Amtrak Is Crazy

So my grandmother is taking a train from Cincinnati to Seattle to see her son. I've tried to get her to fly but she has issues with planes. The price for her (senior discounted) round trip is just under $500. She wanted to know about a sleeper car, which is basically a fold out bed on her own. The price for that on top of the ticket: $635. Who in the world would pay that much extra for a bed?

AMTRAK has been this way since the economy fell. Plus the Empire Builder is expensive and top of the line [express that generally runs to/from Seattle through Glacier National.]

I know of very few hotels that run over 600 bucks a night. A few yes, but not most of them.

She's fine with the regular train seat. She laughed at the idea of paying the extra though.

I made the same mistake too. Her ticket is 490. I said on the phone with Amtrak "so it would be $145 extra?" I was quickly corrected. Her total bill for one way would be over $1100.

On the plus side, the scenic views should be amazing. I wish I had the money to travel like that.
