2009 King of the Ring

Pre-Show Stalwart
Usually, a midcarder wins KOTR to get him into main event status. My money's on someone like Matt Hardy or John Morrison. They need something like KOTR to get them into main event status. I don't know about all of you, but I think William Regal winning the KOTR tournament last year was pretty gay. It didn't really do much for him and he hasn't even shown his face since his Punk feud. If there's a king of the ring tournament this year, who do you all think should win it?

Although im not sure that I agree with it, i'd go with MVP. When I say im not sure if I agree with it, it's because I think he doesn't need it to be elevated to main event status. They've oubviously given him a mini push, interrupting Orton on Raw last week, and will obviously use him in the future. I think a guy like Shelton Benjamin could use more from a King of the ring win than MVP, but if the tournament continues this year, my pick to win is MVP

Shelton Benjamin.

What would be better for the Gold Standard, than to wear a Golden Crown???

It would give him a new gimmick. He'd finally be involved in a good storyline.

It looks like they're already giving Morrison a push on Smackdown from reading the Spoilers.

I think winning the King of the Ring would be a huge deal for Shelton Benjamin. Morrison doesn't really need to win it to get over.

You could say that Regal didn't do anything after winning King of the Ring, but he did when the Intercontinental Title, and he was in a really good feud with CM Punk.

So yeah, I'd definitely give it to Shelton.

A few guys could really benefit from winning it this year. My top three picks would be Shelton, Matt Hardy and The Miz. The reason i didn't mention MVP or Morrison is because i think they (along with CM Punk) will get their chance sometime this year without the KOTR.

Shelton could really add a win in KOTR to his gimmick. King Benjamin, the gold standard. I think he could really work this angle well and could very well be elevated to the ME if used correctly. He's got a lot of talent but could really do with adding something extra to his gimmick.

Matt Hardy's new heel character would really suit a KOTR win. He could use it to add to his cockiness and personality. A win for Hardy would make it a bit more believable that he should be taken as a threat to the main eventers and would explain a main event push for him.

The Miz, he could play off this beautifully. If he were to win the KOTR tourny can you imagine his promo's. I think they would be funny as fuck and he'd do really well. But the problem with Miz is if he won i could see him remaining as a top mid card wrestler even with the KOTR title. With Benjamin and Hardy i can see it elevating them to ME status where as with Miz i can see him using it to dominate the mid card but never moving to the ME scene.

So yeah...

There are a few mid-carders that I would consider: Kofi Kingston, John Morrison, Matt Hardy...Hell, even Big Show (Hypothetically). But the guy that really stans out to me is...the one, the only...

MR.KENNEDY...KEN-NE-DY

Anyone else for ken kennedy?

I will agree and say Kennedy. Hes great, great mic skills, ring skills, and he has the look. But, he also has "Stevie Richards Syndrome." The man cannot stay healthy long enough to have a decent program.

Does Shelton need it? They like him but they don't love him, that's not changing as long as there are better-liked people on the roster. If he wins it what does it do for him? He was the US champion for nearly a year and got matches with Undertaker and Triple H, he won't go beyond that until bigger guys start retiring and he moves up the power rankings.

As for who WILL win it... Matt Hardy or MVP (he DOES need it, he isn't main event talent yet, anyone can challenge the champion for one night, he isn't going to headline PPV's anytime soon either). I would LOVE it if Morrison won it, I worship the guy but I doubt they'd pull the trigger on it, I think they're trying to craft him out as a tweener, booed against the big faces, cheered against the heels.

You know what I wish they'd do with the KOTR? I wish they'd make it a stipulation where the only eligible competitors are those who have yet to have held a wold title and make it so that the winner gets a title shot at a ppv in the future. I wouldn't make it a money in the bank like clause. I'd make it to where the date of the said title match is already determined in advance. I'd also put the KOTR back on ppv and make it seem legit once again. As for the winner I'd go with either Shelton Benjamin or Christian (it depends of whether you consider the current ECW title a wold title or not)

I understand the logic of picking an upper midcarder who needs the boost like Shelton Benjamin. But I think that KotR can basically be like MitB where winning is just the final boost. I love Benjamin but KotR wouldn't give him that final boost. The WWE needs to take him much more seriously as a main event threat before KotR will finish the job. Benjamin is my pick for 2010 KotR.

This year is needs to be Morrison or MVP. A few big wins over a few big heels and the fans will be totally behind either of them. Their brands will need them in the coming year.

