Brand Strength at Judgement Day

Planty

Pride of Manchester
If you're like me, you've probably looked at the Judgement Day card, marked out like crazy and realised for once its a definite buyable PPV.

But the most surprising thing about this year's PPV and its solid matches this year... is the fact that Smackdown has 4 matches on there, out of 7.

Considering the draft was supposed to strengthen RAW, by having SD! have to rely on its midcard its created some matches that simply couldn't be left off PPV.

Though lets look beyond the amount of matches that each brand has on Pay Per View (because if we simply did that, we'd just feel a bit of pity on ECW's part). Which brand has announced its strongest matches wrestling-wise, had the best build-up, and may have the lasting impression on this Pay Per View?

I'm going to do a bit of a short analysis on this.

They say a PPV is only as good as its opening match, and considering there's a few contenders in the ECW Championship match (featuring the established veteran and the ever reliable Swagger) or the Morrison/Benjamin athletic showcase... ECW and SD! both have a chance to shine here.

CM Punk / Umaga also has a chance to be used quite early on here but I doubt it considering the end of SD! last night featured them heavily brawling. I can't predict how well that match may be as the build-up hasn't featured Umaga in any in-ring action and has simply featured Umaga stopping Punk cashing in his MITB week after week. There doesn't appear to be any instantly recognisable motive for this. In terms of wrestling, I personally haven't seen these two go toe to toe before but I just hope they don't make CM Punk come across as an underdog in this match. WWE should learn from CM Punk's title reign even and realise that if they're trying to build up a legit main eventer, they can't have him win (especially as a face) by a lucky break. Nevertheless, this unpredicatability has got me routing for SD! once more, because in today's WWE product... predictability is a given (Except for when they swerve JUST to swerve people when they realise its becoming too predictable).

Matches I'd expect to see in the middle of the card are: Mysterio/Jericho (SD!) and Big Show/Cena (RAW). Now first of all, the unpredictability in this Smackdown contest intrigues me again. This could go either way. If they wanted to pull a feud out of this then having Chris win the title dirty would be perfect foundation. I originally thought Mysterio would go cleanly over, as the Intercontinental Title could do with a few big-name defenses to help build up the prestige, but it may be switched as a precaution due to Mysterio's recent (and recurring) knee injury and see based on Mysterio's health whether the feud can continue from there or have Jericho move onto a new feud with the IC title intact. Wrestling? We know these two can put on a show from their WCW days. Jericho is at the top of his game and Mysterio ever since No Way Out seems to have rediscovered his skill which had been lingering between short stints of being at full health.

As for Big Show/Cena, this match does nothing for me absolutely. If Big Show wins, he's purely getting the Cena rub simply because Cena is set to be filming a new movie shortly. If Cena wins it will look unrealistic unless its by DQ. After all, do you really expect a guy who has been slammed through a spotlight causing an explosion, and has barely been able to walk even... to beat a seven foot giant? The build-up has been terrible for this. The best part of it all has been The Miz with those epic promos, and he's not even involved in this contest legally (although an interference could happen). As for The Big Show, he can manhandle the company's #1 Face but as we saw on Superstars he can't hold his own against a perverse gold freak, after a throwaway match with a midget! The match will have some good storytelling as Cena will be selling a big injury, but it won't make for an entertaining one wrestling. And if Cena just doesn't sell the injury at all, it might make a better match but will have made all the build-up beforehand absolutely pointless. So I do not give credit to RAW for this match whatsoever.

As for the main events, despite being an Orton fan... Legacy has done nothing for me so far. And Batista hasn't impressed me ever since he came back from injury after vacating his title for the first time years ago. I can only hope Legacy will stay out of this match to leave a good one-on-one match but at the same time, if they are left out then how can they get over? Hopefully with the mix of styles, Batista's power and Orton's all-round offense could create something quite interesting. But make no mistake, it won't be spectacular. With a potential HHH appearance I think this match has a bit of potential to be strong enough to be on par with some matches on this pay per view, but like I just mentioned... don't expect it to be groundbreaking.

As for Jeff Hardy/Edge, I haven't enjoyed this build-up. Its just brawling after brawling. Though in the ring we do know these two can really battle it out. Royal Rumble was phenomonal even though in the end it simply became a way to kick off the Matt/Jeff feud. I would have appreciated this match more if it wasn't for rumours of Jeff leaving the company... it really just puts a dampener on things, knowing that someone is competing for the brand's top-tier title who could well be taking a long time out. For a main event match, it is solid and will do exactly what you expect: be a great wrestling match. I don't think this will be Jeff's last match with the company, I think if he decides not to resign then the fitting finish would be a match at Extreme Rules with Edge. Therefore don't be surprised if there's an unclear finish which takes this match to another pay-per-view.

