I always liked how two of the basic principles of the United Nations was the right of areas to choose their own destiny (ie to secede) and also that all states had soverigncy over their own areas to make decisions like this (which normally blocks these states from ever splitting away from the country as a whole). Even in 1946 fence sitting was considered the place to be
