12-9-13: The WWE Slammy Awards

Jack-Hammer

YOU WILL RESPECT MY AUTHORITAH!!!!
It's that time of year again. Some people look forward to it and some hate it with a passion. Next week's episode of Raw, which is also the go home Raw to TLC, will see the return of the Slammy Awards.

Personally, I tend to fall more into the latter category since the Slammy Awards mean nothing, the show itself features a lot of lousy award presentation segments, there's usually some extremely lame comedy involved and there way too many joke Slammy categories to further reinforce the notion of just how little they mean. All that put together makes so much the show feel little more than waste of time. I'd rather see a ton of final hype for TLC, some good promo segments and wrestling matches. You know, the stuff that 99% of fans actually do care about seeing.

With that said, I'm more hopeful than I normally am regarding the Slammy Awards as there aren't very many joking categories. The list of awards this year is as follows:

Superstar of the Year
Extreme Moment of the Year
Insult of the Year
Double-Cross of the Year
This is Awesome! Moment of the Year
"Total Diva" of the Year
LOL! Moment of the Year
Match of the Year

Aside from the LOL! Moment of the Year Slammy, there really aren't any lame comedy awards. There are no "Facial Hair of the Year" or "Kiss of the Year" or "Best Dancer of the Year" or "#Trending Now of the Year" crap going on. For the most part, If you take out the laugh out loud award, the category titles sound pretty legit.

Superstar of the Year will probably be either Cena, Orton or Bryan

Extreme Moment of the Year is pretty up in the air. It could be what's replacing the "Holy $#!+ Move of the Year" or the "OMG Moment of the Year" category.

Insult of the Year, off the top of my head, might go to Punk for referring to Kane as "The Big Red Ass-Kisser." Either that or something that Cena & Rock said to each other earlier in the year.

Double-Cross of the Year will go to either Triple H for screwing Bryan at SummerSlam or Shawn Michaels for screwing Bryan over at Hell in a Cell.

The This is Awesome! Moment of the Year might also be a replacement for either the move of the year or OMG moment.

The "Total Diva" of the Year will probably be Brie Bella in order to drive a wedge between her & Nikki. There was a tout segment that's up on various websites that show's a little dissention between them when Nikki asks why Brie tagged in Natalya rather than her in their match last night. If it was a legit award, it'd be AJ taking the trophy.

The LOL! Moment of the Year is anybody's guess. I'm personally leaning towards Bryan shaving off half of Wade Barrett's beard during the Corporate Makeover segment. Maybe it's just me, but the sound of the clippers buzzing against Barrett's face and Barrett flailing about trying to get away made me picture the scene in an old school cartoon. You know, the kind that actually had beloved characters and didn't have to resort to fart & puke jokes to be funny.

Match of the Year will probably go to Cena vs. Rock II, though it shouldn't. Bryan vs. Punk on the February 25th episode of Raw, Taker vs. Punk at WM 29, any number of matches involving The Shield, Cena vs. Bryan at SummerSlam, Bryan vs. Orton at NOC, etc. were all much better matches in my opinion.

I think this would have been better done in a week or two instead of on the build up show for the PPV, but with 3 hours they should be able to navigate the booking around it

Superstar of the Year
I imagine it will be Cena or Orton to continue the push towards the unification match.

Extreme Moment of the Year
Ryback spearing Cena through the set at Extreme Rules would get my vote.

Insult of the Year
AJ shredding the Total Divas should win.

Double-Cross of the Year
Heyman pushing Punk off the ladder would get my vote because it was an actual double cross as they were supposed to be friends.

This is Awesome! Moment of the Year
Dolph's cash-in. If not then Cesaro giving Khali the Big-swing.

"Total Diva" of the Year
If it only includes the reality Divas then I guess it will be one of the Bellas, if it includes them all then any result that isn't AJ winning will look phony and get booed.

LOL! Moment of the Year
I'm guessing Titus puking on people last week will win this.

Match of the Year
Should be Punk vs Lesnar or Punk vs Cena in my view, but will most likely be Rock vs Cena.

To be honest, I quite like the Slammys. Not just for the recaps and whatnot but we may see a few returning faces and who doesn't love that. Last year we got the New Age Outlaws. Tell me that isn't worth it.