So matchwise the obvious choice looks to be SD! Raw has a few surprise factors. For example, don't be shocked if we see the US title gaining some sort of exposure in the form of a segment etc. Also, we could well see a HHH return. Maybe even The Miz could interfere in Big Show/Cena, or god forbid Goldust. As for ECW, they'd best start building up this Tommy Dreamer angle at some point so there could well be an interference from Tommy here. Though SD!, in my has the biggest surprise factor in the fact that CM Punk could well cash in his MITB creating another solid match in Edge/CM Punk

In my opinion, this is the SD! Showcase, and with the new look brand featuring a lot of midcard exposure... I for one will fully enjoy some fresh matches as opposed to the same old faces with a real lack of chemistry (and while the main event isn't fresh faces... the in-ring chemistry remains).

Therefore, I feel you could take away any two of SD!'s matches, give ECW another match (For example, Finlay and Evan Bourne vs Tyson Kidd and DH Smith which would be superb) and you still couldn't fault Smackdown.

VERDICT:
SD!

What are your thoughts? Which brand wins Judgement Day on paper?

Smackdown hands down. I've been pushing the claims of SD as top show ever since the Draft, and this PPV should be a wonderful showcase of that. You have the two best heels in the world right, maybe ever (Edge and Jericho), a re-invigorated Mysterio, a Mr Money in the Bank who's rapidly getting his mojo back after his credibility took a stupid knock at Backlash, the man who could be the best monster since Vader, and above all, the rising star of John Morrison.

What more do you want? Ok, to have John Cena in the mix for SD might be nice. But you can't have everything.

I'm just happy that for this PPV the SD! Main Event hasn't got any sort of RAW Influence going on.
Last PPV, at Backlash, we saw Edge defend against RAW's Cena only to have an interference from RAW's Big Show. Just to name one example.

I never really paid attention to which brand looks "superior" at the PPV, but obviously SD! has a better card this time around. We have a predictable match for Big Show vs. Cena*, and then the predictable Orton vs. Batista. This match doesn't look good 1-on-1, will get the same treatment HHH vs. Orton got at WM25, and will need legacy to make it out into something. I expect nothing from the Raw Brand this time, unfortunatly. They'll give Raw a 4th match almost definitly...with no Diva's match either on the PPV, expect a Maryse vs. ________ Dark match. Maybe a Santina match, who knows?

ECW...I couldn't care less. Obviously with one match, it is not the dominant brand this PPV.

So Smackdown. Not only does it have 4 matches, but talent wise it looks good. Jeff and Edge will put on a show. Guaranteed. We may all assume the outcome of Edge not losing it so quick against someone who's rumored to leave in a few months. It'll still probably be the best match on the card. JoMo vs. Shelton should be a great match as well. I'm guessing, but I wouldn't be surprised if Jericho interferes in that match...and then JoMo returns the favor to cost Jericho the title later on..

I expect nothing of this PPV, it's got a few decent matches but with almost no buildups...I'm saddened. :(

*There's no way Cena can win this...for him to win this, would lower Show's stock a ton, and raise Cena's none because he's done all this before. On top of that...why not give him the rub? They've been semi-pushing Big Show for the Main Event since NWO09. Give it to him

Sadly, I have to side with Smackdown, not that they're product isnt good, I just have always been more of a Raw kind of guy and it's sad to see how awful monday nights are starting to get.
I would rather be anally irrigated by a syphlitic bear then sit through Cena/show or Orton/Batista, and I want you to think about the alternative I just proposed and consider just how unplesant that sounds, and know that I still mean it.
I also am fairly certain that this trend is going to continue for the forseeable future. Really, where is Orton to go after Batista gets screwed by Triple H on sunday? if Triple H doesnt run in, then triple H will be the obvious next challenger in line. If he does, this triggers another dull feud with him and Batista and probably renders us in the unfortunate position of having to watch cena/Orton yet again,or god forbid, Orton/HHH/Batista or Orton/Show (oh the horror) No thank you. I'd rather watch the taped tuesday night show that actually has some degree of uncertainty behind whats going to happen next. And ECW (which I hate saying now) is a roster filled with guys either on they're way to being rendered useless in the ring (sorry Tommy, I still love ya big guy and I hope they make you GM) or guys who have yet to find they're niche and are being re-worked as we speak. Aside from Bourne, Swagger and christian, there isnt really anybody else on the roster suited one way or the other for a ppv match. This does make me where where the hell Evan Bourne is though, couldnt he have been injected into this mediocre program with Swag and Christian to freshen this re-match up a bit?

