Bad Feud, Good Match

Welcome to My (And Not Sly's) House
You often hear people say that the buildup to a match is great but they need to have the matches work to pay off the buildup. Often times the matches don't live up to the hype, such as Perfect vs. Shawn at Summerslam 93 or almost any Flair vs. Rhodes match. What I want to know is what are some instances you can think of where the matches were great but the buildup was a letdown or forgettable at best.

I'll go with HHH vs. Austin at No Way Out in 2001. The buildup was sort of a letdown because Rikishi was revealed as the man who ran over Stone Cold and HHH was the one who orchestrated it. I guess I'm harping on the way they want about it. They had a bad match at Survivor Series but at No Way Out they had a brilliant one. The buildup between Survivor Series was forgettable as well.

I will choose a recent one and go with Bryan and Ziggler. There was really no build up at all. They were just thrown together for a Bragging Rights, Intercontinental vs United States championship. Last year at Bragging Rights, Miz and Morrison had a solid build up but not the best of a match but this year was the complete opposite. They didn't even announce the match untill the week before. Then they wrestled an outstanding match at the pay per view, only to be followed up by an even better match on Raw which is arguably the match of the year. Then once again, they competed on Smackdown. Now it wasn't as great as the one days before on Raw but it was a solid match that had some good spots just like every other Daniel Bryan match. I cannot wait to see the pair go at it again and tear the house down.

the undertaker/kane build up was good. but the match at night of champions sucked

He's asking us to name a feud that was terrible, but had good matches. Not the other way around.

For me I would Have to agree with what somebody else said, Dolph ziggler and daniel bryan. They cut one promo against each other prior to Bragging rights that really wasn't anything special if you ask me. But at the PPV they put on an incredible match.

A most recent one and one that main evented Wrestlemania was HHH vs orton for the WWE Title. I mean come on u have 2 great stars one that is loved by the fans and one that is a mega heel and hated where ever he goes plus the major title of the company is on the line in the damn main event. Ok so there fued was amazing and it started out with Orton fueding with Stephanie McMahon who he felt wasnt treating him right and not giving him the one on one title match he deserved. Steph gets frustrated with Orton due to the insults that he kept throwing at him and she slaps him. Mr.Mcmahon gets involved and decides hes gonna fire Orton if he doesnt apologize but Orton doesnt still continuing to bash Stephanie by saying shes worthless and that McMahon needs Orton. Right when Vince is about to fire Orton he gets slapped in the face by Orton and punted in the skull as well. Orton wins the Rumble and says the next night he has an A.D.D problem(Bullshit) And begins a fued with shane. shane and orton fued all the way into No Way Out and its a big fued too which Orton has won in that fued Orton was gonna also punt steph to the head but shane saved her. Everyone in the Mcmahon family was taken down by Orton excluding Linda but shes different. The only one left to save the Mcmahon family is their big strong son in law HHH. HHH had just won the WWE Title and Orton had accepted to face him. In their fued Orton and the Legacy helped tke out HHh and hag cuffed him to the ropes while HHH had to watch Orton kiss his helpless wife Stephanie who was at the time knocked out.

u see just by reading that thats a fued u would want to see on tv and it did happen. But the only problem was that their match was so not what people were expecting. I mean it was a BORINGIMGONNAGOUSETHEWASHROOMCUZTHEREAINTANYTHINGSPECIALHERE match. Well in the end HHH won and yeah you kinda see where im going with this.

One that I'm thinking about was CM Punk and Rey Mysterio. The match at WM was good. The thing was there wasn't really a fued with it. CM Punk challenged Rey like a week or two before WM. There was hardly any build up if any at all.

Randy Orton vs Jack Swagger - No build up, but the match was so good they redid it at a ppv.

Randy Orton vs Sheamus I - This happened when Orton was still in Legacy, I thought they had a great match, but it was overshadowed by legacy on the verge of a breakup

The build up for Kurt Angle and AJ Styles in TNA for the TNA heavyweight championship was a let down, but the matches they had were incredible. That usually happens a lot in TNA. The build up for matches will be lackluster, but the match itself will be good.

HHH vs Chris Jericho from Wrestlemania 18. Was there even a feud there, if there was I have never heard anything of it (I wasn't watching at the time so there may well have been). There wasn't even a recap video shown before it which is unheard of. The main event of WM and not even a quick video package to let us know why these two deserve to be in what should be in theory the biggest match of the year.

However it was a pretty damn good match, it was technically sound, it had some cool spots, the right man won etc. The only thing wrong with it is there was absolutely no crowd response to it, but that isn't really their fault, the crowd wasn't quiet because it was a bad match merely because it was going on after Rock vs Hogan and anything that went on after that match was always going to be an afterthought and that is exactly what this match turned out to be.

There was a feud, it's just that the Feud was between Triple H and Stephanie, and Jericho was just thrown in because he was the champion at the time.

I'd say that the first ever tag team Ladder Match at No Mercy 99 would fall into this category... Edge and Christian and The Hardys (aka The New Brood) it seemed were thrown together just so they would have a reason to make a boob joke (the "Terri Invitational Tournament" get it? T.I.T.? And Terri had big tits? Yeah, it wasn't very funny back then either) the build up was awful, the "prize" was stupid (the "services" of Terri, get it? She was going to fuck the winners... Yeah, it wasn't very funny back then either) but the match was amazing and started a new Golden Age in Tag Team wrestling

I feel like I talk about this match all the time on the forums, but it fits into this topic too. Shawn Michaels vs. Jeff Jarrett from In Your House July 1995. I really don’t remember the build to this match. I don’t know how Jarrett and Michaels came together. The feud one and done meaning there was no rematch. Jarrett left the WWF for a few months immediately following this match and by the time he returned HBK was being pushed toward his first world title. The feud itself is very forgettable but the actual match was awesome.

Finlay vs. JBL at WrestleMania 24. After months of Vince showing Hornswoggle tough love, the illogical move to make Finlay Hornswoggle's father, the even less logical move to have JBL be the only one who knew this, the failure to provide a solid motive for Horny to pretend to be Vince's child in the first place, the infeasibility of pulling such scheme off, the silly hospital bed attack... After all that, we got a pretty good match between JBL and Finlay. That was quite surprising. Awful feud. Surprising match which didn't involve any Vince McMahon or sports entertainmenty stupidity.

Great choice. I remember watching this match thinking the same exact thing...and that HBK looked drunk with that wierd beard he was rocking that night.

My choice is Bret Hart v Bob Backlund in the towel match from Survivor Series 1994. I can't remember a single thing about how this match came about. I think i remember Owen having Backlund attacking Bret but I'm not sure. Either way the match was awesome and, don't make fun of me I was 6 at the time, but I will admit I cried at the end Wen Mrs. Hart threw in the towel because Owen convinced her too. When a match could draw that kind of emotion from a fan, you know it;s a great match lol
