Bull Run of Pamplona

YOU RULED THE WORLD LONG ENOUGH !!!
The Running of the Bulls, spectacular or disgraceful ?
The annual Running of the Bulls is a event that takes place in the Spanish city Pamplona.
Every year dozens of bulls are let loose on the streets of Pamplona and are sent down a certain course which leads into the stadium of the city in which the bulls are later killed.

Injured and Fatalities
On their way through the streets of Pamplona the bulls are chasing not only locals but also tourists who participate as runners.
Often enough people are heavily injured by the enraged bulls, and so far 15 fatalities have been confirmed.
In this year´s run one man died and around 100 other were injured so far.

ProtestThe run is a huge event in Spain and is televised by multiple TV channels.
But not everybody is ok with the event, multiple animal right activists like PETA have stated that the event is savage and a disgrace. And have performed several protests like the “Run of the Nude” in 2007.

My opinion
And so do I, I think it´s a shame that so many innocent animals have to die because of such an event.
I can understand that it´s a tradition and that it´s been done for years. And I have to say that I´m not a vegetarian but this event is beyond cruel.
First the animals have to run through the streets of the city and being surrounded and yelled at by several people that think it´s fun but they are also killed later on.

What do you think ?
But what do you think ? Do you think the tradition should be carried on ? Or do you think it´s a serious case of unnecessary violence against animals ?

I never understood why people want to run with the bulls just to get that out of the way. I never knew the bulls were killed afterwards and I do consider it somewhat cruel. If the bull isn't injured, I don't see any reason to kill it. As long as there are crazy people out there and thousands flock to see it, The Running of the Bulls will still happen.

This it tough really. On one hand I've always been influenced by men like Ernest Hemingway and his glorification of the running of the bulls. The Sun Also Rises is one of my favorite novels. But, on the other hand, it's both cruel to the animals as well an extremely dangerous and downright stupid and destructive event every year. How many people have died because of such an insanely stupid reason as this?

I'm torn here. I can't say whether to keep it, or chuck it. But, it seems a bit outdated now. I thought the world had evolved past such barbarous games as these. The rest of the world can get their kicks playing Halo, why can't you Spain?

Hemingway somewhat was a fan of this event, he wrote two books about it The Sun also rises and Death in the Afternoon.

In the latter he states, I quote : "anything capable of arousing passion in its favor will surely raise as much passion against it."

But in Death in the Afternoon he described more the traditions and the history of the event rather than the controversy.

As much as I hate to support something like PETA, it is pretty stupid, dangerous and unfair on the bulls. On the one hand, if you voulanteer to do something like that, it's your own fault though, so that argument can probably be discounted. If they're injuring random people, which it doesn't appear is the case, then it should be stopped. But, tbh, as a general rule of thumb I think that, unless you're killing the animal for food or some kind of testing i.e. medicine, make-up, whatever - then it's ok - but if the killing is merely as a source of entertainment it's going a bit too far and crosses over to being unessecary and barbaric.

Its reported on sportscenter so it is going to fit here slightly more as an esoteric sport rather than one of those mainstream ones.

Personally I find nothing actually that wrong with the running of the bulls because it is a tradition that has been around for many many years and has worked fine before that, if someone competes in it than they should know that they have the risk of getting gored or killed, it is on the prerogative of the individual that takes part. As far as I know the bulls are killed and butchered up for whatever food is needed, this is just a way of tying in the practical result with a traditional festival that is older than most people would think about.

I've always wanted to run with the bulls. There is nothing more thrilling, I assume, than running, literally, for your life. I would know the risks fully and would be willing to accept any and all consequences of my choice. I can't feel pity for anyone hurt or killed in the race. It was their choice to participate, and like myself, they knew what could happen. I feel for the families of the participants, obviously, but the fault is solely on the victim's shoulders. The Bull Run is a huge event in Spain, and brings a lot of tourism. It garners a ton of publicity, and regardless of any "damages" the money they bring in is more than that which is lost. I also don't see why anyone is upset over the death of the bulls. Thousands of cows, bulls, pigs, etc. are slaughtered daily for food. This is no different.
