Are there any mega-matches left in the WWE?

The thread title kinda speaks for itself, I would think.

Looking back at WrestleMania 17, The Rock versus Stone Cold was (undoubtedly) a mega match. The crowd wanted that match like ice cream on a hot day. And when it finally happened, everything just hit the right spot. All of the facets of the match, including the build up, were absolutely perfect. And even looking at it now, there is no doubt that those guys were the epitome of a what makes a mega-match in the WWE.

And since then, the WWE has tried to make that type of mega-match happen again. The Rock versus Hulk Hogan, The Rock versus John Cena etc.

So, my question is this: is there a huge match left in wrestling that the WWE could possibly showcase?

I'm looking at the card for WrestleMania and I honestly think that Sting versus Triple H is the closest that the wrestling world, and the WWE, has to offer right now. There is no past star who could step into the ring and face a current star to put them over. And even if there was, no current star is on the right level to make it viable.

Honestly, I don't think there is. But what about you?

Brock Lesnar vs. The Rock is the #1 that jumps out at me.

There's a back story because Brock's first title victory was over the Rock, and since that time, the Rock has become a household name and huge movie star, and Lesnar is at the peak of his game.

Roman Reigns vs John Cena- In my opinion out of matches yet to happen that will thisiis the biggest one that will and at WrestleMania 32.

The Rock vs Randy Orton- OK,maybe not the biggest matchup...but its 13 years in the making and could be huge. I've heard rumors of this taking place at Mania next year. Hopefully this is true and not just a Facebook rumor.

Until it is deemed impossible:

the Undertaker vs Sting is a 'mega-match' that is still possible between perhaps, two of the Greatest Pro-Wrestling characters of All-Time.

Oh, and whilst this might not be a mega-match in terms of being a draw, I'd say:

the Rock vs Daniel Bryan
Who is the real "People's Champion"?

Mega-Matches that could "realistically" happen...

Undertaker vs Sting- best chRacters ever. Both devoted to their company, and fans would go apeshit

John Cena vs Stone Cold- both the stars of their respected eras, but two TOTALLY different characters and people. I can't imagine the nuclear heat toward Cena if this happened at a wrestle mania in front of that crowd.

Before the streak was broken I would've said Cena-Taker as well.

Other than that, I thinks that's it. Think of your most popular guys right now, Daniel Bryan, John Cena, and .... Reigns isn't HUGE yet, Ambrose isn't huge yet, Ziggler has a slim chance because he does get some mainstream attention but Cena and Bryan are really the only two. With that said

Heel Cena vs Face Bryan would HUGE. But won't happen

Trish or Lita vs. a select few of the current women would cause a bit of a stir.

Punk vs. Triple H would be huge considering how the last year has played out.

One mega-match I can still see happening is Daniel Bryan vs. Brock Lesnar. It was what many wanted this year, and they both stole the show at Wrestlemania 30. Can you imagine a "Yes" Movement resurrection that Paul Heyman tries to keep down? Or The Authority trying to dissuade Bryan from facing the more fierce-looking Beast? Daniel Bryan is red hot whenever the cards are stacked against him, and the biggest one WWE could ever throw in his path IS Lesnar.

Theres not many MEGA matches left. But because of Wwe's constant need of Cena being in the lime light. They neglect to give us two (possible) mega matches in.....
Randy Orton vs The Rock
And
Randy orton vs Brock Lesnar
Besides these two matches, there's always the new face of the company vs John Cena. Or somewhere down the line (if the story is right) a mega face vs Triple H (coming out of retirement)

CM Punk would need to come back. A dream match would be a Daniel Bryan mania.

Brock would need to stay and take on The Rock or Orton.

Maybe we can get Seth Rollins vs Jeff Hardy one day.

It's sad how options are limited.

All the big matches to me are on the next roster.

The ultmate dream match of dream matches----

THE ROCK vs SHAWN MICHAELS.

This can still happen. 2 of the most charismatic, and best performers of all time . Imagine the promo work between these two. HBK can come back for one more, (one more Shawn, come on!) in his home state of Texas next year for WM32.

Add STING vs UNDERTAKER On top of that next year and you got that 100,000+ attendance for WM, guaranteed.

CM PUNK vs STONE COLD. I can see this still happening down the road if Punk ever comes back, but before Stone Cold hits 50....

Or if Punk is really serious about never returning to the WWE, we still have the biggest match that never happened in the attitude era:

GOLDBERG vs STONE COLD. Goldberg is still open for one more match, and no better opponent for him than Austin.

Any one of these are Mega, Super, Ultimate Dream bouts on par with Hogan/Andre, Rock/Hogan, or Austin/Rock 2001.