I think that Mr.Kennedy should win it he should makes his return win the tournament and that will put him back in the spotlight again he has everything it takes to be a main eventer anyhow,They need to start pushing people like him, shelton, morrison and matt hardy because they need more main event stars soon undertaker will be gone and hbk and there's not many other big names they have cena sucks ass, everyone is tired of HHH and batista is horrible so there's not many left after that besides orton, edge and jericho and if they were smart enough they should pick up kurt angle when his contract ends this year with Tna

i think they should give the KOTR to an already established name. they need to make the roster want to win it. Have Edge vs Triple H in the final, that way the winner will be a 2-time KOTR. Or give it to Orton or Cena. That's the only thing they really need left in their career, they've won the RR, world titles, and have won main events at Wrestlemania. But haven't become King. If they can give it to Booker, they can give it to one of them. Or hell, even Kane wouldn't be a bad idea. King Kane, lol. I wouldn't mind seeing Swagger win it either.

Who even cares about the King of the Ring anymore. Since they took it away from PPV it has lost its alure and importance. The only way that a top card player would want in it is if its on PPV. Why not put it on PPV and have both semis and finals on PPV and have Jericho win it. If it is going to stay on regular TV a midcarder like Swagger, Miz, Kofi (only one person mentioned him so far), or even Kendrik (I dont like him but WWE does for some strange reason).... personally let it be Santina I mean Santino. Santino needs to win one match sometime doesnt he????

It would have to go to someone whose gimmick would fit the role of King of the Ring. The best example I have read in this thread is Matt Hardy. He is impressing me in his role of a heel and having a King of the Ring to brag about would add to his character. He could even face Jeff in the final allowing them to see if they can wrestle a singles match well together with it being on free tv.

As for a Main Event star winning it, it would be a waste. If HHH won King of the Ring it would do nothing for him, same with Edge. It is for the midcarders to step up and shine. It has always been that way. The tournament should not have the top brass in it, with maybe, as I mentioned, Jeff Hardy participating as the biggest star in it.

No No NO, does Edge, Orton, Cena, or HHH need any more rubs jesus anyone but those guys. The tournament will probably be on RAW so it will got to Matt Hardy or someone who vince likes who would probably need it more to get over the Miz

I like this idea, but there are a few changes I would like to make.

I do agree to make it a Pay Per View again.

First I would start the tournament with 64 competitors, none of whom have a Title currently. I’m sure the WWE can grab some Superstars not on the current roster for fill-ins or even surprise us with having some of them advance to the 2nd or 3rd round or even the Finals (RVD anyone). Continuing on, I would have the first three rounds (56 matches) on Raw, ECW, and Smackdown (Superstars, maybe, but I rather not) for a whole month.

Then, at the KOTR PPV, we would have the last 7 matches, Quarter – Finals to the Finals with maybe 3 more non – Tournament matches. As of right now, I’d go with Rey Mysterio vs. Charlie Haas w/ Shelton Benjamin for the Intercontinental Title to start the show and M.V.P. vs. Ted DiBiase w/ Cody Rhodes for the United States Title after the Quarter – Finals and for the 2nd Main Event of the night, after the Semi – Finals, I would go with ECW Champion, Christian, World Champion Edge, and WWE Champion Randy Orton vs. Tommy Dreamer, Jeff Hardy and Batista (talk about contrast in styles!!). This way, the Champs are on the show, but the focus wouldn’t be on the Titles instead of the KOTR.

I don’t have a pick for the KOTR winner, but it would sure be a great show. Making the tournament this big would give the Crown a lot more importance than the way it was done in 2006 and 2008.

First off I'd like to address the William Regal debacle at last year's KOTR...It was an absolute joke! I can almost understand why they would pick Regal, at least one reason why. It's really the only reason I can think of though and it's so utterly simple and dumb that it shouldn'e have made it to the table. His character, being English and arrogant and thinking he is truly regal and above evrybody else would theoretically fit with the King gimmick but thats about the only thing I can think of...other than that there was no reason he should have gotten any push or had the chance to become anything other than a mid carder.

Anyways...getting back to the topic, I would have a couple picks to win the KOTR this yr and get a push into the main event. John Morrison is a great natural athlete, good gimmick, great look, good ring skills, good worker, and he is the type of arrogant, cocky personality that could definitely pull off wearing the crown. This guy is gonna be a top guy for years to come. Someone just needs to give him a rub and creative needs to come up with a good fued and story to cement his spot and I think anyone who isn't already a believer will become one.

Mr. Kennedy!!! Kennedy!!! I am so disappointed that he has had such shitty luck since he debuted. He has such a huge upside and hasn't had the time to show what he can truly do. The wrestling community was so big on this guy when he first came to the WWE and there was a huge buzz surrounding him, rightfully so. I have heard people bashing him, saying he is injury prone and will keep getting injured and will have a short lived career...I say give him a chance! Could it be that he just had a string of shitty luck? It can happen to anyone, it just depends on the situation. He is money on the stick, good in the ring, has a good look, awesome personality, and can work with just about anyone. He could easily be the King of WWE. Once again, and I think it is important to have this quality when talking about being the king of the ring, he is cocky as hell. It is not a deal breaker if you aren't arrogant but it certainly helps. I just see him soaking it up to the fullest and rubbing it in everyones face if he were to win. The young guys need to be moved into better positions all around and for me he is a front runner to be in the main event.

