Best Forgotten Champion

upz

Dark Match Jobber
This is a thread to post the best forgotten champion, like Mabel or David Arquette and which belt they had.

I will put in an honorable mention to Ahmed Johnston - IC Title, I loved him when I was young.

I will give this one as a joke to the Smoking Gunns and Bret Gunn firstly because if I am correct he was the winner of the first and only WWF kickboxing championship or something like that.

I liked Yokozuna. He held the WWF title for a good amount of time, but people seem to forget how good he was. With the possible exception of Vader, probably the best monster heel of the 90s.

Mabel actually did not hold a belt. He may have had the tag titles with Mo, but it was a short run at best if it even counted. How about Brian Kendrick and Paul London? They had one of the most incredible reigns as tag champs but they weren't really recognized at all. The Mountie and Marty Jannety also had short lived IC reigns that are forgotten about easily.

How about Rick Rude, despite being a one time intercontinental champion, his list of accomplishments and titles in the WWE and WCW should not be forgotten.

Marty Jannetty is a great choice, cptn! He was an Intercontinental Champ for 2 weeks, winning from Shawn Michaels with the help of Mr. Perfect, defending against Bam Bam Bigelow, and losing the following week to Michaels again.

Kerry von Erich was a VERY short lived Intercontinental Champ, winning from and losing to Mr. Perfect.

The Headbangers were tag team champs for a little while. A VERY little while...and nobody cared at the time to be honest.

People often only remember The Mountie's reign as IC champ because of who he won it from (Bret Hart) and who he lost it to (Roddy Piper). He was a funny character, and his tazer gimmick was interesting, but he wasn't IC Championship material.

Who forgets that Jeff Hardy won the IN title from Triple H when the Hardyz were put in an awesome short-term feud with the Two-Man Power Trip?

chris jericho no one seems to remember that he was wcw champion a few months before he was undisputed champ (the 1st ever) when he beat the rock at no mercy and lost it on raw a few weeks later

Randy Savage is the Best Forgotten Champion...2 time WWF champ, 1 time IC champ...he should be in the Hall of Fame, but instead they pick Jim Ross. What a joke. Nobody ever says a word about the man anymore, it's disgusting.

Macho man should be HoF this year, Savage1988 and agreed on your choice.

Many people still think that Kane have never won a WWE/F championship, but he is a former champ!! He won the belt in a first blood macth vs Stone Cold at KOTR 98 and his reign just lasted 24 hours, as Austin took it back at RAW.

Owen. When people bring up best ic champions of all time they bring up Perfect, Razor, Bret, Jericho. Owen won the belt twice, and was on his way for victory number 3 until tragedy struck. Multiple time tag champ with Bulldog, Yoko and Jarrett, European champion the guy won every belt except the big one. Why he isnt in the hall of fame yet with Bulldog I don't know. Bulldogs another forgotten champion.

I would say D'Lo Brown.

I liked watching him wrestle, I thought he was pretty athletic for a big guy. When he beat X-Pac for the title, I didn't think it was smart, but after watching more of his matches, I grew to like him.

Gregory Helms as the Cruiserweight champ - the guy is a wrestling machine (can fly, creative with moves and sells like few) and if the WWE brass knew anything, they would ush this guy into a nice face underdog type run for either the WWE or World Title when he returns from injury

Great Muta - only achieved TV title while in WCW, what a crying shame that he didn't get at least a US title run

Bruno Sammartino. Arguably the greatest champion of all time, but they dont mention him anymore. Hardly anyone knows of him except of people who actually saw him. It's a shame, because he's right up there with Austin and Hogan when it comes to money drawing.

I was just about to say that, and I just created a thread that related a lot to him in this very Old School Forum. he held the title for 10 friggin years over two reigns! it's completely ridiculous how no one considers his the best wrestler of all time.

Buddy Rodgers jobbed to him in 48 seconds! he even beat Lou Thesz!

I might create another thread about him, hahaha.

But yeah easily the most forgotten champ of all time and arguably the BEST champ of all time. The face of WWWF/WWF for twenty years!

If you're bringing up Bruno, how about someone whose title reign spanned almost 3 years and that is Pedro Morales. Not only that, he held every title there was to hold when he was an active wrestler and I can't remember the last time he was brought up. Looking back his reign is one of the longest in history and he is nothing more than an afterthought to many

A lot of the posts are of champions who either a) had short title reigns like Kane and Jannetty, or b) had long reigns 30-years ago and defended like 10 times per year. Here's one I discussed with a freind the other day - William Regal.