Anyway, Superstar of the Year should probably be Cena but I reckon Orton gets it. Extreme moment of the year; perhaps, Ryback spearing Cena through the stage or indeed, Cena using the AA on top of the ambulance.

Double Cross must be HBK at Hell in a Cell. I have no idea about Insult of the Year. The Rock is always a good shout or something said to Bryan about looking like a goat. When Ziggler broke up with A.J, I'm pretty sure he said some insulting things so that is another option.

I like the Cesaro swing on Khali for the This is Awesome award. LOL! moment is pretty difficult to predict. Coulter/El Torito perhaps.

I'd imagine the Bella Twins share the Total Diva award and a big fuck you to A.J and Kaitlyn for actually being competent.

There are two outstanding options for Match of the Year. Lesnar vs Punk and Bryan vs Cena. Both were of the highest quality but I personally preferred Lesnar/Punk. However, I wouldn't be shocked to see Cena/Bryan or indeed Punk/Taker win. I would be ok with the latter if The Deadman makes an appearance but that won't happen.

Here are my idea of winners of slammy

Super star of year- orton, cena, or bryan

Total diva- Natalya
Side note-(why is there no actual diva of the year?)

Match of year- taker vs punk or lesnar vs punk

Extreme moment- nothing was extreme this year :(

This is awesome- ziggler cash in or cessaro swings or if you want match wise cessaro vs bryan

Lol moments- probably something santino did or rock singing about Vickie

Double cross- heyman is my bet but maybe hbk double cross bryan or hhh double cross bryan

Insult of year- I am praying for aj pipbomb but probably not gonna happen :(

Superstar Of The Year

John Cena should win it again this year. It's been a year of redemption for John - he won the Rumble match for a second time, won the WWE Title, came back from injury and won the World Title, becoming an 11 time world champion. He definitely deserves it. But if Cena doesn't take it then it'll probably be Daniel Bryan. I can't think of anyone that's been more popular than Bryan this year.

Extreme Moment of the Year

Ryback spearing Cena through the set at Extreme Rules or Cena hitting the AA on Ryback on top of the Ambulance as Eighties & MCMG mentioned. A couple of other extreme moments that spring to mind are Roman Reigns spearing Kane/Big Show/Goldust through the barricade in the timekeepers area and Big Show chokeslamming Orton through the announce table while standing on the steel steps. Or it might be something from the one of the two Ladder matches at the Money in the Bank PPV. My bet is Cena FU'ing Ryback on top of the Ambulance though.

Insult of the Year

I'd say Daniel Bryan on MizTV bringing up the japanese tradition of wrestlers slapping each other before their match and him refusing to slap Cena because "he wasn't a wrestler". I loved the way Cena sold that. Really stung Cena and set him off. That was intense.

Double-Cross of the Year

Like The Eighties said, Paul Heyman & CM Punk as they were actually friends and really close to each other.

This is Awesome! Moment of the Year

Dolph cashing-in, Cesaro swing on anybody, Roman Reigns eliminating 4 guys with spears at Survivor Series, The Wyatt Family's debut although I'm not sure if that counts towards this category. If it does, Wyatt's creepy debut. If not then Reigns eliminating Cody, Jimmy Uso, Goldust & Mysterio with spears at Survivors.

"Total Diva" of the Year

Don't give a shit but my guess is one of The Bellas.

LOL! Moment of the Year

I just watched Titus O' Neil puking on Youtube and it was funny as shit, so my guess is that. Or maybe R-Truth's reaction to The Kosher Butcher's finisher, "The Circumsion". Can't remember any more funny moments from this year.

EDIT: No wait, I just read the above post. I expect The Rock Concert to take this award now.

Match of the Year

A lot of good choices - Bryan vs Cena, Punk vs Cena, Lesnar vs Punk, and more. I don't think WWE will disappoint this year and go with something shit like most people expect them to, they did go with Taker vs. HHH last year afterall. I believe they will go with one of the first three. They'll probably go with Bryan/Cena.

