The "Superbowl Curse".
And when I say it's worse than the Madden curse, I mean that this curse affects entire teams, while the Madden curse only affects individual players.
By Superbowl Curse, I mean the following: whichever team hosts the Superbowl has a cursed season. While always holding true to a certain extent, this curse has been especially active and detrimental the past few years.
First off, never in history has a team played a home-game Superbowl. Meaning, in other words, that never has a team had a Superbowl apperance in its own stadium. Thus, if your team's stadium has been scheduled to host a season's Superbowl, said team didn't get to it and never has been able to do so. Cursed.
Now, maybe cursed is too strong just on this fact alone. But let's look further into how Superbowl-hosting teams have been cursed just in the past few years:
2010 Season (host city/team- Dallas Cowboys), how were they cursed? The 2010 season was horrendous for Tony Romo and the Cowboys, as Jerry Jones placed a lot of pressure on his team. After a trying half-season in which they went 1-7 and saw the firing of Wade Phillips, Tony Romo broke his collarbone and endured season-ending surgery, effectively ending the team's playoff hopes. Not to mention Dez Bryant was placed on IR too. They were a mess for the rest of the season. It never looked very good for them. (6-10, no playoffs)
2011 Season (host city/team- Indianapolis Colts), how were they cursed? We all remember the Peyton Manning fiasco and how that burned their entire season. Colts fans had to SUFFER through the likes of Kerry Collins, Painter, Orlovsky, and a terrible season. Star player and MVP was declared out before the season even started. (2-14, no playoffs)
2012 Season (host city/team- New Orleans Saints), how were they cursed? Well, the whole Bounty Scandal and the now-developing Eavesdropping scandal. And, of course, all of the crippling fines/suspensions/punishments coming with the scandals. Besides the fact that numerous players will be suspended (yet to be determined), HC Sean Payton's gone for the season (plus other coaches). Oh, and Brees has yet to be signed long-term. Not shaping up to be a good season for the Saints to say the very least. (?-?, playoffs?)
I think this oft-ignored Superbowl Curse is actually much worse than the Madden Curse.
