I think the trilogy as a whole is very good. It isn't on the level of the original Star Wars trilogy or LOTR buts its a very underrated trilogy

Remember, Old Man Peabody blasted one of the pines with a shotgun while firing at Marty? Had Marty not gone back to 1955, both pines would still have existed.

Actually, Marty ran over one of the pines with the Time Machine. Then Old Man Peabody blew up his mailbox with the shotgun screaming "You bastard! You killed my pine!"
The only reason I noticed the sign was because someone pointed it out to me as a kid when we were watching it. Pretty funny.This is a very underrated trilogy. Though the 2nd film gets a lot of crap, it doesn't take away from how well the whole story comes together.
On a side note, how bad would it have been if they kept Eric Stoltz instead of Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly?
I have a confession. I like BTTF Part II better than Part III, and it's not even close. The gags from having Marty go back to the same week that he went back to originally, having to avoid himself is one of my favorite elements to the entire trilogy. I love the fact that half of it takes place simultaneously to BTTF.

Because it deals with time travel, the trilogy has a lot of loose ends, but this one has always bothered me. So, Marty goes back to 1955 in BTTF 1 and helps his parents get together. Since Marty played such an integral role in getting the McFlys hooked up, don't you think they would notice that their son, 1985 Marty, looks a hell of a lot like that Marty guy that they knew back in high school?
Great movies. I've probably seen each of them at least a dozen times.

When Marty returns from 1955 to 1985 shouldn't there be an alternate Marty in his place? If not and the original Marty does just slip into the new 1985 does that mean he wouldn't have any memories of the first 17 years of his life? I imagine that could make for some awkward moments.

This isn't a plot hole at all. It is entirely reasonable to expect both George and Lorraine McFly to have completely forgotten the face of someone they only knew for a single week, 30 years prior.

What I don't get about the third part: wouldn't there be 2 DeLoreans in 1885?
There's the DeLorean Marty comes back in and the DeLorean that Doc buried there. Why not go get that one? Am I missing something or is that a big plot hole?

OK.
in that case, I would say that there was an alternate Marty, at least for a few minutes. The original 1985 Marty, when coming back to 1985 from 1955, set the timer a few minutes early, so that he could try to save Doc. So, for the period of time after Marty returned from 1955 until the time Marty left for 1955, there were two Martys in existence. The returned Marty witnessed himself going back in time, afterall.
However, and I suspect this is what you were really getting at...since Original Marty left Twin Pines mall, not Lone Pine Mall as the other Marty did, there would be two sets of memories, with original Marty remembering it as Twin Pines, and thus noticing the change, and the other remembering it as Lone Pine.
Original Marty clearly remembers the original timeline, where his family is lower middle class, his brother Dave works at BK instead of an office, etc, as he acts shocked when he returns home to see the changes. Original Marty didn't return to original 1985, he returned to an alternate reality 1985, created by his own changes to the timeline. If you think about it, he doesn't belong there, any more than he belonged in the Grey's Sports Almanac altered 1985 from Part II. It's just as wrong.
But what happens to the 2nd Marty? The one that grew up in the alternate timeline, already altered by the original Marty? He is fine...probably. We know from BTTF 2 that every change made to the past creates an alternative timeline. So, he would simply continue to exist in whatever timeline was created branching off of his when he returned to his 1985.

If you google Back to the Future plot holes, it will finish filling out the bar for you because there's so many websites with lists of plotholes. Pretty much unavoidable in a movie based around time travel.