SD is stacked with talent (Edge, hardy, Punk, Umaga, Morrison, Benjamin, Knox, Mysterio (when healthy), Jericho, it just isnt right lol) and Raw has a handful of main eventers most of us are growing very weary of watching clog the main event spotlight. My only complaint about SD's PPV lineup is where is Mike Knox? If he doesnt have a place on SD, they why wouldn't you keep him on RAw? Of course it's too soon to tell whether he'll be put to good use, but I still think SD had well enough monsters in Kane and Umaga (btw I think Knox could have just as good if not better a match with Punk).Ever since his quasi feud with Mysterio and Evan Bourne. During that interview, when asked why he attacked Rey and his response was "I've got nothing against Rey, I just like beating him up", I was totally sold on the unique, moses beard touting bastard. I hope they make proper room for him, maybe a feud with Kane wouldn't be a bad place to start, wouldn't be such a typical or boring big man match as Knox's style is a bit less typical for a big guy.
But I digress, I hope I see something different from raw and we get good programming on both shows, I just don't see how that happens for quite some time.

Is this really a question? When one brand has 4 matches and the others have 1 or 2 then the 4 have to really suck in order to lose. This PPV is interesting. Most of the matches have obvious winners or it doesn't really matter who wins. But most of the matches also look very good on paper. Christian/Swagger should deliver again. Benjamin/Morrison will be all kinds of awesome if given enough time. Ditto Jericho/Rey. Punk/Umaga are very close friends in real life and thus have great chemistry. I saw them go at it at a recent house show and loved it. Even Edge is fully capable of getting a very good match out of Queen Jeffery of Hardy.

No surprise that the two matches that don't look great are the ones that involve Cena and DAVE. Show has never lit the world on fire and he's going up against a guy who simply cannot carry big guys (despite all the dreamers who thought Cena/Khali was decent.) Orton/DAVE was decent at Armageddon but nothing mindblowing. It's probably just an excuse to have a Hunter run in.

This looks like a tale of two cards. ECW and SD! will frontload the card and both RAW matches will go on near the end. I see it going something like this:

Benjamin/Morrison
Christian/Swagger
Punk/Umaga
Jericho/Rey
Show/Cena
Edge/Jeffikins
Batista/Orton

This should be an overall fun card but I sense most of these feuds will have rematches at Extreme Rules. It's a shame they couldn't fit an MVP title defense in on the card. After RAW where he was interrupted by Regal, Matt Hardy and Kofi I thought it was a lock that there'd be some kind of match made for the PPV.

SMACKDOWN! Will definetly steal the show. I myself is looking forward to Jericho/Mysterio. We all are familiar with there WCW days, but that was 12yrs ago. This will introduce new fans & recandle the older fan what we are missing in todays performers. Jericho will go down in WWE History as one of the Greatest. Jericho has held the IC Title more than anyone ever! -Instant Classic

im goin a little off topic here but is this the first ppv in a very long time (if not ever) with all just singles matches?? i know its a pg era but no gimmick matches or anythin seems a lil weak. im quite lookin 4ward to punk v umaga and rey v jericho tho! smackdowns future looks rather rosey!

Umagas attacks are either out of wanting competition or back a few weeks ago when punk started his very enjoyable cash ins week in week out and edge said hes going to call his wife. Maybe somehow she set up umaga as an enforcer even though shes on raw..who knows.

He does only show up during cash ins..thought it was great last night how punk was ready for him and just smoked him with the case.

cant wait till tomorrow, felt same way for backlash and that ppv was awesome. was weary going into wm and...it sucked but i gave it a chance.

I think its a shame how ECW don't have another match on the card personally. It got to me a little during the broadcast how Tiffany said "You are ECW's Main Event for Judgement Day"... to Swagger and Christian.

Its their ONLY event, their only match!

I think if the brand's purpose is to build-up talent, then they could at least allow a spot for certain ECW wrestlers on a PPV aswell as the title match which is a given. It can be seen as a reward for the hard work that Bourne, Kidd etc put in week after week.

ECW easily has a lot of strength considering its main focus is on the good ol' wrestling, it just needs to be utilised by the WWE on a PPV Stage.

I am very supportive of Smackdown, hands down. And I am not a Smackdown guy. Vickie Guerrerro had a habit of getting under my skin (and now she's on RAW, I hardly ever watch anymore), amongst other factors. Like Vince had said, the Draft usually has a way of changing things (for better and for worse), and this makes for no exception.

But I digress: with the JD card the way it is, on this interpromotional brand PPV, I will go with Smackdown because of what Smackdown is now offering: talent, gimmick matches, what titles are being defended, and the storylines leading up to Judgment Day.

