean, she has a nice voice, but when she's on the commentary table doing "play-by-play" commentary, it just doesn't work for me, it distracted me from the show -- I find myself skipping ahead more often if I'm able to, or eat more tidbits. I don't know why that is and can't attribute it to one single thing... maybe it's her style of commentary, or because her chirpy voice is unsuitable for the announcer's table .

Men and women ARE different. It doesn't take a sexist to recognize that.

Oh yeah, and you know who else shouldn't be on TV? The blacks. And the gays. STOP THEM POLLUTING MY AIRWAVES!!!

Oh wait, it's 2014 not 1814. Sorry, some of the attitudes here confused me.

It doesn't matter if she's a woman or not, what seems to be the worst thing about this thread is everyone is saying 'she's really good at her job, I just don't want to see a woman doing it.' If she's better than most male wrestling commentators, which she is, because most wrestling commentators are terrible, then she deserves to be on TV. If you choose not to watch that, a) you need to take a long look in the mirror and b) you are the one with the problem.

Ya I don't think people preferring a male voice in a wrestling commentator is enough to get many people worked up. I didn't read anybody say she's a really good commentator but I don't like her cause shes a woman so thats a strawman. She can't control having a womans voice but that's life, most men can't be commentators either cause they don't have the right voice.

I don't care about the gender of the commentary as long as they don't distract from the action in the ring too much. Having a female commentator can and a different perspective. Imagine a female commentator lusting over male wrestlers like Jerry Lawler over the Divas in the past.

Oh did I awaken your closet homosexual tendencies with that?

Congrats. You win the "knight-in-shining armor" award.

It was a close call, but you win by a hair with your absurd comparison to blacks and gays and insinuating that I "don't want them on TV". The person who went to the old standby of "you probably think she should stay in the kitchen" came in a close second.

I don't have a "problem" because I don't like hearing a female voice during pro wrestling matches. It's called "taste". Take it or leave it, thanks for contributing to the thread.

To generalise all women's voices as being the same is a swooping massive generalisation that's completely ridiculous. There are women that have deeper voices than Todd Grisham, for example.

If someone said 'it's just taste, but I don't like to see black wrestlers in the ring' that's exactly the same. You invited people to call you a sexist, and they have, now you're trying to defend yourself, but people will call a spade a spade. If you say something sexist, that makes you a sexist.

I'd rather have an educated woman on commentary than an utter tool of a man on commentary. Renee is smart, articulate, she does her research, she's a good improviser, she's learning very quickly about how to tell a story and, most importantly, she doesn't take it so goddamn seriously.

When JBL is shouting at Michael Cole about conspiracies and going "WAH WAH WAH!" like a complete fucknut with the emotional maturity of a 13 year old, I find myself craving for something more tolerable, specifically the dulcet tones of Renee Young.

It's okay to show emotion on commentary when there's something worth showing emotion over. Shouting at your commentary partner because he mentioned that Kane helped Seth Rollins win Money in the Bank, which he clearly did, is not one of those instances.

Now, I'm gonna wait for what should be a cracking post by Sally in this thread...

Taste?

If you feel any less bad about generalising women than you would about generalising gay people or black people, then you're pretty damn sexist.

Let me ask you something. Imagine you're watching some kind of sport. There's a commentator who's voice is a little higher and lighter than average, but he's doing a great job, and you're enjoying his commentary. Then it turns out to be a woman. Do you immediately change your mind about the commentator doing a good job?

Or how about this, you're watching a wrestling show where a deep-voiced woman is commentating, so you turn it off. You later find out that the commentator was actually a man. Do you give him another chance because he's a man?

Actually, I don't know why I'm asking. You probably won't answer honestly.

I said "call me a sexist IF YOU WANT...", meaning that I knew there are people who would automatically go that route when they hear someone say that they don't want to hear a woman on commentary.

Those people are incorrect in this scenario. You are diminishing TRUE "sexism" if you think I am a sexist for not wanting to hear a squeaky female voice during a wrestling match.

As for the "not all female voices are the same" thing, that's fine, when the woman you reference who has a deeper voice than Todd Grisham is doing commentary, I'll re-visit this topic.

Woah there, females being officials at the football. Get back in the kitchen, toots!

I'm happy to admit I'm sexist. However when it comes to wrestling, specifically WWE, we've got Jerry Lawler & JBL on every week. It isn't a real sport and the people they use now are so lifeless that I'll gladly welcome change. Even if that change has a vagina.

Now, I'm gonna wait for what should be a cracking post by Sally in this thread...

Yeah, and if I then respond to her post, I'll be getting private messages from guys on here telling me to not "pick on" a woman. It's happened before, and it's pathetic.

That scenario doesn't make any sense. A deep-voiced woman is doing commentary, then I find out it was actually a man? Why would I have thought it was a woman from the get-go?

There are women that have deeper voices than Todd Grisham, for example.

On a totally separate note, Todd Grisham is my favorite commentator ever since I started watching WWE wrestling again.

lol, this thread is going downhill real fast...

She is the best backstage interviewer they've had in a very long time

Yeah, she says "Ladies and gentlemen, my guest at this time, _____" better than anyone...

You are contributing to discrimination. You are no better than a racist. You are no better than a homophobe. You are a sexist.

This is pure nonsense. This PC "everyone has to like everyone" poppycock is out of control. I enjoy women in my bed and men in my announcer's booth. You know what that makes me? A human with those preferences.

I have black friends, gay friends, white friends, female friends, Asian friends...and not wanting to hear them on TV doesn't make me a "phobe" for their respective cultures. They have a right to enjoy life and I, as someone not in a minority, have that same right.

If you tell me a woman is qualified to do an announcing job, I say hire her. And, more than likely, I will watch another game. It is my preference, it hurts no one and is none of your business. I'm not attracted to very dark women, so am I racist? I am also not attracted to pale white women...what does that make me now?

Get over yourselves! Having preferences does not necessarily make you a bigot, racist or whatever other nonsense "therockiswwf" is spewing.

I am all for equal rights. But I am less likely to support them when close-minded fools like you are speaking for them. If you want equality for all, good for you. I wish you well. If you want to talk about people's rights, start considering the rights of those you are targeting.

It's just personal preferance. Everyone has a commentator that they prefer, and a voice they enjoy hearing at the announcers desk. Some commentators just aren't as entertaining to me at others. For example, I loved JR, King, Joey Styles and Paul Heyman, I enjoy Mike Tenay and Taz in TNA, but I was never a fan of Tony Schiavone, Mike Adamle, Michael Cole and especially not Todd Grisham. I used to enjoy hearing JBL but he's starting to become irritating these days.

However knowledgable a person is, if I don't enjoy hearing their voice and it takes away from my enjoyment of the product then I will turn the sound off.

The one thing I will say is that I enjoy having an actual wrestler as the colour commentator alongside the Play by Play guy, as they often have had experience of being in the ring with the competitors in the ring. At the end of the day its personal preferance. People have their own favourites, and no doubt Renee Young is a favourite of some people. That doesnt make anyone sexist. Just as some people didnt like Booker T's style of commentary....they aren't racist. They just don't like his voice while they are watching wrestling.
