Mr. Artistic guy
Better Off This Way
Recently started a work experience placement organized by the job centre near me. It's in a fairly big toy store but I'm working the back in the warehouse, or putting out stock so it's all basically physical labour.
Like I said, it's chalked down to work experience, but really, that was mostly the first day. Since then I've been basically doing work for the store whilst learning nothing new as basically an unpaid worker. We, me and the other 9 people they've taken on at the same time under the name of work experience tend to work 6 hour shifts, but with no breaks. Yesterday, I was supposed to leave at 6 and ended up being kept to finish off a load until about half past. There's little or no organisation. I speak to a senior member of staff and they just put me on doing whatever they need doing at the time.
I'm about half way through now, with another 2 and a bit weeks left. Because of having no breaks, and partly because I'm a portly chap, I'm totally exhausted by the time I'm finished.
Now. All work experience done whilst on job seekers is purely voluntary. I could leave now no hassle. But I don't have the most decorated C.V.. I really just want to be able to put it down and maybe get a reference by the end of it. Should I tell the job centre about the malpractice going on and throw in the towel, or should I stick it out and then tell them, or should I not mention it at all for fear of being labelled a trouble maker.
Worst of all, there are two job openings at the end of the placement so I'm trying consciously to be good, but not great, at what I'm doing because to be honest, I don't want the flipping job, and I don't think many would blame me. I spoke to a less senior member of staff on the till a few days ago, a youngish girl, and she mentioned that she was working 10 and a half hours, and wasn't expecting a break.
I can appreciate I'm a liability with my relative lack of working experience. I wouldn't mind getting minimum wage as long as there's some two-way respect in the position.
I'm open for any considered opinions here guyzzzz.
