Report: Changes To The Slammy Awards

Jack-Hammer

YOU WILL RESPECT MY AUTHORITAH!!!!
According to an announcement made this morning, the annual Slammy Awards will be moved from roughly the end of the year to the first quarter of the year. WWE's statement said that the special will be "an amped up version of WWE's annual awards show that moves to first quarter in the heart of the red carpet season."

The 1st quarter of this year is pretty much gone, so I think the statement means that the next Slammy Awards special won't air until sometime during WrestleMania season next year. Moving the special to be part of WrestleMania season increases the chances that the special simply won't be a throwaway show, which is usually what it feels like towards the end of the year. During the last few months of the year, the holidays are coming up, people are busy prepping for that and the Slammy Awards themselves simply don't feel like they're important. Moving them to be part of WrestleMania season MIGHT encourage WWE to actually try to make the awards come across as legit, maybe even do away with the comedic awards altogether. I wouldn't hold my breath on the latter happening, Vince loves his corny comedy too much, but one can always hope.

Slammy Award is a joke.

I rather see best matches in before Wrestlemania or something.

But clearly it's just a bad circus...

Would be wonderful if they fans vote actually counted and not what the WWE wants us to think they voted for. Put the categories up on wwe.com and give the fans one month to vote on what they want. Then give out the awards as a result of those votes.

Until they start doing that, it's a sham and not even worth the TV time it's given.

I didn't like the idea at first, as I felt the Slammy Awards were a good way to single the end of one year/the beginning of the next. But, the more I thought about it, the more I disagreed with my initial thoughts. I mean, technically WM is the end/start of a "WWE year", as I'll call it. So it would only make sense to have the awards close to the event. Maybe have it on the RAW after Fast Lane, or whatever they decide to name the PPV between the Rumble and Mania? Or drop the PPV in between and just have the Slammy RAW be the special show to fill the gap.

I strongly second your final statements, regarding the legitimacy of the awards. WM season is usually when most people are watching, whereas Xmas season is usually when the least are watching (I'm pretty sure), so they wouldn't (shouldn't) want to put up meaningless comedy awards just for the sake of it. But, like yourself & I'd assume many others, I'm quite skeptical that they'd actually do that.

All-in-all, this is probably a good idea. They shouldn't have it be during the last 3-4 weeks toward Mania, as that time should be used for building up the event and that only. I say have it be the fifth-last RAW heading into WM, to indicate that there are only four weeks left once it's over, and also to give room to build a potential quick feud out of it between two stars whom should be on the card but aren't at the given moment.

If they let the fans choose then they would just control who/what you can choose from.

I don't mind the Slammys, it's apart of the WWE Universe and been going on for a long time so I come to expect them.

I think they should link the Slammys with the Hall of Fame or with Summerslam. Back in the day the Slammys was a suit and jacket event and felt like a real awards show even though it was a work, the wrestlers took winning Slammys seriously (they still sort of do) and it made fans take it seriously.

The first thing they should do is make a solid list of award categories that will not change year by year. It seems sometimes they come out with goofy awards like "Best hair" to just give someone am award who had no shot of winning any other award. Do away with that, I like silliness but that's too silly.

If they do it like a real awards show, with celebrities and musical performances etc like the Grammys or the Emmys but more lighthearted and fun I'm all for it.

This isn't a shot at you, JH. But a big who cares is all the emotion that I can muster around this announcement. The Slammy Awards have long since been something worth caring about and I could really care less that they are looking at ways of making it more worthwhile. I mean, how many people still talk about their Slammy Award win only a couple of months ago? Pretty much no one. And whilst that's the mentality of the WWE and the superstars, what's the point of even caring about anything that goes on?

I appreciate that the WWE are trying to turn the tide but, in honesty, I don't want to see it as an amped up Raw. I would much rather it be on the WWE Network on a stand alone award show with red carpet and all that jazz. Tey and make it mean something and it might just get there. It's a start but I have very low hopes and expectations fro by his announcement. There is a stigma around the Slammy Awards that will now go away.

WWE should just make it a little more legit and add the Slammys to the HOF show, had out awards like "wrestler of the year" "team of the year" and "match of the year" and forget about all those other stupid awards like "OMG moment". Sorry but I don't need a 3hr stupid Slammy Raw show with matches and awards handed out in between.

I hate the Slammy awards, utterly pointless. It just screams "outdated and out of touch" to me, something that's a sad reminder of the dark days of the mid-1990s when WWE was struggling.

If the awards were made to look more legitimate, and fans actually got to vote for realistic catagories, rewarding wrestlers who'd performed well over the last year (Match of the Year, Best Comeback, Most Improved, Best Promo, Best Main Event, Best Finisher etc) like the 2014 Slammy's seemed to, then they are ok, but. But the fake, childish shit they were with "Baby Oil Application of the Year", "Outstanding Achievement in Muppet Resemblance" "The Pwee-Wee Herman Bow Tie of the Year" awards, they have used before need to be stopped.

Goddamn, there's bunch of people that don't understand pro-wrestling.

The Slammys are awesome, but only if they progress story-line. I don't want morons fans to vote, because moron fans are morons. The Slammys should be a complete work. HHH and The Authority should "tamper" with the results, they should intimidate the presenters to read the wrong names, certain guys should be catapulted with the results.

The worst thing that the WWE could ever do would be to actually listen to fans. Fans are stupid, emotional, and they think that THEIR armchair fantasy booking is the most awesomest ever.

Yeah true. I still don't believe Reigns won the popular vote for Superstar of the Year. The vote definitely had to be fixed.