The Rock is not done yet so, they have some huge matches left such as
The Rock vs Daniel Bryan and The Rock vs Brock Lesnar. One option is, they need to make Reigns a huge star then, they can have great matches - Roman Reigns vs John Cena and Roman Reigns vs The Rock. Speaking of huge matches, we need to have huge stars and John Cena and Daniel Bryan are the only two who are huge on the current full time roster. To have huge matches, a big star needs to return. Another helluva match is John Cena vs Daniel Bryan II. It will be another huge match if done at a Wrestlemania. Considerably, Cena and Bryan are Rock and Austin of this era. They have the immense fanbase to pull off a top notch match with sellout arena. With the current roster, I can't think of any other match than John Cena vs Daniel Bryan. Either CM Punk or any retired legend needs to return which is probably impossible. One more thing, except for CM Punk no other retired wrestler can wrestle a quality match. If they give a match with any old legend, it will not be a fair match. It should be treated like crap. With the dream matches, we need to have a good match also. The crowd will bullshit on the match if it doesn't go good.

One that instantly jumps out is Brock Lesnar Vs Randy Orton. Which now seems to be a massive missed opportunity.

Now that would be a good match.

Instead we get John Cena Vs Brock Lesnar over...and over.... and over.

I'm not going to list some that were already mentioned. They're great and will make the crowd pop. Lol.

Here are a few:

Kurt Angle versus Daniel Bryan - This could be an instant classic in the making, especially if they are both faces.

Kurt Angle versus Rusev - You could already see how this would make a great moment and match.

Well just wanted to bring up Angle in this one.

It's ironic. So many posts on this forum in past months deal with folks not wanting part-timers to have such an important role in building PPVs, yet almost all the matches suggested in this thread involve people who no longer work full-time for WWE. Look at all the contests that involve Rock, Stone Cold, Brock and Sting. If that's what it takes to build a mega-match, then Vince McMahon must be on the right track after all, no? We've also got Kurt Angle thrown in there, as well as Undertaker, who could be seen as a part-timer himself.......not to mention CM Punk!

However, since the "same old people" occupy full-time status on the roster, we've seen almost all the combinations we can get from matching those performers. Whomever John Cena faces will get a lot of attention for the match, yet Cena's role is changing and WWE is using him differently than they used to.

Building a mega-match that contains only the full-time wrestlers we see on TV each week? The only way I can see it done is by turning John Cena into a super-heel and matching him against one of the top good guys; hopefully one of the newer guys like Roman Reigns or Seth Rollins after a huge build-up is done on their behalf.

Other than that, they have to call on someone from outside the company to build a super main event for Wrestlemania.

Pro wrestling sure is different than it used to be.

One; completely unmentioned in this thread that shocks me is John Cena vs The Undertaker. It seems to me to be a match that needs to happen before Taker rides off into the sunset. It'd be a huge match also, on astronomical proportions.

There aren't many "mega" draw matches left after that. It just shows how we need new top billed stars, and how WWE really needs to build them well.

To add to the list...I'll put some that more than likely WON'T HAPPEN at this point IMO

John Cena vs. Stone Cold- Some may say "never say never" but at this point Cena is done facing legends because he is the legend. Cena vs Reigns is pretty much set for next years event and WrestleMania 32 IMO is the last chance for one more match with one Rattlesnake. I don't see Austin returning for one more but if he does then it will be against either Cena or Reigns because that is where the money is at. Those two matches are dream matches.

Roman Reigns vs. Stone Cold (Read Above)

Sting vs The Undertaker No explanation needed.

Randy Orton vs. Stone Cold Won't happen. I see Orton either going heel next year and facing The Rock, or remaining face and fighting Wyatt.

Matches that are 50% likely

Randy Orton vs Brock Lesnar
If Lesnar re-signs is will more than likely that the two clash at Summerslam with the winner going over to set up a match with The Rock.

Sting vs. John Cena- Two of the biggest legends of all-time. Some people would say Sting should go over. However, I say Cena deserves the 'W' the most.

Triple H vs. Roman Reigns If this would have happened instead of Orton vs. Reigns. I think Reigns would have still had his momentum going now.

Match that will happen that I forgot to include earlier

Reigns vs. Ambrose vs. Rollins (WWE Hvt. Title) I see this headlining Summerslam.

John Cena (heel) vs. Daniel Bryan (face) Either at WrestleMania 33 or Summerslam 2016

kind of amuses me that a few of these anticipated "mega-matches" have happened already (like Lesnar-Rock, Cena-Bryan). And both of them were at big PPVs and had clean, no-bullshit finishes!

of the potential Cena matches, really the only one left is Taker, and that might well never happen now.

Lesnar-Orton would definitely be intriguing, particularly if Orton can recapture the same intensity and buzz he had in 2009/2010.

I understand what the OP is asking for in terms of a Mega-Match. A lot of the previous ones mentioned are good, but really only Rock vs HBK or Stone Cold vs Punk would reach that mega-status to me. And both of those are very very very unlikely.

Undertaker vs Sting next years feels like Mayweather vs Pacquiao right now.. 5 years too late. Sure it's cool, but not as big as it coulda been.

