I saw the poll on the front page and thought it would be something good for us to discuss.

I just pulled the homepage poll over here so make some interesting cases for who you really feel should be number 1 this year.

I wanted to put a someone on here that i feel had a very good year but was left off the poll for whatever reason.

Jeff Hardy.I'll make my case later.

So i pulled off who was last (batista)

But lets get this going.

Feel free to rank a top 10 if you desire as well.

Edge has dominated Smackdown all year. He retired The Undertaker, left Batista high and dry, formed a great stable of wrestlers in La Familia, Cashed in Money in the Bank, Almost was married to the General Manager of Smackdown, and has beat down all his opponents. No one has been that dominate in the WWE this year, not Cena, who has yet to taste gold, Triple H, Who has been champion, but not faced enough challenges, not Batista who is missing a belt, not Hardy who has been suspended for 2 months. The only competition would of course be Santino Marella, but sinch he is young, ill give him another year to become a champion in 2009.

Now i said id make a case for Jeff Hardy so here it is. Let it be known that he isn't my pick. But i think he had the second best year and deserves to be in the discussion.

I'm not saying the man has all the talent to be #1, so dont get me wrong there. I know he's not the most gifted athlete or most technical guy out there but you can't argue at all with the success he had this year. He had one of the most memorable hot streaks in recent years. Now he screwed himself over on the suspension, that goes without saying. If he hadn't got that suspension then he might even be holding the title right now. But i dont feel like gettin into alot of what ifs right now. Anyways, I still feel that he had the second best year in all of wresting in 2008, and i think he generally deserves to be in the talks.

But i truly feel that this years number 1 should be Randy Orton. Now alot of people will say that he only got that title out of default from when Cena got injured, but there were other choices. Triple H was active and could have easily been given the strap but i guess orton had finally paid his dues. Now i'm a huge mark on this guy and the way he has mastered his character and i think we'll be seeing alot more of him soon. I honestly think he has a better grasp on his character than anyone out there barring the undertaker. The cocky arrogant heel just fits him and his mannerisms coupled with his slow promo delivery make him golden in and out of the ring. I think the Age of Orton is just beginning.

That being said here's my top 5
1. Orton
2. Jeff Hardy
3. Edge
4. Kurt Angle
5. Triple H

first off i do agree with ur thoughts on hardy, i think had he not screwed himself over with that suspension he could of easily been on this list because i do believe he would of been in cm punks postion right now with the MITB win and have a title right now.

Saying that i still dont think he would of come close to the year that edge had overall with "banishing" the undertaker, creating a stable in la familia, destroying batista time after time, truely using his title the "ultimate opportunist" throughout the year, his tlc match with the undertaker was unbelievable and he has been the greatest heel the wwe has had this whole year no doubt about it.

creating a great stable in la familia,

A Great Stable? Are ya'll high?

La Familia is a terrible excuse for what a stable should be. Now let me clear this up, i'm not taking anything at all from edge. Edge has been amazing this year. But how in the hell do people think la familia is anything above a sub par attempt to bring back stables that failed miserably. All they bring to the table is the fact that everyone in that stable had absolutely nothing going or them so they go put into a stable for the sake of creative.

Think about it. The Majors had grown stale, Chavo had nothing going for him at the time, and who in the hell had the idea of bringing in a useless bodyguard waste of space like bam neely, who has had pretty much zero effect on chavo's matches. isnt the point of a bodyguard for a heel to help you cheat and win? All he does is turn around and yell at the fans everytime that chavo is getting pinned. its pathetic.

Edge carried that stable.

They're useless.

The past year has been quite a successful one for the top heels in the business.
With Edge being on top of Smackdown for the year, save his injury hiatus. Orton having a very succcessful run with the strap, where he beat most of the top babyfaces on RAW and Kurt Angle holding the strap in TNA for a good time aswell.
Jeff got the push he deserved... including a clean pinfall over HHH in a hyped PPV bout for a shot at the title, but unfortunately let it all slip.
HHH did win the title twice (once was a blink and you'll miss it affair ofcourse) but apart from that his impact in the 'WWE universe' wasn't that major this year.
Batista and Cena didn't reach the heights they have in previous years, except maybe for Cena winning the Royal Rumble... but it wasn't the most memorable one in recent memory
Taker was up there with some great matches, title runs and rivalry... but not on top due to his 'banishment'
HBK was another one with a relatively 'quiet' year for his standards... had some very entertaining rivalries and in my opinion was in the best straight wrestling match of the year so far against the Nature Boy at Wrestlemania (closely followed by Taker v Edge at the same 'sports entertainment spectacular'), but again not quite there.
But like others i would have to agree that the Rated R Superstar was on top this year (even though he hasn't been very 'R-rated' apart from TLC)... Smackdown just completely revolved around him... and the fans just love to hate him. With 3 WHC reigns, being the head of the biggest stable in a while (wasn't a great one though haha... really just a way to further the other awful thing on SD! being the edge & vickie storyline) and an entertaining rivalry with the phenom... you'd have to say thats a pretty damn good year in anyones book.