1. Superstar of the Year: Cena, it's always Cena.

2. Extreme Moment of the Year: Beats me. Probably something Lesnar-related.

3. Insult of the Year: AJ has to win this.

4. Double-Cross of the Year: Considering they've done a double-cross on every single PPV since SS, they're all game. I'm guessing Triple H screwing Bryan at SS will win.

5. This is Awesome! Moment of the Year: This goes to Cesaro for sure. They're pushing that swing hard.

6. "Total Diva" of the Year: Who cares? Probably a Bella.

7. LOL! Moment of the Year: What a silly category. The biggest LOL was the booking of the WWE title in the past few months.

8. Match of the Year: I'm thinking that Cena/Punk will win. Either that or Cena/Bryan. Rock won't win it. They're done with him.

Superstar Of The Year

I'm using match quality for a measuring stick, so my pick is CM Punk. The Raw match with Cena, The Undertaker match at Wrestlemania, his return match with Jericho, and the match with Lesnar are enough to get my support for CM Punk.

Although, I agree with the majority. It's the go home show for TLC, so they'll probably choose Cena or Orton to push the title unification match at TLC.

Extreme Moment Of The Year

Cena giving Ryback an AA through the roof the ambulance.

Insult Of The Year

AJ's (truthful) pipebomb on the Total Divas.

Double Cross Of The Year

Heyman turning on Punk at MITB, Henry suckering all of us and Cena with his "retirement" speech, or Big. E dropping Kaitlyn in the middle of the ring after the whole secret admirer ploy.

This is Awesome! Moment of the Year

I wouldn't have a problem with Cesaro winning for swinging Khali.

"Total Diva" of the Year

I don't care.

LOL! Moment of the Year

Brock Lesnar telling Paul Heyman to "Say something stupid" during that one backstage promo during the build to Summerslam.

Match of the Year

I have a strong feeling it'll be Cena VS Rock II. Although, I think it would be a bad move on WWE's part. With the way things are now, Rock's image in the eyes of WWE fans isn't the same anymore. Mentions of Rock on Raw post Wrestlemania 29 have received some noticeable boos from live crowds, so a "Well, The Rock couldn't be here to accept his award tonight..." announcement wouldn't help solve the problem.

Also, Rock VS Cena II wasn't the best match of the year. Hell, it wasn't the best match at Wrestlemania 29. It's a tough choice between Bryan VS Cena at Summerslam and Punk VS Lesnar for me, but I would go with Lesnar VS Punk. A brutal and hard fought match, with Punk refusing to give up, but his obsession with vengeance cost him in the end.

In the last few minutes, some of the presenters for the awards for Monday have been named:

The Shield will present the Slammy for Double-Cross of the Year.
Christian will present the Slammy This is Awesome! Moment of the Year.
Bret Hart will present the Slammy for Match of the Year.
Eve Torres will present the Slammy for Total Diva of the Year.
Shawn Michaels will present the Slammy for Superstar of the Year.

Judging simply by the presenters named, thus far, one wouldn't think that there'll be a ton of lackluster comedy involved during the award segments. Shawn Michaels being back makes me wonder if they're going to have some interaction between him and Daniel Bryan. Given how he screwed over Bryan at HIAC, all the more heinous as he's one of Bryan's mentors, I'd be surprised if he's not nominated for Double-Cross of the Year.

Are all the nominations available for each category? Or is it a free vote? If available, I would like for someone to inform me (even WZ on their home page as a news)

I don't have the WWE app and I won't download it, so please, help me out here...

They have added a few more awards.

- Trending Now (Hashtag) of the Year
- Beard of the Year
- Fan Participation of the Year
- Breakout Star of the Year

I have no idea about "Trending Now". I can't think of any decent hashtags this year. When The Rock was back he actively promoted twitter and no-one really does that. Beard of the Year will go to Bryan although the Wyatt Family should share it.

I'm not really sure about fan participation of the year. I guess Fandangoing is a shout. Breakout star of the year is probably Big E even though he did debut right at the end of 2012.

There've been four new categories added to this year's Slammy Awards. As of right now, the field reads like this:

Superstar of the Year
Extreme Moment of the Year
Insult of the Year
Double-Cross of the Year
This is Awesome! Moment of the Year
"Total Diva" of the Year
LOL! Moment of the Year
Match of the Year
Trending Now (Hashtag) of the Year
Beard of the Year
Fan Participation of the Year
Breakout Star of the Year

I should've known that WWE would simply HAVE to have some award revolving around Twitter.

