Pre-Show Stalwart
So I go to my local supermarket the other day and get ID'd.Now clearly you guys don't know how old I look, but If I tell you I had about three quaters of a beard going on you'll get the point. Anyway on being ID'd I pointed out to the checkout women I was 29 and did not have any,at which point she refused to serve me. I bought the rest of my goods and told her I felt it was stupid that she knew I was over 18 and yet she still wouldn't serve me. At which point she sai "I know your over 18".WTF!! So I said "well if you know I'm old enough to buy alcohol why won't you serve me"? I was informed this was "sainsburys policy". What Sainsbury's policy forbids the use of common sense? And why do they have so little faith in the competence of thier staff they belive they need a 7 YEAR margin of error?
Discuss!

Really, she's just doing what she's told. Speaking as a low-importance underling of a corporate machine, who deals with customers, she isn't making the rules, but her hands are tied. If her boss tells her "They must have ID to buy alcohol", then she has to do that because her job is likely more important to her than your happiness. It's stupid, it's frustrating, the customer doesn't like it, the employee doesn't like it, but it's out of her control.

Bring your ID next time. If that is company policy, she has to follow it. You can never really tell how old someone is, so the best thing to do is to ask for their ID. It'd be much worse if she sold alcohol to a minor than if someone who forgot their ID didn't get any alcohol. Common sense.

Because if she is seen selling alcohol to someone without asking for ID, and that person ends up under 18, the shop assistant themselves gets a £1000 fine, not the shop. SO they have to be extremely careful. If the management has told them to ID everyone, they need to do it or they will get the flak. Always handy to carry ID anyway.

I don't have ID. My point is that she knew there would be no fine because she agreed I was over 18!So as I said company policy told her not to use common sense! That is wrong whichever way you look at it.

I'd rather them ID everyone who bought alcohol than have 14 year olds (And younger) sitting at bus stops binge drinking alcohol until they're so drunk they don't know what they're doing. Not only does this affect their health, it highly increases the risk of them commiting a crime - losing their life in jail and affecting someone else's negatively. Just get some ID, the pros of this are huge compared to the cons.

Not only would "I" have not sold you anything you need an I.D to purchase. I would've kicked you out of my store, for having an attitude about needing something you should naturally have on you at all times.

This is the number one thing that annoyed the shit out of me, when I worked in a Gas Station. I'd get these stupid idiots, who even "I" knew were over the age of 21, who refused to carry I.D. on them and yet they'd want to buy alcohol. I'd refuse them, and they'd throw a fit because of it.

Well, guess what.. its not just common law, its common sense. You need to show solid proof you are legal. I don't give a shit if you have white in your hair, and a full fucking piece of plant growing on your face. No I.D., no I.D. required purchases. Oh, and before you ask "Why is it common sense?" Well, simply put.. if you drive to where ever you go to purchase anything from, naturally you should be carrying a fucking Driver's I.D. incase you get stopped.

If you walked, thats another story, but still not a worthy enough one to be smart enough to know you could get carded. You're buying something thats such a huge deal regarding age to begin with, so stop harassing employee's for doing their job - and use your damn head the next time. If you're really almost 30, you'd think you'd of smartened up by now.
