I hated the original AiW, I hate Tim Burton, and therefore I will hate the film. He destroyed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Burton's may have been closer to the book, but the original is better in almost every way. Are you going to tell me that Depp didn't play the Mad Hatter character very similar to his Wonka? People call him the best character actor of all time, and yet no matter how different the characters are meant to be they still seem like Johnny Depp acting weird.

Oh really. Need I point out the missing scene where Charlie drinks the gas drink and almost dies? And then loses out on the factory in the end? Is it in the original? Yes.
Does it ignore the fact that there was a sequel? Yes
Charlie didn't drink the Fizzy Lifting Drink in the book. It was only mentioned. And he didn't lose the factory in the book either.
I think his Wonka was great. Reread the book. Wonka is messed up.

I just bought the entire Roald Dahl works last Wed. Waiting for it to arrive
From what I remember, the only bits missing in the new movie are the Square Candies That Look Round and the lickable wallpaper. Oh, and the ending is changed.

I'm with you on most of this. As of late, his acting has been confusing to me. Aside from his Dillinger, which I thought was awesome, I just don't get what the hell he's doing. That includes his characterization of Sweeney, which was a mess, and this is coming from a very devoted Sondheim fan (Sweeney is one of my favourite musicals of all-time) AND a fan of Depp.
I would argue though that his best character work, and some of the best acting work of his career, is as Jack Sparrow.

Dillinger was mildly disappointing but still enjoyable. His work as Sparrow is good, but I think it set in motion the thought that all of his characters have to be over the top and comical. WE understand that your playing this wacky character, but it's TOO hokey and he plays it for nothing but laughs and his personas come off as overly animated caricatures.
Wonka was supposed to be both over-the-top and comical, and mildly disturbing. He pulled it off very well. However, Wilder's Wonka was too loveable and that's the one everyone remembered. Therefore, Depp's Wonka gets hated upon.
I'm not very good at telling between good and bad when it comes to movie, so I enjoy Depp's work.

I loved Public Enemies so I'm pretty biased on that front, but I really did think he was a great fit for that part.
I think that his work as Sparrow is becoming a caricature of itself as the Pirates series progresses. There's this expectation that he HAS to play weird roles and has to be wacky all the time and it really fucks him over. People can't focus on what he really does anymore because his celebrity overwhelms his acting work and it's a shame. Same thing happens with Angelina Jolie... it doesn't matter what roles she does or what she plays, she's always looked at as Angelina as [insert character here] instead of the character first and foremost.

What are you taking about? Alice in Wonderland is one of the most meaningful books ever written. There's plenty of material to work with, as long as the resulting product is marketed towards adults, and not children.