Beard of the Year is easily the goofiest of the categories thus far, though it actually has some degree of merit. Well... as much merit as any of the other Slammies. :p Quite a few roster members are sporting beards like Daniel Bryan, Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper, Erick Rowan, Mark Henry, Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, Sheamus and Wade Barrett. Of course, the whole purpose of it is some corny joke but I bet the place will erupt if Bryan wins it.

I'm not really sure what Fan Participation of the Year is, though I'm guessing it has something to do with how hot the crowd is. If so, then the audience at the post WrestleMania 29 Raw will almost certainly take it.

I dunno if Breakout Star of the Year is the same thing as Rookie of the Year or not. If it is, then it should go to The Shield. If it's about someone that's been on the roster for a bit but has had a really big year in which he's stepped up his game, then it should be Daniel Bryan.

I think the Slammy Awards could be a big night for Daniel Bryan. The Slammy Awards episode of Raw takes place in Seattle, Washington and Bryan's hometown of Aberdeen is only about 105-110 miles away.

Superstar of the Year: Daniel Bryan

Match of the Year: Daniel Bryan vs John Cena at Summerslam

Diva of the Year: AJ Lee

Insult of the Year: Punk calls Authority douches (obviously will not win)

Double Cross of the Year: Heyman screws Punk at Money in the Bank

LOL Moment of the Year: Sin Cara stops match for dislocated finger (obviously will not win)

This is Awesome Moment of the Year: Bryan wins WWE Championship at Summerslam

Extreme Moment of the Year: Punk beats Heyman with a kendo stick

Trending Now (Hashtag) of the Year: #HBShizzle

Beard of the Year: Daniel Bryan

Fan Participation of the Year: I don't know

Breakout Star of the Year: Roman Reigns

I will not be surprised if Cena gets Superstar of the Year and the same for if a member of the Total Divas show wins Diva of the Year.

The nominees in some of the categories have been released over the course of the day.

Superstar of the Year
John Cena
Randy Orton
CM Punk
Daniel Bryan
Big Show
Brock Lesnar

Total Diva of the Year
AJ Lee
The Funkadactyls
Natalya
Kaitlyn
Eva Marie
The Bella Twins

Double-Cross of the Year
Triple H and Daniel Bryan at SummerSlam
Shawn Michaels and Daniel Bryan at Hell in a Cell
Mark Henry and John Cena retirement angle on Raw
Paul Heyman screwing CM Punk at Money in the Bank.

Superstar of the Year is pretty wide open. I could see WWE "handing" the award to Randy Orton but I don't see that going down. As the winners are supposed to be determined by vote, I don't see a heel winning this; especially not a heel as unsympathetic as Orton has been. Without it actually looking rigged, Cena, Bryan & Punk are the only realistic choices I think.

The Total Diva of the Year Slammy, realistically, should go to AJ Lee. A good 95% of the resurgence in relevance the Divas have seen over the second half of this year is due to AJ. If Eva Marie winds up getting this, I'll put my foot though the friggin' television.

Double-Cross of the Year is pretty broad, in my opinion. I'm ashamed to say that I forgot about Henry's amazing performance in the retirement angle on Raw. He had EVERYBODY fooled in what might honestly be among the greatest acting performances any wrestler has ever given. I honestly won't complain if this wins it, but it's probably more realistic if Trips & HBK screwing Bryan over wins it as they've both been an ongoing topic of discussion over the past 3.5 months.

The nominees in some of the categories have been released over the course of the day.

Superstar of the Year
John Cena
Randy Orton
CM Punk
Daniel Bryan
Big Show
Brock Lesnar

I think it's a pretty big deal that The Rock isn't nominated. I guess the rumors are true. They're done with him.

DB could win all of the awards except Total Diva of the Year.....he could literally win all of them, its in his hometown afterall. And if we get deprived of an HBK/DB interaction, then it'll be sad.

Here's the full list for tonight! My predictions are in bold. It seems like they're not calling it "Total" Diva of the Year anymore... I'm hoping that means AJ has it in the bag.