OK, easy and quick to read rankings:
1- Edge
2- Orton
3- Angle
4- Taker
5- HBK or HHH, either really

And look out for Jericho in the coming year... looks like its building into a big one for Y2J

The number one spot is obviously between Edge and Orton, my top favorite wrestlers. I'm going with Orton, the guy was a beast this year (not saying Edge wasn't). If it hadn't been for his injury, there would have been a feud with him and HHH similar to Batista's feud with Edge before as the draft neared and ended. Edge has done two memorable things retired the Undertaker and ultimately squashed Batista as competition. Orton was made a champion twice for being awarded the title, lost it to HHH, then regained it all on the same day. Were as Edge lost his own WM streak and belt to Taker, then months later won gold back. Orton's fought the likes of HHH, HBK, Y2J, Hardy, Cena, Cena & HHH and still kept his gold. Edge faced Rey, then same two opponents to death to keep his strap. Orton finally lost the strap in a Fatal Four Way between him, JBL, HHH and Cena as opposed to Edge losing to the RAW new comer, CM Punk cashing in his MITB on him after Batista got retribution. After Edge lost his title, there wasn't much he could do but go after the new champion, which he has yet to show any signs of being over him. Orton on the other hand had obvious signs of being over, as he has beaten HHH for the title before.

Rankings:
1. Randy Orton
2. Edge
3. Kurt Angle
4. Triple H
5. Jeff Hardy

And um... Orton already has the #1 spot of the PWI 500 from what I've read.

ok i am alittle confused are we doing our top 5 for what we think of 2007 or isa this 2008 meaning this year so far...even thou the year isnt even over yet ?
well in any case here is my list top 5 for this year so far 2008.

I would not include jeff hardy because he missed a little time due to his suspension and also i feel the red hot jeff hardy was late 07, in 08 since his rumble title match he hasnt impressed me much

1.Edge
2.Randy Orton
3.Undertaker
4.Triple H
5.Chris Jericho

that is my top 5. :flair:

Well, PWI has Randy Orton on the cover, so that means he's number one this year. Personally, I think it's a daring yet fitting choice. Heels very rarely reach #1. Then again, I don't think any heel has dominated a year in recent memory the way Randy Orton did this past year. PWI "year" is like July 2007- July 2008. In that time span, Randy Orton, after coming off a roll, taking out HBK and RVD, beat the hell out of Dusty Rhodes, gave Cody Rhodes a nice little RAW debut, had a great fued with John Cena, became WWE Champion (twice, technicnally), and had intense matches and fueds with Cena, HHH, Chris Jericho, Jeff Hardy, and Shawn Michaels. He was a great heel champion. Now, runner up is a pretty wide open field. You have Edge, who was arguably just as good as Orton, only he was on a lesser show. HHH, who took up the spot of "Top Face" when John Cena was injured, and then never gave that spot up. Cena, who despite missing four months, had a great year, won the Royal Rumble as pretty much "THE" surprise entrant of all time, headlined WM for the fourth year in a row, and had some great matches with Orton, JBL, and had the best match of the year so far with HHH at NOC. Undertaker, who had a great fued with Batista, fantastic fued with Edge, Main Evented WM, won the World Heavyweight Championship at WM, and competed in a fantastic TLC match, the best in a long time. So, here's my top 10 for 2008:

1.Randy Orton
2.Edge
3.HHH
4.Undertaker
5.John Cena
6.Kurt Angle
7.Jeff Hardy
8.Chris Jericho
9.Batista
10.Samoa Joe

I don't get it do you guys mean 2007 or 2007 to present day? Because alot of the guys listed were hurt in 2007. But if i had to choose it would be Edge. Edge has stepped up to the plate and has carried Smackdown ( along with Undertaker) on his shoulders. He is what every heel needs to try and be. He is the most hated man in this business and plays the crazy heel role excellent. Besides him Taker, and MVP they were the only reason i watched smackdown until the draft. We all have to admit that Edge has done a great job so far until Hunter was drafted over. This is why i voted for him.