IMO I think they should use the KOTR to elevate talent that has had a hard time getting over, guys like Shelton, Morrison, Kennedy, guys who could use the chance to get elevated to the next stage of their careers, the Miz wouldnt benefit at all from the KOTR rub at all.

Think about it Kennedy has been jerking the Main event and they could use the KOTR to give the guy a proper push, a way to make kennedy into something other then a guy who keeps getting injured.

Morrision could use it to elevate himself to the next level, he has been jerking the upper midcard for quite some time since winning the ECW championship, and then getting suspended due to the whole pharmacy scandale which he and Kennedy where involved in at one point.

Shelton would be a prime candidate IMO, the wwe seems to not know what to do with the self proclaimed gold standard, he really had a good year last year with both the US title and the championship scramble in which he became a preliminary champion and was booked very strong against triple H, he has been bordeline main event midcard for years , this year should be his chance to shine, he was my main contender to win the MITB case but they have yet to pull the trigger on this guy.

The Brian Kendrick, this guy was booked upper midcard borderline main event, he has a good look, a great bodyguard that shut his mouth and did his job in Jackson, and also was a preliminary champion in the scramble match and lasted longer then every in that match, he was blown off course and became a jobber to the stars on smackdown, why not give him the chance to be elevated, i loved the whole well red kurk cobain type gimmick that they gave him, he deserves better promo time then guys like the Miz imo.

There are a number of talent here that needs the KOTR rub, but they need to actually help them elevate to the next stage otherwise it will just make the win look pointless, I do like some of the ideas of leading the win to a title match that could really help the winner elevate to main event, but the issue standing would be that guys who are already established will get the push and midcarders such as these three will lose out!

KING KOFI

i know it wont happen, not now at least. but i want to see Kofi Kingston's angle revamped and i think this is the way to do it. he wouldnt necessarily have to go heel but that does usually come after that and he is definitely a good wrestler coming up in the ranks. he's definitley in need of a style makeover so im pushin for the kof'ster

Shelton Benjamin will NEVER be a credible main eventer, he has proven time and time again that he cannot get himself over. It would be a waste to have him win the KOTR. It should be a guy who is almost there, the previously mentioned Morrison, Matt Hardy and Kennedy would be good, although Kennedy's injury problems will likely cause the booking crew to hold him back until he proves that he can handle it.

I would love to see Matt, Jeff or Kennedy win the KoTR as they all need the final push to legititmatly break the glass ceiling. Yes i know Jeff has won the big one but that was to shock us and to change Matt to a credible heel.

It would work very well with matts current gimmick and make him an actuall threat to the top faces, maybe not cena or trips, but the others most definatly.

If Kennedy was to win it and stay healty for a year i can see him being a world champion to close the year.

I'd go with Miz or Kendrick for this year. Morrison looks like he's going to be pushed in the main event light on SmackDown! and Matt seems poised to do something on Raw now. Either guy could use it to just splash into the mid card and get that exposure. I think Kendrick would be the better fit of the two only because I think is gimmick needs a little work.

Not a lot because I love the cockiness that he shows, but Miz doesn't need it as much I guess. Just hopefully this KOTR will be better than Regals.

Shelton needs to learn how to use a microphone before I'd ever give him this crown. You have to be the total package to be top tier, not just In-Ring Gold. He needs to hook up with one of the go-to guys and really start bringing his new, stalking like persona out in his promos. I love watching him stalk someone for the complete shot, and how he always looks like he's ready to pounce like a jungle cat, but if he can't make you respect him by the words he says? Then he's STILL not ready to get any major chance at the gold. Maybe at a Raw or Smackdown taping, but never at a PPV.

My nod would go to John Morrison or MVP, as they CAN use a microphone, although John's weaker in that area than MVP. But what I really hope they do, is not have Punk cash in the MiTB until after the KoR, and for him to use the KoR as the basis of his heel turn. It's coming, I can tell you that much.

My personal choice would be Cody Rhodes because I think winning a tournament like that would instanly assist in elevating him to another level. But being involved with Legacy will have to do for now I would say.

But in reality it will be someone like Matt Hardy, Miz, MVP or Shelton Benjamin...maybe even Swagger, who knows? it's hard to predict 'cos there are so many who deserve it atm...