Superstar of the Year (presenter: Shawn Michaels)
• Big Show
• Brock Lesnar
• CM Punk
• Daniel Bryan
• John Cena
• Randy Orton

Analysis: I would have had Alberto Del Rio win this, but seeing as he isn't nominated, I'm going to have to go with Cena too. Two title wins, beat The Rock, great matches with Punk and Bryan, new reality show that's all about him, etc.

Diva of the Year (presenter: Eve)
• AJ Lee
• The Bella Twins
• Eva Marie
• The Funkadactyls
• Kaitlyn
• Natalya

Analysis: I would obviously go with AJ too, but it wouldn't shock me too much for them to have The Bellas or Natalya win it and have AJ go berserk on them. I think AJ has it in the bag though.

Double-Cross of the Year (presenters: The Shield)
• Mark Henry's "retirement speech" on Raw
• Paul Heyman costs CM Punk the Money in the Bank Contract at Money in the Bank
• Shawn Michaels Superkicks Daniel Bryan at Hell in a Cell
• Triple H costs Daniel Bryan the WWE Championship at SummerSlam

Analysis: All of them were predictable as hell, but I'd give the slight edge to Mark Henry because it was the best segment of them all. I think Triple H is winning this though. He'll do some silly Best for Business speech.

Match of the Year (presenter: Bret Hart)
• Cody Rhodes & Goldust (w/Dusty Rhodes) vs. Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns (w/Dean Ambrose) with the Rhodes Brothers' jobs on the line at Battleground
• The Rock vs. John Cena for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 29
• Triple H vs. Brock Lesnar in a Steel Cage Match at Extreme Rules
• The Undertaker vs. CM Punk at WrestleMania 29

Analysis: Cena/Punk should have been nominated, but my pick of this liter is Undertaker/Punk. But ugh, Rock/Cena is probably winning, which will just show how full of shít this whole award show is.

Insult of the Year (presenter: The Miz)
• AJ Lee disses the "Total Divas" cast on Raw
• Stephanie McMahon degrades Big Show on Raw
• Paul Heyman disowns CM Punk
• Zeb Colter offends the Universe

Analysis: AJ's promo was great. I can't see anyone else winning.

"LOL!" Moment of the Year (presenters: The New Age Outlaws)
• The Great Khali and Jinder Mahal try to charm Santino's cobra on SmackDown
• The Rock Concert at Raw 20th Anniversary
• Titus O'Neil throws up on JBL, Michael Cole and Zeb Colter on SmackDown
• Vickie Guerrero is fired as GM of Raw

Analysis: Rock isn't here to accept the award, so I'm guessing Titus wins it. I think all four are lame, but Santino gets the slight edge for me. I chuckled a bit when I saw it. I don't get what was funny about Vickie's firing though.

Extreme Moment of the Year (presenter: Mick Foley)
• CM Punk exacts vengeance on Paul Heyman at Hell in a Cell
• Ryback spears John Cena through the LED light board at Extreme Rules
• The Shield Triple Powerbombs The Undertaker on SmackDown
• The Wyatts crush Kane at SummerSlam

Analysis: I think Ryback is winning to get some heat back on him. I have no problem with that, well deserved.

Fan Participation of the Year (presenters: The Prime Time Players)
• Fandango-ing
• Yes! Yes! Yes!
• Let's go Cena/Cena sucks!
• What's Up?

Analysis: R-Truth's nomination is hilarious. Fandango needs to win all the way. I think Bryan will be winning the Beard award so he won't leave empty-handed. Still, they might want him to win a 2nd one so he could take this.

APP EXCLUSIVES
Trending Now (Hashtag of the Year) (presenters: Cody Rhodes & Goldust)
• #BelieveInTheShield (The Shield)
• #FollowTheBuzzards (The Wyatt Family)
• #BestForBusiness (The Authority)
• #WeThePeople (The Real Americans)

Analysis: Zeb should win. I'm gonna love it when Cody and Goldust have to give an award to their rivals. Let's hope for some good TV.

Beard of the Year (presenter: Santino Marella)
• Damien Sandow
• Daniel Bryan
• The Wyatt Family
• Zeb Colter

Analysis: Zeb should win.