Since the PWI 500 comes out in August, I would guess it goes from August 2007- August 2008...Who had the best year in that timeframe...Without a doubt, it was Edge for me...Orton is second and nobody else really came close after that.

in my opinion edge had the best year, but i sorta see why orton was placed as number 1. im guessing wrestlemania had something to do with it. orton managed to come out on top on the biggest card of the year BUT edge had the higher priority match and definitely had the better wrestling match. also, when edge won the title from taker using MITB he got injured and was out for a couple months. meanwhile, orton's reign was longer since he got the title in october and edge got it in december. and then orton lost it later and edge lost the title at wm. i know when PWI does these lists they consider the win-loss record very carefully, and they also consider the opponents. edge was fighting: taker, batista, and misterio. they are definitely top superstars, but orton was beating hardy, trips, michaels, y2j, and cena.

the reason why i would put edge over is i think he PERFORMED better. meaning, he always gave great promos. he used his wits and decided to woo the general manager, even going so far as to propose to her. he then created a stable using random ppl around him and used them to his advantage. so while edge was basically dominating SD, orton was barely squeaking by and DQ'ing himself in ppv matches. a champion shouldnt dq himself ever, at least find a better way to cheat and keep the title. edge then won the title again in a tlc match while orton was injured. he also managed to retire taker in the same match and only lost his title b/c he was ambushed.

My personal opinion he has had one of the best WWE championship runs in WWE history and was having the best matches up until his injury.

But im not here to gloat about him

I would like to hear your take on the award

I think that Edge should have been #1. With the Undertaker always coming in and out and the difference in talent that there was between raw and smackdown before the draft I think that Edge carried smackdown and the heat on him is more then I've seen on most guys.

Edge definitely has to be #1. This guy's dominated an entire show virtually by himself for a year, has won three world titles, was given his own stable, pushed two no-name tag team wrestlers into no-heat tag team champions, was trusted with the main event of WrestleMania, has been able to get the audience to boo him to a near inaudible level damn near every time he's out here (though Vickie did get a higher noise level than he did, it seems)...the list goes on and on.

No question that it should be Edge, although Orton did have a very productive year. I'd probably put him at the number two spot, with Undertaker being number three, and if it weren't for his suspension, I think Hardy by now would've easily been able to clinch the fourth spot on it, as he'd have won not only the Money in the Bank, but presumably the World Heavyweight Championship as well.

There's a lot of Indy guys who had great years, who will without a doubt be part of the top ten.

For example, in last years rankings, Mistico was ranked THIRD.

NUMBER THREE.

IN THE WORLD.

Doesn't that count for something, shouldn't we look past our WWE/TNA-obsessed selfs (spelling?) and acknoledge (spelling?) some of these guys?

shouldn't we look past our WWE/TNA-obsessed selfs (spelling?) and acknoledge (spelling?) some of these guys?

Nope... I won't look past my WWE/TNA-obsessed self to acknowledge an indy worker, unless they make it into at least ROH or one of WWE's developmental farms.

Anyways, I'm happy for Orton. I think he deserved it more than Edge, others will disagree... aww well. He has it, don't hate... appreciate. At least Cena didn't get it again this year.

As for second place, it should obviously be Edge, he's been on the biggest roll of his career until late. Having the Undertaker reinstated... and facing him at Summerslam, I pity Edge.

I realy didn't think that Randy Orton would win it seeing that a face usualy wins it. Just like last year when John Cena won it over Kurt Angle who i personaly think should have won it. With that said i think Orton deserves it he held the WWE title for 6 months and was in the mainevent picture all year long. The only person that comes close to Ortons year is Edge and he was hurt for around 5 months so that disqualifies him from it.

Ever since finally breaking that glass ceiling of mine and finally becoming a fan of Edge, it shouldn't be anyone but him. He deserves it a bit more than Orton. But Orton and Edge are as close as you can get. Can't remember a time when I was more indecisive about who to pick as the best guy of a year.

This could have been Jeff Hardys year if he was never suspended I think 2008 could have been the year of Hardy. He was getting a massive push and could have won MITB. I think Edge or Randy would qualify as the wrestler of the year. Both were dominated on their respective brand(while not injured). I think Orton was booked a little better since he didnt come off as scared and weak as Edge but both men had a great "2008".