My analysis:

Shelton Benjamin v. John Morrison (SD)

A minor storyline between these two, I see this as an opportunity for Morrison to shine as a single's competitor. In all actuality, I saw the tag of Miz/Morrison something to just hold Morrison down, because, let's face it; Morrison was an ECW champ for cryin' out loud (mind you, the ECW belt is what I consider a midcard belt) replacing Chris Benoit. As for Shelton Benjamin, he should go back to being Tag Team material and take on the tag belts. Overall, not quite a solid match-up, but it still gives some brownie points for Smackdown.

FTW: Morrison.

Randy Orton v. Batista (RAW)

A solid match, quite possibly the only solid match for RAW. I believe that Orton might be single-handedly carrying RAW on his shoulders at this point. Even though Cena did it for quite some time, I'm glad he dropped the ball and is doing something else. Wish it wasn't with the Big Show (something new, please?), but no matter. This is about Orton and Batista. Batista needs to get some sort of frustration out on Orton for putting him on the shelf, and what better way to do so on Orton. Great build-up and use of talent. Unfortunately, there will be sme sort of involvement with Legacy members DiBiase and Rhodes, making sure that the title safely remains within Orton's grasp.

FTW: Orton

Jeff Hardy v. Edge (SD)

Ah, yes. Another solid match-up between two great superstars. And yet, another plot of revenge mirroring the WWE Champtionship storyline. Mind you, there hasn't been many promos or matches bewteen these two, but it will be a great match, even if Hardy doesn't pull away with the belt (which he probably won't do). I think this will turn towards CM Punk pulling something away with the MITB against Edge (like last year: yawn), and Punk losing. Hardy will slide away from the title picture, out of WWE and his contract, and CM Punk will get airtime.

FTW: Edge

Christian v. Jack Swagger (ECW)

Sigh. Christian taking on a guy who has less than a year of major-league (if you consider ECW a major league) experience under his belt. For some reason, I don't like Swagger. I just wanna see him scream out "Hey yoooou guys!!! Ha ha!" one of these days. This match is following a "I wanna piss and moan until I get my title back," match, sorry to say, and, if it weren't for Christian, I wouldn't waste my time. Like I have mentioned many times before, ECW now is a disgrace; it's McMahon's shithouse for wrestlers that aren't up to par. I hope Christian takes the win and feuds with someone who is worthy of a championship shot.

FTW: Christian

John Cena v. The Big Show (RAW)

Another match that makes me sigh and get up to get a Pepsi or take a bathroom break. It's sad to see a wrestler pushed so far end up back on mid-card duty. But then again, Cena has to get TV time somehow. But the guy can't even sell injuries, much less take time off. Big Show should be taking on Kozlov or bullying the ECW locker room instead of swapping spit with Guerrerro on RAW. That honestly just disgusts me, and I bet Eddie would be flopping like a fish in his grave. Does the WWE honestly think they could do away with Eddie Guerrero's memory by ****ting out his widow? Seriously... who let the farm animals run RAW? Anywho, this match hs gone down the drain and the storyline is like a chunky schoolyard bully picking a fight with a crippled. I hope Cena is squashed and takes some seriously needed time off (seeing that is the storyline), but however it may seem to me, Cena will become the SuperHogan-esque and win with some amazing put over by the announcers.

FTW: Cena (Unfortunately)

Rey Mysterio v. Chris Jericho (SD)

I like Jericho. He has become such a great heel since his return, and I hope he keeps this "cold" streak going, and this match-up is no exception. With some gold on his waist, and possibly the idea of unmasking the mysterious luchador, Jericho will vault himself pretty high up. I was thinking of having Rey Rey turn into a crazed individual (like they did with Kane way back when he was unmasked), but there goes the Spanish demographic. All in all, I'm rooting for Jericho for a solid high-flying match.

FTW: Jericho

CM Punk v. Umaga (SD)

I take this match either one of two ways: Punk gets creamed in front of millions his fans in Chicago, sending his MITB status reeling with him for a couple of months, or Punk will pull a near-victory against Umaga. I haven't really followed this as I should have, but then again, I'm not very concerned with Umaga at this point in time. Umaga needs a mouthpiece like he had with Estrada, otherwise he's worthless and has no focus. I mean, that's not really a bad thing; without a mouth, Umaga can come and go as he pleases, taking out random wrestlers with no reasoning behind it, until a manager is revealed later on to be a master manipulator. Like I said, I haven't been caring about this match up.

FTW: Leaning towards Punk.

Whew! There ya have it. And like Mr. Plantastic has mentioned, there are a lot of open opportunities for RAW to make somewhat of an impact here. My biggest concern is the lack of the Unified Tag Champs Primo and Carlito. Being as though they are a unified title, shouldn't they be placed somewhere on the card? The tag belts should be defended at nearly every PPV here on out being brought together. But I am not creative. I am not Stephanie. XD I'm not flushing RAW down the toilet with placing HHH in every storyline that I possibly can.

It's time for Smackdown to shine once again!