"THIS IS AWESOME!" Moment of the Year (presenter: Christian)
• Big Show knocks out Triple H
• Daniel Bryan wins the WWE Championship from Randy Orton at Night of Champions
• Dolph Ziggler cashes in his Money in the Bank contract
• Kofi Kingston hops on a chair to stave off elimination in the Royal Rumble Match

Analysis: Dolph's cash in was the mark out moment of the YEAR. Daniel might win this, but only if people's memories betray them and they forget about how awesome Dolph's win was.

Breakout Star of the Year (presenter: John Laurinaitis)
• Big E Langston
• Fandango (w/Summer Rae)
• The Shield
• The Wyatt Family
Analysis: I'd go with Big E personally. Shield were my breakout stars LAST YEAR. This year, it's between Big E and Bray, and Bray has hardly wrestled, so Big E for the win.

WWE.COM EXCLUSIVES

"What a Maneuver!" Award
• Black Widow (AJ Lee)
• Cesaro Swing (Antonio Cesaro)
• Running knee strike (Daniel Bryan)
• Spear (Roman Reigns)

Analysis: Cesaro's got to win this, but I think Bryan will edge him out.

Faction of the Year
• 3MB
• The Real Americans
• The Shield
• The Wyatt Family

Analysis: I'd love it if 3MB won, but Shield is obviously getting the win.

"You Still Got It!" (Best Superstar Return)
• Chris Jericho
• Goldust
• The Bella Twins
• Bruno Sammartino
• Rob Van Dam

Analysis: Goldust is the only one of the bunch nominated for match of the year. It's a no-brainer.

Couple of the Year
• Daniel Bryan & Brie Bella
• Fandango & Summer Rae
• Naomi & Jimmy Uso
• John Cena & Nikki Bella
• Triple H & Stephanie McMahon
• Tyson Kidd & Natalya

Analysis: Triple H and Stephanie should win considering they take over 2 out of Raw's 3 hours every week.

Tag Team of the Year
• Cody Rhodes & Goldust
• The Prime Time Players
• The Real Americans
• The Shield (Rollins & Reigns)
• The Usos

Analysis: Realistically, Shield should win this one too, but its a poll so I think it's clear that Cody and Goldust are winning this one.

Feat of Strength of the Year
• Antonio Cesaro swings The Great Khali
• Mark Henry pulls two trucks with his bare hands
• Ryback Shell Shocks Mark Henry
• The Shield Triple Powerbombs Big Show

Analysis: Mark Henry is taking this, but it's a shame that Cesaro's swing will lose two awards.

"Say What?!" Quote of the Year
• "Paul, say somethin' stupid." - Brock Lesnar
• "Rise above THIS!" - Damien Sandow
• "One stipulation: I'm in my boys' corner and I'll be your huckleberry all night long." - Dusty Rhodes
• The "Paulcano" eruption

Analysis: Let's make Sandow a Slammy winner!

Best Dance Moves
• Fandango
• The Funkadactyls
• The Great Khali
• "Miz-co Inferno"
• R-Truth
• Summer Rae

Analysis: I have no idea. Hardest award to predict. The Funkadactyls might win, or Miz-co or w/e. I'm hoping for Summer Rae though.

Favorite Web Show
• "30-Second Fury"
• "The JBL & Cole Show"
• "WWE Inbox"
• "WWE Top 10"

Analysis: I don't watch any of them, can't say.

Best Crowd of the Year
• Raw after WrestleMania 29 (East Rutherford, N.J.)
• Raw in England (London, Apr. 22)
• Payback (Chicago)
• SummerSlam (Los Angeles)

Analysis: No-brainer. This award was made just so this crowd could win.

Catchphrase of the Year
• "Believe in The Shield" - The Shield
• "FAAAAAHHNNNN…DAAAAHHHHNNN…GO." - Fandango
• "Follow the Buzzards" - Bray Wyatt
• "That's What I Do" - Mark Henry
• "We the People" - The Real Americans
• "YES! YES! YES!" - Daniel Bryan

Analysis: I'd give the award to Bray. That line was clever. But Bryan is the biggest face nominated. He's totally getting this one.