Let's not forget, in the mid-90's WCW, Regal was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, Television Champions of all time. He had a classic feud with The British Bulldog and narrowly escaped each match with his belt in tact. But he held it, defended it, and got great heel heat. Cut fantastic promos, and worked a sound technical match.

Speaking of the mid 90's WCW, let's remember that Rick Rude held what is now the World Heavyweight Championship belt before it was designated as such. Everyone remembered Vader as the WCW champ at the time, but Rick Rude was a top champion and defended the title in impressive fashion.

Funaki. The tough japanese superstar is never credited for his accolades on WWE TV.

He is a former Cruiserweight Champion and also a former Hardcore Champion.

Taz, he were awesome champion in ECW. he even had her own title made for him

can't remember if he had a run in WWF/E with a belt

He won the tag championships with Spike Dudley at one point and he's a 3 time hardcore champion (which doesn't really count, lol). So I see where you're coming from talking about him as a forgotten champion. He's kind of a joke on ECW these days. I don't mean to tarnish his legacy but it's just the case, unfortunately.

I see where your coming from Prax, all of the ECW guys who went to WWE bar RVD have been treated like a joke. and there all good at what they do/did. Another forgotten champion is Rhino. he will forever be a fuckin manbeast

I'm going with Ron Simmons and Butch Reed to start when they were the tag team know as Doom. They were the first black NWA tag team champion and defeated one of the greatest tag teams of all time in The Stieners fo the there title regin.

Also, I think it is forgotten that Ron Simmons held the WCW world title for nearly 5 months after beating Vader for it. Ron was a good champion and once again the first black man to hold a world title in a major promotion.People just think of Ron Simmons as a memeber of APA and the guy that walka around saying 'DAMN' now. But before all that he was a great wrestler and forgotten champion

Well... while I agree that a lot of the ECW talent was to a degree underused by WWE, let's not get carried away here. ECW was a third rate promotion, no matter how you look at it. And we're talking about some of the talent as if they had won the WWE championship, which despite admitting that they were underused, I don't think it's something a lot of that talent could've accomplished.

I don't see Taz as a WWE champion, he's too small, and, I don't know, I just don't see him in that role. Rhino is another one I don't see as WWE champion. Intercontinental champion, sure, but WWE champion, I don't think so. Same with Tommy Dreamer, although I love the guy.

With regards to this, I think these champions are remembered properly for their runs in ECW, as they should be. Taz was underused in the WWE and should've been used a little better in his later years (despite injury), and Rhino could've been a good IC champ like I said, but I don't think they're forgotten champions. Winning the ECW championship and going to WWE is like winning an indy belt and going to WWE, no one cares once you've gotten to the top promotion.

Ken Shamrock.

If I remember correctly he were IC Champ and i know he was the NWA Champ. you just never hear anything about him anymore, which is abit of a shame cos he had a decent amount of talent for someone who were a MMA fighter

Shamrock was also a tag champ am sure either with bossman or al snow, or maybe both.

Old School Steve Corino.

This man was of very high championship calibur and shoul dhave been signed by the big two for having superior mic skills than any of the guys who they were forcefully pushing (yeah, even Mike Awesome). But unfortunately, being undersized only works for Buddy Rogers and Ric Flair. It's a shame though. This guy could have been the guy who paved the way for Christian to be a world champion in WWE.

Jushin Liger - WCW Lightweight Champion - People know Jushin Liger as the great Japanese wrestler, but he once held the WCW Lightweight belt after beating Brian Pillman

Andre the Giant - WWF Champion - Defeated Hulk Hogan for the WWF title, then 45 seconds later tried to sell it to Ted DiBiase, which caused Jack Tunney to vacate the belt, making Andre the Giant the shortest reigning WWF/E champion ever.

Stan Hansen - AWA champion - After no-showing an AWA event because of obligations in Japan, the AWA demanded their belt back, which Stan Hansen mailed to them...after running over the belt several times with his truck complete with muddy tires.

Chris Benoit - WCW champion - In an act of sheer brilliance, WCW gave Chris Benoit the World Heavyweight Championship the night before he was leaving to go to the rival company. Benoit won his match at WCW Souled Out, and joined the WWF the next day. Good thinking WCW.

Rey Mysterio - World Heavyweight Champion (actually, this is one that people WANT to forget...)

Randy Savage is the Best Forgotten Champion...2 time WWF champ, 1 time IC champ...he should be in the Hall of Fame, but instead they pick Jim Ross. What a joke. Nobody ever says a word about the man anymore, it's disgusting.
That's only because Savage and McMahon had a HUGE falling out from all appearances.
