Advanced AI technology in games

Ferbian

Has Returned.
There's a lot of games that have an AI implementation in their games, such as Age of Empire where the computer is pretty balanced in game play, a sports game etc.

And then there's games that could really benefit from a more advanced implementation of the AI, I'm thinking a game like Football Manager, it has the interview possibility to answer preset questions by the game, something that could be put into a more advanced game play if they implemented the ability to answer the question with your own words, a text box so to say.

There's a lot of games that could benefit from this I would imagine, while there's also some that could fail miserably due to the advanced implementations that would follow.

So my question to you guys is the following:

  • Would you like advanced AI technology to be implemented into games?
  • What type of games would you like to see them implemented in?
  • Do you think it would benefit or hurt the majority of games with such an implementation?

One genre I would love to see a better AI in is First Person Shooters (FPS). This is up to and including Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

When I play FPS games, I generally play on Expert difficulty, or it's equivalent. That being said, I manage to complete most of them. However, it would be a lot easier and a whole better experience if the AI would actually do something useful. One example of this is Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare. I found myself stuck at parts that really would require a team to get through. However, your team are quite happy to stay far behind you and as soon as you have cleared the room, they will run in and tell you that the room is clear... Well, of course it fucking is! No thanks to you ***** anyway!

FPS games are not the only genre that need some updating but I think it is the most noticeable. Sports games could use a work-over in some cases too. I am thinking of Pro Evolution Soccer and UFC 2010 when I say that. Both of which are just too hard to defeat on the hardest difficulty. Now, don't get me wrong, I win on expert at UFC a lot of the time but it's not through the means that I would want to. I generally just stand and punch with the AI instead of playing the way I would like to.

AI is very likely to get more advanced but I would love for it just to be more of a "real" and balanced experience.