The only POTENTIAL mega-match I see remaining.. is Brock Lesnar vs Stone Cold. Both men have stated over the past few years they would like a match together. Brock (probably jokingly) punked out Stone Cold for leaving WWE rather than putting him over in 2002. Read that in an interview when Brock was asked who he would like a match with. And even though HBK and Punk were higher up his list, Austin expressed interest in a match with Brock as well.

The intensity leading up to this on top of the intensity and physicality of the actual match would be remarkable.

The one mega match I'm dying to see is Kevin Owens against Bray Wyatt. Now some of you, actually most of you wouldn't consider this any kind of a mega match, but considering these are two up and comers and have something to prove, it will would one hell of a fight.

Wyatt keeps putting himself out there as the ultimate nutbar, he wants to raise the dead, save this person and convert that person. Anything to gain control of others.

Owens on the other hand is a pure heel, he like Wyatt gets into your head and plays games with you. When you're on his turf it's his rules only, he does what he wants and screw everyone else.

I love to see Owens brought up to the main roster and take on Wyatt. I can see Wyatt standing in the middle of the ring talking shit about Owens, then Owens comes out says "Enough of this shit" and beats the holy hell out of him.

It would be one cracking feud and would produce some of the best matches we've seen in a long time.

Imagine this

Wrestlemania 32
WWE World Heavyweight Championship
(c) Brock Lesnar vs The Rock vs John Cena vs Triple H

Imagine the Paul Heyman promos on Rock Cena and HHH
The Rock's promos
Cena's promos
HHH using his power

This would be AMAZING in my eyes

Think of the Singles and Tag matches with this

Summerslam
Lesnar vs Triple H
Rock vs Cena

Survivor Series
Lesnar vs Rock
Triple H vs Cena

Royal Rumble
Cena vs Lesnar
Rock vs Triple H

Wrestlemania
Lesnar vs HHH vs Cena vs Rock

That would be MONTHS of solid PPV buys and Arena sellouts IMO

Honestly, I don't think there is. But what about you?

There's a couple.

Reigns vs. Cena - I'd try this match at WM 32. By then, Reigns should be pretty over and this match could be a "passing of a torch" match like Brock vs. Rock at Summerslam 2002

Rock vs. Brock II - Speaking of Rock vs. Brock in the previous match, a rematch between the two would have one of the biggest sports entertainers facing one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, the mainstream appeal would be huge plus they're both big guys which draws.

Sting vs. Taker - The dream match many wanted to see.

Cena vs. Stone Cold - The biggest draw Austin never faced.

Batista vs. Cena vs. Brock - It is the Rock vs. Austin vs. Mankind match that never happened but in this case this would be of the Ruthless Aggression era. Three of the biggest stars in one ring.

Reigns vs Cena - they should hold off a couple of years
Cena vs Undertaker - they should totally due in Texas next year
Rock vs Brock - this would be huge
HHH vs Reigns - not as big as the 3 above but I think it could be built into something big

Honestly the first 3 are the only true mega mega matches I could think of that the WWE could go crazy on. They may not please the average fan who shits all over most of those guys but they could be built huge.

Next year in Texas if they did something like
Brock vs Rock
Taker vs Cena
Reigns vs Ambrose vs Rollins
I think it could be huge.

Brock Lesnar Vs Kurt Angle... Angle was the only guy u thought had the upper hand over Brock Lesnar in their feuds... Also the only guy Brock ever "feared" in his WWE career.

While not a bad idea, your looking to the past. It is time for the future...why in the hell would you have 4 legends (mainly part-timers) in the main event for the world title. Where does up-and-comers like Reigns,Ambrose,Bryan,Rollins,Sheamus,Wyatt,Ziggler(veteran technically),Rusev fit in that. Are they suppose to take a backseat for some sort of Ruthless Aggression noglasic takeover. No offense but no. Also the fact that Rock won't do four matches in that time. He barely can clear his schedule to do one, let alone 4. IMO there should only be one match where it's two legends in a WrestleMania 32 main event. It should either be Sting/Undertaker,Rock/Orton, or Cena/Austin, and none for the title. Only one possible at this point is Rock/Orton. So I would have Reigns/Cena, Bryan/Wyatt for the title, Triple H/Seth Rollins, and Rock/Orton as the main events.

I think the reason why we don't get many of these anymore is because heel/face turns happen too quickly. Remember when a good heel or face fun would last around 5 years? That time is used to ideally build up said star, so when everything aligns and one is heel and another is face- with the belt on the line, it suddenly is a big deal.

I also wonder if maybe these matches happen too often on Raw and Smackdown. 'Reigns Vs Rollins' would be an epic feud, but they've had like...three, four matches against each-other? That waters down making a major PPV event out of it.

What could be built into a Mega Match? 'Lesnar Vs Bryan'. Maybe 'Lesnar Vs Orton'. I haven't seen those.
